{Hopeful Expansions} Our theatre and music programs continue to excel. The Auburn bands not only excite football fans and spur the team to victory; they also perform all over the world. Now in the process of building a state-of-the-art band complex, the Auburn Band Program needs support more than ever. [band.auburn.edu] Audiences continue to pack the Telfair Peet Theatre in record numbers and cherished friends of the Auburn University Theatre have made it possible for students to excel in ways never before possible. With generous donations, plans to enhance the existing space will make the Auburn University Theatre a performing arts destination.

The Department of Music’s Dr. Howard Goldstein was awarded a 2010 special citation for Excellence in Music Education from The American Prize. Goldstein is one of six conductors nationwide to receive the honor this year, demonstrating the important role of the conductor in music education.

The Department of Art created ART IN ROME, a study abroad program that 16 students will participate in this summer.

12Theatre majors who participated in Alabama state screening auditions last October were passed on to the final round of auditions for the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Atlanta in March 2011. Last year’s theatre graduates garnered industry employment at professional theaters in Birmingham, Atlanta, New York, Baltimore, Nashville, Austin, and at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

Liberal Arts continues to send approximately 250 students a year to study abroad in various programs; 29 of those students were awarded

liberal arts funded academic enriched scholarships to help support their endeavors.

The DeparTmenT of foreign Languages anD LiTeraTures hosts the Study Abroad Program in Salamanca, Spain, each summer. One of the longest and largest study abroad programs on campus, it offers students the opportunity to take classes at one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe: the Universidad de Salamanca. For the first time this year, students can stay with a Spanish family for the duration of the program.

{After Auburn} Our philosophy students are furthering their education after graduation in master’s and doctoral programs at institutions such as University of Chicago, University of Massachusetts and Texas Tech University.

“I’m eager to bring this experience to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies position, and I hope that I can work with faculty, advisors and support staff, and students to improve the quality of the undergraduate educational experience.” Constance C. Relihan is the new Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies, effective June 1. Relihan is now the second associate dean to move up to the Provost’s office from the College of Liberal Arts.

Summer on the HillSarah Hill, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, has been accepted into The Washington Center’s Summer 2011 Sophomore Exploration Program.

{New Frontiers} At a time when the University is tightening its budget, the Department of Economics was able to hire three promising new assistant professors in the subjects of Environmental Economics, Labor Economics and Applied Econometrics, and Pharmaceutical and Health Economics.

Philosophy major Roy Walker Glasgow and Communication Disorders major Rachel Leanne Coffey both won the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. The Award is given annually to one male and one female student in recognition of qualities which "ennoble and beautify living."

Sociology major Talor McMillan Drinkard received the President's Award, which is designed to recognize the outstanding graduate in each college/school on campus.

{In the Courtroom} The Mock Trial Competition Team competed in the American Mock Trial Association's Regional Competition in Jackson, Miss., in February 2011. They won the "Spirit of AMTA Award" that is awarded to the team that best exemplifies ideals of honesty, civility and fair play.

$2.7 millionLiberal Arts Faculty submitted 71 external research grants, 32 of which were awarded, for a total of $2.7 million. Our faculty won top university honors in 2010 for creative research and scholarship, excellence in teaching, distinguished research and alumni professorships.

The Speech and hearing aSSociaTion of alabama (SHAA) honored three Auburn University graduate students in the Department of Communication Disorders at its annual convention held in Birmingham in March.

Meghan Brown, first year graduate student, was recognized as the Outstanding Student in the CMDS Department. Sarah Beam, second year Doctor of Audiology graduate student, received the first SHAA Memorial Scholarship in Audiology. Emmie Fulgham, first year graduate student, received the first SHAA Memorial Scholarship in Speech-Language Pathology.

Communication Disorders

15,000Psychology Students in the Applied Behavior Analysis Master’s program provide over 15,000 hours annually in outreach and clinical service to six area service programs for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities.

Dr. Chris Locke, assistant professor, Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work in the College of Liberal Arts, was named among the top 20 most influential social work professors in the country by Masters of Social Work blog. >mastersofsocialwork.org<

The Department of English and the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities hosted the first Auburn Writers Conference last fall. Given the success of the event, the second annual conference is already in the planning stages and will be held on October 7 - 8, 2011. This year’s theme will be “Myth, Memory, and the Haunted Muse” and will consist of small-group workshops, panel discussions and an impressive list of attending authors.

Auburn University will host a Journalism Advisers Workshop on June 9-11, 2011. The first of its kind in the state of Alabama, the three-day workshop will teach elementary, middle and high school teachers the basics of running a school newspaper, covering everything from sports-writing to photography.

{Inspiring} Activist Lilly Ledbetter delivered the Women’s Leadership Institute’s Extraordinary Women Lecture in October. Her historic leadership experience resulted in the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

Journalism Enriches Valley’s Vision

Summer Advisers Workshop

The AlAbAmA bureAu of Tourism And TrAvel recenTly AwArded the City of Valley its annual award for Best Theme Campaign for the city’s first Cotton Mill Reunion, a unique event coordinated as part of

the Bureau’s “Year of Small Towns” emphasis. Public relations students assisted with the creation of campaign materials and journalism students produced a 32-page publication, titled “Valley Vision.”

mary heLen Brown, 2010-2011 Breeden Eminent Scholar, worked with the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities to create a two-day public symposium on the history of the press in Alabama. Tony Barnhart, Rick Bragg and Rheta Grimsley Johnson headlined a roster of presenters who talked about how the press has recorded, reported and shaped Alabama politics, culture and opinion.

The College of Liberal Arts celebrated their first National Arts and Humanities month by hosting a number of special events, lectures and programs throughout the month highlighting the importance of the arts and humanities in everyone’s life.

The College of Liberal Arts hosted the f irst “BLUE on Tour” initiative. Organizers of BLUE, a global oceans film and conservation summit, selected Auburn because they felt their films could create awareness and impact the local community. The Tour showcased a number of conservation films such as Confessions of an Eco-Terrorist, talks with the filmmakers, and a special lecture by Fabien Cousteau.

Scholarship to study at Oxford University in 2011. She is a senior in Anthropology with a minor in Sustainability Studies. Erica also received the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award, the highest honor a student-athlete can receive in the Southeastern Conference. This is the first time ever that any SEC institution has had both a female and male winner the same year.

The College of Liberal Arts’ Community and Civic Engagement Initiative hosted Auburn’s first No Impact Week, a one-week carbon cleanse. The week consisted of events and themes that challenged individuals to make as little impact on nature’s resources as possible.
