5G: How Ericsson Uses 5G To Usher In A New Generation Of Connected Robots To Automate Entire Assembly Lines (Sponsored Session)

• Using Wearables To Improve Execution Between Robots And Humans

• Visual Inspection Cobots• Robotic Exoskeletons

Nokia’s “factory of the future” in Oulu, Finland offers a glimpse into a world in which high-speed connectivity promises to transform manufacturing. The Oulu campus, where the company is manufacturing its 5G base stations, is the heart of Nokia’s 5G radio design and innovation efforts, allowing the company to test and build equipment in tandem with researchers. Industrial robots are doing final assembly of some products. By standardizing such things as screw sizes, Nokia has been able to turn more and more of the work over to robots. Nokia is also starting to introduce cobots which have a high degree of sensitivity and are safe to use alongside humans. An advantage of cobots is that they can be more easily reprogrammed to handle repetitive tasks. Automation has enabled new levels of sophistication, increasing the number of components on a motherboard dramatically, and allow quality inspection in soldering work with optical system, something that would be nearly impossible to do with the human eye.

Fujitsu is changing the way computer mainboards are manufactured and tested, with a pioneering collaboration where robots assist humans, working side-by-side on electronics assembly lines. The safety-first deployment is part of a co-creation project at the Fujitsu Digital Smart Factory in Augsburg, Germany, one of the world’s most modern IT production facilities. In this ground-breaking mainstream electronics implementation, human-robot collaboration includes the handling of delicate computer components: a task that was previously considered beyond the range of robotic automation. To make the approach more quickly available to other manufacturing companies, Fujitsu and its partners have developed an Industry 4.0 robot-based process automation solution to provide high-precision mainboard handling and testing.

With 5G a growing reality and Industry 4.0 underway, Ericsson is taking a big step toward smarter wireless manufacturing and automation at its own 5G factory. An intelligent automation system is deployed for the production of Ericsson Radio System, including a fully automated flexible robot cell solution for final assembly. Ericsson plans to subsequently combine this system with its own connectivity layer - adding machine learning and artificial intelligence to its production, enabling real-time data analytics and an end-to-end predictive automated manufacturing chain.

Robots and automation are helping all kinds of businesses to keep up with the demands of consumers, from the smallest manufacturer to the largest multinationals. Unilever and other giants of the consumer goods industry have started to reinvent themselves, with robots and automation at the core of their new business strategies. Unilever has tapped on the power of intelligent robotic technologies in its manufacturing transformation:• Boosting Product Variety - handling multiple product

sizes• Combining Different Product Lines with robotic

palletizers• Expanding production capacity and mass customization

with cobots

Opportunities And Challenges In Developing And Deploying Truly Collaborative Systems

VIP Packaging, a leading plastic and steel packaging company in Australia and New Zealand, has tapped automation to minimise manual handling and gain production efficiencies. The company implemented a fully automated system - including three robots, a pallet dispenser, a twin shuttle, a three-vision system, a fully automated HMI, an automated pallet strapping system and a pallet stretching machine - which were all controlled by one central motor control centre. They were able to integrate vision systems that could identify a number of bottle faults and reject those bottles. This automated quality control system was more consistent than the human element, which allowed lowering the cost of each pallet through the associated labour savings and reduced packaging waste. The system was also programmed to monitor and sound an alarm to alert the operator if too many bottles were rejected consecutively.

RangerBot AUV is a novel completely vision-based robotic tool that has been developed to provide coral reef managers, researchers and community groups extra ‘hands and eyes’ in the water to help monitor and manage various threats on the Great Barrier Reef. This includes monitoring reef health indicators like coral bleaching and water quality, mapping and inspection, and pests like the Crown-Of-Thorns Starfish (COT). Advances in robotic vision and artificial intelligence meant the COTSbot could recognize COTS 99.4 percent of the time. This project is in collaboration with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation with support from the Google Impact Challenge.

New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) invested in the development of autonomous robots for removing rust and old paint on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Once placed within a steel structure, a user can simply activate the robot which then automatically senses and explores an unknown 3D environment, builds a 3D map, plans collision-free motion, and performs blasting operations. The major benefit of the robots is the drastic reduction of worker exposure to hazardous grit-blasting environments, compared to the existing manual blasting process.

Employing in-pipe robotic tools allowed Sydney Water to perform cost-effective advanced condition assessments. It enables Sydney Water to intelligently identify actual ‘end-of-life’ replacements. The cost of asset renewal programs has been reduced from approximately $AU50 million per year to $AU30 million. Sydney Water invested as part of a consortium-run project worth $AU12 million. The project involved 10 major Australian water utilities.

Case Study: How Meat & Livestock Australia Uses Robots Across The Entire Value Chain

Closing Remarks by Conference Chairman

Robotic-as-a-ServiceRise Of Robotics-as-a-Service: How RaaS Will Lower Investment Costs And Drive Massive Adoption In Robotics Technology

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) is currently driving an extensive $AU60 million program of advanced 2D and 3D imaging technologies, encompassing the full ‘paddock to plate’ red meat value chain. MLA has key strategic partnerships with leading domestic and global technology provider organisations, for example: hyperspectral imaging (US), dual energy xray (NZ), airline baggage CT (US), including both 2D and 3D modalities.

Wartsila’s Central Distribution Center in Kampen, the Netherlands, serves as a hub for the entire logistics chain of spare parts supporting energy and marine solutions. In partnership with DHL, the company chose to deploy Robotics-as-a-Service to implement a Virtual Conveyor material transport solution and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to simplify point-to-point material handling. With the Cloud Robotics Platform, the systems were deployed in just a few days. Since each AMR is equipped with sensors, they were able to intelligently navigate through normal warehouse operations, slowing down around people and finding their own safe paths through the warehouse. In addition to reducing the physical stress on workers, robotic AMRs were able to take over the repetitive task of transporting goods.
