Concentrate HI5-5
Hyperform Concentrate HI5-5 is a 5% concentrate of Hyperform HPN-68 in a carrier blend composed of a 20 MFR polypropylene medium impact copolymer and proprietary dispersants. This product is intended for use in all opaque polypropylene molding and extrusion applications.
USAGE LEVEL
A typical use level for Hyperform Concentrate HI5-5 is 2% (50:1). This letdown ratio provides a level of 0.1% (1000 ppm) of Hyperform HPN-68 in the final polymer.
BLENDING PROCEDURES
The HI5-5 concentrate may be blended like any other additive or color concentrate via tumble blending prior to processing. Or, if dedicated concentrate feeders are available, the HI5-5 concentrate may be introduced above the feed throat of the processing equipment where the concentrate can be blended with the target polymer.
PROCESSING CONDITIONS
No significant changes in extrusion or molding processes are anticipated with the use of the HI5-5 concentrate. As with other concentrates used in injection molding, a moderate amount of back pressure may be used to enhance the mixing of the concentrate within the target resin.
The higher polymer crystallization temperature imparted by the HI5-5 may require upward process temperature adjustments, but only if it is deemed that the molded article had been adversely affected by premature freezing.
REGULATORY STATUS
All of the components of HyperformConcentrate HI5-5 are registered by the FDA for use in polypropylene in contact with all food types under Conditions of use B through H. All of the components are also registered with the European Food Safety Authority for food contact plastic materials. The concentrate may be used at a maximum level of 5 weight percent of the polymer.

APPLICATIONS
Hyperform nucleating agents can be used in all injection and extrusion applications to improve the processing speed, dimensional stability, and physical properties of polypropylene. The Hyperform HI5-5 Concentrate provides these same benefits, but is only recommended for opaque applications.
While the HI5-5 concentrate would generally be considered for use with non-nucleated polypropylene resins, excellent improvements in nucleation performance and warpage control have also been observed when the HI5-5 concentrate has been let-down into resins already containing nucleators such as talc, sodium benzoate, or pigment colorants.
