Choosing the right stuff
• What is wrong with this picture??
• The right choice makes all the difference
• Sometimes the choice can be very difficult
![Page 3: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
How do I know?
• Learn about what clothes work in certain weather and which ones do not
• There is no right or wrong
• Personal comfort is different for everyone
![Page 4: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Heat loss and your body
• We loose heat in 4 different ways:• Convection (wind)
• Evaporation (sweat)
• Conduction (contact)
• Radiation (skin)
![Page 5: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Prevention of heat loss• Severe heat loss can lead
to hypothermia
• Clothing choices can affect heat loss dramatically
• How we use those clothes can have an affect as well
![Page 6: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The Layering System
Some questions we will answer:
• What is a layering system?
• What should it do?
• Why should we use it?
• What are examples of different layers?
![Page 7: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
What is the layering system?
• Using different materiel to protect our body
• Easily changed to adapt in various situations
• Ideally made up of quick drying, breathable parts
![Page 8: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
What should the layering system do?
• Keep the wind and water out
• Keep the heat near our body
• Dry quickly
![Page 9: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Why use the layering system?
• Very versatile in all conditions• Keeps you warm and dry• Keeps you safe and happy
![Page 10: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
What are examples of different layers?
• The Base Layer• Known commonly as
“Long John’s”
• Moves water away from the skin
• Hydrophobic
• Thin and light for quick drying when wet
• Made of Polyester
![Page 11: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The layers continued…
• The Mid-Layer• Known as a “Fleece” coat
• Much thicker than the base layer
• Tight fitting to avoid heat loss through convection
• Creates a layer of warm air around your body
• Made of Polyester
![Page 12: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The layers continued…
• The outer layer or “Shell”• Wind proof or Water Proof
• Thin protective shell
• Usually has a hood
• Ideally breathable
• Made of Polyester
![Page 13: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Other layers…
• For extreme conditions a very warm layer might be needed• A down “puffy” jacket or
very thick fleece sweater will work fine
• For cool but dry conditions a light shell will do the trick
![Page 14: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Check your Head• 2 of the Beastie Boys have
got it right• Why?• The head is very exposed
and a lot of body heat can be lost from there
• The back of the neck is another area to cover in extreme temperatures
![Page 15: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Hands and feet
• These are the extremities
• Feel the cold here first• Why?
• How should we protect them?
![Page 16: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Hands
• Mittens are warmer than gloves• Why?
• They make doing things impossible however
• Gloves have fingers and make things easier to use
![Page 17: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Feet• Feet need to stay DRY or they get
COLD
• Waterproof boots help but our feet tend to sweat a lot inside of them
• Changing your socks is very important to keeping feet warm
• Feet loose most of their heat through…• Conduction!!!!!
![Page 18: Clothing Presentation](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070319/55836141d8b42a9c2b8b4596/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
What you need…• For this course you are going to need:
• A raincoat• A pair of warm shoes or boots• A tuque• A winter coat (ski or snowboard coat is fine)• Some snow pants• Gloves or mittens• Winter boots• “Long Johns” or base layer• A scarf• A backpack• Extra Sox• A “Fleece coat” or sweater
