Former A’s make trip toall star game memorable

Pat Eberly was treated toan outing at the majorleague All Star Game inKansas City July 10 by for-mer A’s catcher DarrelMiller. Miller had calledMrs. E the day before thegame to see if she wouldbe interested in tickets forthe event as he had re-ceived news that his sonDarrell, Jr. had been se-lected to play in the Cali-fornia High School AllStar game and they wouldbe going back before theKansas City game.

ter Jill and Scott Sunder-man, they were able to goearly enough to have lunchand a long visit with Dar-rell, his wife Kelly and twoyoungest children prior tothe Miller’s departure forthe airport. Darrell, Jr.,also a catcher, will be at-tending USC this fall andis hoping to come back toClarinda next summer tofollow in his father’s foot-steps with the A’s. The se-nior Miller said he wantedhis son to have the same“Iowa experience” he did,as he felt it was a time that

helped him mature both asa player and a man. JaredSunderman joined his par-ents and grandmother forthe pregame festivities thatincluded a BBQ and con-cert by country singerLuke Bryan, as well as thegame.

Miller played majorleague ball with the Cali-fornia Angels from 1984-1988 and is currently thedirector of the majorleague baseball UrbanYouth Academies that arebeing developed through-out the country.

Clarinda hometo work byprominent artist

When Ozzie Smith presented thebust of the late Merl Eberly to thecommunity last January he made agift that was not only a tribute to hisformer coach and friend, but also awork of art by an acclaimed artist.

Harry Weber, the sculptor of thepiece is internationally known andrespected for his collection of work.His sports figures are prominent fea-tures at 12 different professional andamateur stadiums including BuschStadium in St. Louis and KauffmanStadium in Kansas City, as well as amajor display at the Missouri SportsHall of Fame. He was named the Na-tional Sports Artist of the Year by theUnited States Sports Academy in2011.

Covering a wide range of subjectsWeber’s work is on display in theBaseball Hall of Fame in Cooper-stown, N.Y., the Museum of FineArts in Newport, R.I., as well as theNational Dog Museum to name just afew. Two of his sculptural groupshave been designated National Lewisand Clark sites by the Federal ParksDepartment.

Parent’s week always special

Each summer the A’s schedule their annual Parent’s Week during theFourth of July week and this year was very special. The turnout was great andmany of the visiting parents spent an extended period of time in Clarinda get-ting to know our community.

On the Fourth, a picnic was held at the Clarinda Lutheran School for theplayers, their parents, host parents, A’s board and Auxiliary members. This isalways a good time for the program to thank the parents for sharing their sonsfor the summer and for them to get acquainted with their sons’ host family.

Fireworks display popular again this year

Thanks go to the Clarinda Academy for hosting a free nightat the ball field July 3 for the 4th of July fireworks following theA’s game.

As in the past there was an overflow crowd to watch theshow and more people had come early to take in the ball gamealso.

A big thank you goes to Clarinda Fire Chief Roger Williamsand his staff for their help in putting on the display and to allwho donated toward the cost of the fireworks that night.

Work continues on bookOver the Fourth of July week Mike Tackett was back

in town to continue doing research and interviews forthe upcoming book he is working on with the Eberlyfamily. Tackett is the managing editor and WashingtonBureau Chief for Bloomberg News and his wife Julie,who accompanied and helped with interviews on thistrip, works in television in the DC area.

Mike says that each trip he has made since January,plus the phone interviews he has done in the past sixmonths, are so valuable in laying the ground work ofthe story of how three entities – Eberly – the A’s pro-gram – the community of Clarinda - came together tomake such a great narrative. At this time the workingtitle is “Summer Ball: A Man – A Team – A Town.They have been impressed with our community sincetheir visit during the 2010 season when their son Leewas a pitcher with the A’s.

“There are so many layers to this story and it is fas-cinating to uncover them and see how so many thingscame together through the years,” Tackett said. “Ican’t begin to express my appreciation to all those whohave taken the time to visit with us and to share theirconnection to the overall picture.”

Season wrap-up to comeWhen we went to press the A’s regular season was over and they were starting the NBC Central USA Regional Tournament. As you read this they will have

finished their season or are heading to the NBC World Series in Wichita.In the August edition of the Dugout News there will be a final wrap for the season with the team’s record, the leaders both offensively and on the mound and

thoughts from A’s board president Gary Ulmer and manager Ryan Eberly.A’s board of directors, auxiliary and management thank everyone who has helped in any way this season and for the fans who supported them this summer.
