South Africa has legislated extensively on occupational health and safety. Two major Acts regulate
occupational health and safety viz. the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 (“OHASA”)
and the Mine Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996 (“MHSA”).
Each Employer/Principal Contractor bears a moral & legal obligation to ensure a safe and healthy
workplace. It is apparent that more stringent measures will have to be adopted by Employers/Principle
Contractors as a matter of urgency to ensure that health, and especially safety is not compromised and
compliance is met.

Currently cooperatives are battling to survive because of a lack of understanding and inability by members to operate them. There is a need to educate new members as well as re-educate
the existing members about the meaning of cooperatives. The quest of competitive advantage can no longer be found simply in lower cost or higher quality or better service, instead it lies in adaptability, flexibility, speed aggressiveness and
innovativeness. These five come down to one: entrepreneurship.
