Dear Delegates,

There’s never been a more exciting time to be in retail. Our industry is experiencing unprecedented disruption, creating incredible opportunities and placing innovation at the heart of everything we do.

On behalf of the Board of the Retail Council of Canada, we are thrilled to welcome you to Canada’s premier retail conference, RCC’s STORE 2016, which will be our biggest and most important conference ever.

Over the next two days, you will have the opportunity to come together with your peers to learn new strategies, share ideas, and recognize companies and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to our industry.

Whether it’s our dynamic line up of speakers, the unique networking opportunities, or any one of the incredibly innovative new additions this year, we know you’re in for a one of a kind experience.

The theme of STORE 2016 is #RETAILMATTERS, and the organizing committee has put together a remarkable collection of speakers, each of whom bring unique perspectives and fresh ideas on the trends and innovations that are driving the retail industry. We are pleased to welcome some of the biggest names in retail, including Saks Fifth Avenue Canada President Marc Metrick, Hointer CEO Nadia Shouraboura, T&T Supermarket CEO Tina Lee, and Ethan Song, Co-Founder, CEO & Creative Director of Frank & Oak.

In the coming days, you’ll hear from some of our industry’s brightest minds on the challenges and opportunities that are shaping retail in Canada, from the rise of experiential shopping and changing customer habits, to the melding of the physical and digital worlds, to technical innovations like wearables, the Internet of things, and big data.

We encourage you to visit the great vendors and suppliers in the Networking Hall, and once again this year we are hosting the Retail as a Career silent auction, with all proceeds benefiting the Canadian Retail Institute to support education and career opportunities for aspiring retail professionals.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to the amazing industry volunteers, suppliers and sponsors, and of course our powerhouse line-up of speakers, who helped make STORE 2016 possible.

On behalf of Retail Council of Canada, thank you for your participation in the STORE 2016 Conference. We hope it is a valuable experience for you and your business, and that it will enhance and revitalize your outlook on #RETAILMATTERS.

The definition of retail has changed for consumers. Shopping is no longer about utility, but instead about entertainment. Experiential shopping creates an emotional connection to every aspect of our customers’ lives. During this session Marc Metrick, President of Saks Fifth Avenue, will present how the Saks Canada stores at Eaton Centre and Sherway Gardens were built with this vision in mind, and how the Saks business will continue on this journey with the consumer.

At one time, retailers had strong emotional connections to their customers through traditional Brick and Mortar stores. But the advent of ecommerce and the battle for the consumer’s attention has changed the landscape of what “traditional retail” once was. Mobile and the pace of its adoption, coupled with an ever-widening range of digital capabilities, have opened a new dimension of opportunity for giving consumers differentiated and rewarding experiences that will generate loyalty and drive performance. Calvin McDonald, Sephora’s President and CEO, will discuss how his team embraced digital and combined innovation and collaboration to consistently reinforce the emotional connection and maintain Sephora’s leadership in the prestige beauty space.

Transformation and change are the underpinning of retail today as customers expect retailers to provide a comparable online experience to Amazon which employs 20,000 engineers and a $12B R&D budget. Successful retailers will have to learn to become technology companies in order to stay relevant to the consumer but they will have to do it on a much smaller budget. A key differentiator will be how they choose to leverage their existing assets including the brick & mortar. Hear some of the key learnings that Raif has drawn from Loblaw’s journey, building an omni-channel experience across Joe Fresh, Beauty Boutique, two loyalty programs and Click & Collect online grocery in four banners.

Most loyalty programs are based on the idea of rewarding a customer for their purchase. This limits their engagement with customers to one or two interactions. As a result, increasing the attractiveness of loyalty schemes usually means increasing the cost of programs (customers receive more points, or get better rewards for less) which reduces overall ROI. Using multiple touch points like gamification, social and digital interactions, rewards, lotteries, and in-store beacon technology, retail marketers can find new sources of engagement and strong emotional connections that drive loyalty at a fraction of the cost. In this session, new cost-effective ways of leveraging emotional loyalty to increase customer engagement will be presented and discussed.

Digital media and mobile devices have fundamentally changed how people find, interact with and buy products and services. While this introduces new challenges for retailers, it also opens up new opportunities for forward-looking organizations to grow sales at the store level by micro-targeting the right message to the right person at just the right time. By employing a combination of local and interest-based digital targeting, retail organizations are able to deliver measurable results at a fraction of the cost of other approaches.

Join this entertaining and informative session to learn how your retail organization can apply a proven “digital domination” approach using a combination of social media, search and programmatic display advertising to grow measurable store-by-store sales.

Our phones have become witnesses to our accomplishments. As we live symbiotically within our apps, there are an ever-increasing number of victories in our digital lives – like achieving a workout goal or beating a high score in a game – that are of value to us but which are not celebrated justly through simple buttons and banners.

Brand engagement on mobile cannot be a rehash of the old model – it must be re-designed and re-imagined. Brands can no longer be interrupters; they need to be reciprocators, natively threaded into these moments to deliver unexpected value for consumers. Do people actually order “fresh” produce online? Will aging boomers consider switching their regular trip to the grocery store for an online service? Does ordering grocery online mean a price premium will be charged on the foods ordered? Can food retailers ever make money? Online grocery is expected to grow at an 18-21% CAGR over the next five years. With such an impressive increase, grocery is uniquely able to understand the details of how customers buy online.

In this session, gain insights on the strategies, capabilities and tactics that have been successfully used in grocery in both the US and other markets and understand how these learnings can be applied to your industry in Canada.

Ethan Song CO-FOUNDER, CEO & CREATIVE DIRECTORFRANK + OAK@mrethansong @frankandoak

Ethan Song’s personal and entrepreneurial journey is deeply connected to the journey of Frank + Oak, one of Canada’s most exciting retail and fashion brands that he co-founded in 2012. As a first-generation immigrant from China, Song understood the importance of redefining worlds and making your mark. Outfitted with a creative mindset and a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, he set out to explore the intersection of art and technology to create new experiences. From Shanghai, to Paris, to Vancouver and Montreal, Song developed his career on various continents and in various contexts, making his mark by redefining commerce. Indeed, Song understood that companies should be defined by the convergence of people around spaces and common interests, not trends. As he saw it, products and experiences should come together to create culture and community. And so, in 2012, he called upon his childhood friend and fellow entrepreneur, Hicham Ratnani and co-founded Frank + Oak with an inventive approach to integrating design and technology. Today, Frank + Oak continues to set itself apart as a brand that redefines commerce on all fronts, from product to marketing campaigns and online or in-store shopping experiences. Song, in turn, continues to redefine the world around him by collaborating on a wide array of creative and entrepreneurial endeavours.

For as long as Kristy Wieber can remember, she yearned for a career that would ignite her passions for art and fashion. Throughout her studies in Fashion Merchandising at Clark College in Vancouver, WA, Kristy would also draw and paint. Fascinated by cosmetics and the way in which it could transform any woman, Kristy worked with leading cosmetics brands in the U.S. and Canada, including Clinique, Prescriptives, Stila, and Philosophy for over fifteen years.
