LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
It’s hard to believe that this year has flown by so quickly and that my
term as president is coming to an end with just two meetings remain-
ing in this board year. The meetings this past quarter were quite suc-
cessful with an above average attendance, requiring us to close regis-
tration several times due to reaching the venue’s maximum capacity.
This is directly related to the great programming that our Vice-
President Kameron Boggan pulled together for us this year.
The next few months are shaping up to be quite exciting for our
branch! We have yet another interesting speaker planned for our
June meeting at Reata for the last standard branch meeting of this
year’s board. Our annual joint meeting with the Dallas branch in July
will follow. We are hosting the joint meeting this year and are making
a few adjustments to the operations of the meeting, the biggest being
a change in venue. We are hosting the joint meeting at UTA as a way
to further engage our student chapter at a university that is co-
sponsored by both branches, while maintaining a central location that
is key to good participation from both the Fort Worth and Dallas
branches. Several sponsorship opportunities will be available for the
joint meeting so be on the lookout for these in the coming weeks.
As this year’s board calendar comes to an end it is the time of year
that we begin thinking about our branch’s future leaders. I, like so
many board members before me, would like to encourage everyone to
think about becoming more involved. With ASCE, like so many other
things in life, the more you give the more you will receive. By volun-
teering with ASCE you have a great opportunity to develop both per-
sonally and professionally while creating a great professional network
of friends and colleagues. If you are interested in becoming more in-
volved please feel free to reach out to either myself of Niraj Acharya,
and we will help find a place for you within ASCE.
Lastly, I would like to encourage all members to visit our website
(http://branches.asce.org/ft-worth/). In the resources section you can
find copies of PDH certificates for past meetings you attended.
Sincerely,
Austin Baird, P.E., M. ASCE

Dr. Wendell Nedderman passed away on May 8, 2019 at the age of 97.
His impact on the UTA campus and on higher education across our
state cannot be overstated.
He joined the then Arlington State College in 1959 as the founding
Dean of Engineering, building the College in size and reputation to be
one of the very best in the Southwest. He also simultaneously served at
various times in a number of other administrative positions, including
Vice President for Research and Graduate Affairs, and was appointed
acting President in 1972. He served as President of UTA from 1974 un-
til his retirement in 1992, overseeing the largest growth of the campus
with the addition of 24 buildings and over 60 new programs, almost
doubling our enrollment from less than 14,000 students to over
25,000. In fact, our trajectory can be best described by what he said
very early in his Presidential career, “Someday, we’re going to be so
darn big and so darn good, we can’t be ignored.”
He was dedicated to student success and to providing opportunities to
all who desired to gain from the promise of higher education. He was a
pioneer in ensuring accessibility on campus and, with the legendary
Jim Hayes, set the bar for ensuring access for disabled students, with
UTA receiving the Outstanding State Agency award from then Gover-
nor Dolph Briscoe Jr. Through his personal actions and leadership, President Nedderman made a lasting impact on
the lives of thousands, providing vision, encouragement, and mentorship. His drive and enthusiasm provided the mo-
tivation for students, faculty, and staff alike to make their dreams a reality.
An inspirational leader and a visionary far ahead of his times in what he saw as the future for the then fledgling UTA,
President Nedderman’s drive and vision for the University set the stage for where we are today—a national power-
house and a leader in teaching, research, and outreach. We continue to succeed because of the path that he set and
the battles he fought for UTA. His legacy will be felt for years to come and he will always be remembered as a Giant
among University leaders.

Program
On February 8th and 9th, Dr. Williams and five ASCE students at-
tended the ASCE Multi-Region Leadership Conference (MRLC). This
conference was an eye opening experience for the students, especially
those who held officer positions in the UTA ASCE student chapter.
This conference allowed students to meet with professionals from
other states, as well as students from various ASCE chapters from dif-
ferent cities and states. Students were given the chance to share lead-
ership skills as well as any challenges faced within their chapters. At-
tendees were then encouraged to exchange tips and tactics amongst
one another that will allow them to strengthen their chapters.
The first concrete canoe UTA ASCE poured broke and was unusable
just one week prior to the student symposium. A second canoe was
then poured and broke beyond repair during transport. A third canoe
was poured in just three days. The team captains were up late every
night preparing the new canoe along with seven other students devot-
ing all their time to this final pour. Even a few grad students volun-
teered to help.
Several lessons were learned during this process, specifically about
how to make the canoe less susceptible to cracks during pouring. The
team successfully produced a third canoe to take to competition.
At the student symposium in South Padre, UTA’s concrete canoe team
earned 3rd place in both the men’s and co-ed sprint races, as well as
2nd place in concrete frisbee and 3rd place in concrete bowling. The
team also got an honorable mention for the Spirit of the Competition
award.

The Tarleton State ASCE student chapter competed for the first time
this year in the concrete bowling and concrete frisbee competitions at
the student symposium in South Padre, TX.
Tarleton’s team created concrete discs that were aesthetically pleasing
and flew well while remaining in tact upon landing. Each disc was ap-
proximately 10 inches in diameter and made using a polystyrene aggre-
gate. The discs were then sanded and painted for appearance. During
competition the team threw the frisbees 105 feet to clinch first place!
Two civil engineering students, Hannah Fowler and Trevor Pack, re-
ceived scholarships from the ASCE Fort Worth chapter. The Tarleton
State Practitioner Advisors, Brandon Oliver and Allison Stamper, pre-
sented the students with their scholarships.
Tarleton’s civil engineering bachelor’s degree program is now ABET ac-
credited. ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to
produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that lead the
way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipate the welfare
and safety needs of the public.
Beginning in the fall of 2019, the civil engineering program will begin
offering classes in the new $54 million engineering building.
