CONSTRUCTION SAFETY PPT – VIBy AVINASH KUMAR GUPTA
VEHICLES
•reversing blind (don’t depend upon warning hooter)
•work near overhead power lines
•carrying unauthorized passengers
•poor maintenance
•overloading
•site congestion
•poor traffic layout
•uneven ground/ debris
CONSTRUCTION SAFETY PPT - VIPRECAUTIONS
– all drivers to have proper National License
– training
– go up & down the slop, rather than across it where ever practicable
– avoid overhead power lines & steep slopes while selecting routes
– speed limits clearly displayed
– speed limits to be reduced for adverse site condition/ work in progress
– unattended vehicle should have engine switched off
– tipping bodies should be lowered
– safety boots during loading/ unloading
Goalposts to compel drivers to lower crane and excavator jibs, andavoid contact with overhead power lines
INSPECTION OF VEHICLES
• Daily – water, oil, fuel, lights, inflation of tyre and breaks
• (WOFLIB)
• Week - Check by fitter
• periodic - service centre of manufacturer
OVERTURNING
• use barriers, fixed stops
• construction vehicles are unstable & liable to overturn
• not to turn at excessive speed
• protection from falling objects
• if vehicle begins to topple over remain in the seat and do not try to jump clear
LOADING
• loads should be evenly distributed, properly secured and should not project
• projections to be shown by attachment of flays
• uneven load restrict in loss of control
• body of tipper lorry always be lowered
REMEMBER
• If your vehicle begins to topple over, remain in the seat and do not try to jump clear
• Keep your vehicle tidy and the cab free from tools and material which might obstruct the controls.
• Keep to speed limits.• Do not carry unauthorized passengers.• Do not drive across a slope.
Movement of Materials• Cranes
(a)weight, size & type of load
(b)Maximum road or reduces requirement
(c)Restriction - overhead powerline, state of the site, type of ground
(d)Need of trained operators/ --------
• Erections
-skilled workers
–follow manufactures instruction
SIGNALING
• must be > 18 years
• trained & experienced
• signaling system (use telephone)
• hand signed should be clear & distinct
Hand signals to crane drivers should beclear and distinct, and should follow a
recognized code or system
OVERLOADING• mark with safe working load
• operator to estimate the load correctly
• safe working load with every radius in derricking job
– not allow the load to swing
– don’t overlok the indicator
SAFE LOAD INDICATOR• job cranes should have automatic safe
load indicator
• warn by hooter
• take into account the effect of wind/ soft ground conditions
• raise the load and stop – guess the load than continue
• Don’t overlook the indicator
Maintenance
– wire ropes
– brakes
– safety devices
Mobile cranes
• liable to overturn or soft, wet ground, during vainer
• Adequate clearance for crane’s jib/ boom
• 4m from overhead power lines
• sufficient counter weight
• no drain pipes beneath the outrigger pads
Tower Cranes• prevent overturning
• anchored to the ground, security counterweighted
• load to be lifted vertically
• avoid large area loads during winds
• specify maximum wind
• free to rotate @ 3600
Mobile cranes should operate withoutriggers extended to prevent
overturning
Cranes: The need for a safety hook fitted with a latch to prevent displacement of loads is explained to workers
Good Hoists
Erection
• erection, extension, dismantling by a specialist/ competent supervisor
• tower/ mast to be securely filled to building/ scaffold & maintained vertical
• Maximum height of 18m or as specified by manufacturer
GOOD HOISTSENCLOSURE
• at the ground level of ht of lm
• suitable gates
• remainder to be enclosed with wire mesh
• gates should be filled at every platform level
• use safely devices in the in the event of failure of hoist rope or driving gear
GOOD HOISTS
• Loads
– safe carrying load to be marked
– not to be overloaded
– loose bricks not be carried in open hoist platform
– no one to be allowed to ride on the platform
– carriage of persons through lifts
GOOD HOISTS
Testing & examination
• tested & examined after installation
• weekly checks to be recorded
REMEMBER
• If you cannot see the load all the time, you need a signaller.
• Beware of exceeding the safe working load when trying to free a stuck load.
• Never climb up the tower or get onto the boom while the crane is in use.
• Make sure the load you are lifting is properly secured
