Conference Background
Early beginning
•A “tap” from PhilDHRRA’s strategic plan
•Just like a routine of development work
–Not so exciting –Seems to be just one of the various issues that NGOs will have to face–Is it a big deal?
Conference Background
A “pinch” from LWR
• PhilDHRRA was requested to submit a proposal to organize a conference for its partners– LWR-Philippines got a mandate from its head
office to take action on climate change– Existing and future projects must be climate
responsive
Conference Background
Opening a Pandora’s Box and a Treasure Chest at the same time?
• PhilDHRRA requested SUCCEED to undertake a research on Climate Change.
• The research findings created a heart pounding jolt!– Global Warming poses a grave danger to humanity.– No issue has “united” the world as profound as this.
• Common perception among CSOs, scientific communities, governments, big and small businesses and even school children!
– Big potential for a reflow of wealth from developed to developing countries!
– Can potentially cure the “malnutrition” of many NGOs are suffering in terms of funding.
Conference Background
Making the idea larger than itself
• Why not make it big?– Proposal to expand participation in the conference were sent to
FPE and was readily approved in principle. – PhilDHRRA national sent a proposal to World Bank CSF and
was approved also.– We asked other FAs, No time for fund processing, but they will
send their NGO partners. CAFOD, PEF, other MINGO members.• Climate change is a special issue. Why not do it in an
unusual way? It should be a conference with a plus!– A pre-conference interactive website– A pre-conference Video trailer – Marry climate change agenda and social entrepreneurship– Make the conference rich with video and animated
documentaries to demystify the physical and social science of it.

Conference BackgroundRATIONALE
Conference Background
Rationale:
• While climate change has already become a global agenda, it has been observed that civil society organizations operating in Mindanao are not entirely adept to these issues, much more with operating frameworks on how to integrate the concern in the day to day operations of doing development work thru various community based projects.
• Be ready. Funding and donor institutions would soon require rationalization of the related issues in the design, development and implementation in community projects proposed for grant funding.
• A trend is unfolding that initiatives for climate change mitigation and
adaptation would potentially broaden the financial resource base of CSOs as concepts of carbon trading and offsetting could possibly be a possible future source of funding for non-profit organizations, if the dynamics of such are fully understood.
