Johannes Brahms was past 40 before he published his firstsymphony. Asked by his publisher about his productivity,Brahms responded with words that captured the feelings ofmany of his comrades: "How am I to write in the “shadow” ofthat giant, Beethoven?" Some - Chopin and Wagner, forexample – mostly avoided the traditional genres in whichBeethoven had so spectacularly triumphed. Others, such asHector Berlioz and Franz Liszt, boldly reimagined Beethoven’sforms in order to make their mark. Brahms himself ultimatelyembraced Beethoven’s classical flame and made it burn brightonce more. Through careful listening, analysis, and discussionwe will tell the dramatic story of Beethoven’s successors, andhow they lived and sometimes triumphed despite -- andbecause of -- the master’s shadow.
