Central High School Auditorium and Swimming Pool Project - April 30, 2013

This natatorium was constructed to upgrade the school corporation’s aging pool. It is used for PE classes, lap swimming, recreation swimming, exercise classes and championship style swim meets.

This facility also plays host to IHSAA boys and girls sectional, MIC Conference Championships, and

numerous USS swim meets throughout the year.

“We asked you to give us something Warren Township could be proud of, that is functional, and that is within our budget and our best hopes were exceeded”

Mr. Frank Hancock, Former Vice President Warren Township Board

This project was the keystone of the program that Warren Township implemented to address the rapid growth of its student population. The addition included four new ninth grade “houses”, each with classrooms, science labs, a computer lab, project room and common area. A major component of the project was a new natatorium and field house.

Central High School Auditorium and Swimming Pool Project - April 30, 2013

This natatorium is one of the finest high school natatoriums in Indiana and was constructed as part of the new high school. Along with being a first class facility, it plays host to IHSAA boys and girls sectional, NLC Conference Championships, numerous USS swim meets and serves as the key training venue to NASA swim club. “Spear Corporation design paid attention to the smallest of details and has hit a home run with swimmers, coaches, officials and parents.” Joe Keller, Aquatics Director/ Swim Coach.

The existing natatorium was completely gutted back to the steel shell and the old six lane 25 yard pool was removed. In its place, a new energy efficient eight lane 25 yard competition pool was constructed. This pool is used for PE classes, lap swimming, recreation swimming, exercise classes and high school swim meets.

Stakeholder Questions, Suggestions and Concerns

Workshop #1 - April 16, 2013 My question is more about scope for the pool. Will there be 6 or 8 lanes? Will

there be a diving well? How much spectator seating will there be? I would like to see the stands closer to the pool. I think we need around 300 seats.

Are there any pools that you have built in this region? (We have done pools in Indiana, Florida and other states. We will bring some examples to show you. The pool consultant that we use designed the pool for the Olympic trials in Omaha.)

A question many of us have how will you get this all to fit with the limited space that we have on this site. Is this already planned or in process? (Right now it is all in process. We are testing the site to determine how it might best fit. We do have some diagrams, but the whole design will begin to unfold throughout the workshop. Workshop three is when you will begin to see options.)

I’ve had two students go through here and have two more to come. I have officiated at NCAA events. I have been at lots of pools. Should I wait to voice concerns now or wait. One concern is to never have glass at the end of the pool so swimmers don’t get sun in their eyes. (Much of this will come up as we talk about quality. We would love to take advantage of your expertise and input.

Central High School Auditorium and Swimming Pool Project - April 30, 2013

Stakeholder Questions, Suggestions and Concerns

Workshop #1 - April 16, 2013 Will this pool be an 8 lane pool? (That is currently the plan, but that will be

affected as we work to balance the project’s scope, quality and cost.) That leads me to a question. I heard rumors about the new gym. I heard there

were problems with the foundations that resulted in cost over runs. Since these costs weren’t covered in the budget, there aren’t new bleachers in the gym. Working within the budget is great, but we need to have 100% good, not 85% good. Will corners have to get cut? What will we have to give up if we find there are some issues that come up? ((My understanding is that the new gym was never going to be a competitive gym and bleachers really weren’t planned. Sprinkling was cut, but that has been fixed at this point. The footing issues caused more of a site issue than a cost issue. The project came in over bid and that’s why we had to cut things from it. Site is without question the most challenging part of this project. We will spend some time testing the site and presenting the information)

A 50 yard pool is not the answer. We swim 25 yards. Parking is already bad here. Is that a third component? (Definitely)

Stakeholder Questions, Suggestions and Concerns Workshop #1 - April 16, 2013

I swam here as a student and my daughter swims here. The district is trying to rebrand itself as a district of distinction. I look at this as an opportunity for the whole district to improve. This is our chance to do it right and be the school and the district that everyone wants to be. We should be smart about the budget, but we need this to be a WOW. (Thank you. These are monumental parts of the building and they can be architecturally significant for the building. It’s also most important that they work well!)

Orchestra Director—I appreciate swimming although I’m not a swimmer. Going off of your comment about the district of distinction. I served on a committee that talked about creating a small performing arts school downtown. I gave them ideas about what might make that possible, but it seemed that people were interested in getting artists getting out of the schools rather than keeping a wonderful mix of students in the schools. I think this project gives this the opportunity to return Central to its Heyday. Students need a home that showcases where they perform. I appreciate this opportunity and, if successful, we won’t need to have a separate facility that pulls kids out of the existing high school.

Central High School Auditorium and Swimming Pool Project - April 30, 2013

Stakeholder Questions, Suggestions and Concerns

Workshop #1 - April 16, 2013 I just wanted to thank the administrators who have been involved in this project.

We have been waiting a long time. I appreciate the opportunity to provide input. We want to be as involved as possible. Both facilities are old and we may not have another opportunity for a long time to make these kinds of improvements. We want to make sure everything is right. Thanks for providing us with the opportunity.

This is the single largest amount of money spent on the district schools in a long time. We want to make sure we do it right. That’s why we have gone through the detailed process we have to select the design team and why we are coordinating the Community Outreach and Input Workshop Process. The more people we can get to attend, the better. The more people you can encourage to come to the workshops, the better the project will be.

Can you be sure to include the things that happened at the front part of the meeting along with the stakeholder comments? (Yes. The PowerPoints will all be included on the website as well.)
