Depression and Anxiety: the symptomsPeople differ in their experience of depression and anxiety. Often the symptoms occur with thoughts or images of being out of control or in danger, feeling overwhelmed, embarrassed or unable to cope.

Feeling depressedSomeonewhoisdepressedmayfeelsad,‘flat’orlonely.Somepeopledescribeitasfeeling‘down’or‘blue’.Theymaybeirritableorhavefeelingsofguiltandmayhavedifficultyconcentratingormakingdecisions.Oftenwhenapersonisdepressed,theywillhaveanegativeviewofthemselvesandseetheirfutureasbleakorhopeless.Theymaywithdrawfromfriends,haveproblemssleepingandloseinterestinactivitiesandthingstheyusuallyenjoy.

Feeling anxiousAnxious,stressed,nervous,woundupandpanickyaresomeofthewordsusedtodescribefeelingsofanxiety.Whensomepeopleareanxious,theymaygetheadaches,apoundingheart,tensemuscles,breathlessnessand/orotherphysicalsymptoms.

How much will it cost me?

BeatingtheBlues®onlineaccessisofferedfreeofchargeforadults(18+)livinginNewZealand.

What if I have limited computer skills?

BeatingtheBlues®hasbeendesignedtobeeasytouse.Onlybasiccomputerskillsareneeded.

What equipment do I need?

Youneedavalidemailaddress,computerandfast(broadband)internetaccess,aprinterandspeakers/headphones.

What if I don’t have internet access at home?

YourGP’ssurgerywillbeabletoadviseyouofotherplacesyoucanaccesstheinterneteg,yourlocallibrary.

Is the programme confidential?

TheprogrammeisconfidentialtoeveryonebutyourGPandyourclinicalteam.

What about other people looking at my account?

AccesstoyourBeatingtheBlues®accountcanonlybegainedbyusingyourpasswordandonlyyouwillhavethisinformation.Youshouldkeepyourpasswordtoyourself.

How effective will the programme be?

Resultscanbequickandtheprogrammecanbeextremelyeffectiveifpeopleworkthroughtheweeklyonlinesessionsandcarryouttheassignedtasksbeforethenextweeklysession.

How quickly can I complete the programme?

Itisrecommendedthatyouleaveatleastaweekbetweensessions.Thiswillgiveyoutimetopractisetheskillsyouhavelearntandtoactionthegoalsyouhaveset.

If I am currently taking medication for depression or anxiety can I still use Beating the Blues®?
