Containerized Biological Treatment Unit-MBBR
GENERAL PRINCIPAL
In collaboration with Biowater Technology AS we provide containerized solutions for the wastewater treatment that use the advanced technologies CFIC® (Continuous Flow Inter-mittent Cleaning) or CFAS® (Combined Fixed-Film Activated Sludge) with biofilm carriers,
aeration, retention sieves, mixing tanks as well as any tertiary treatment or additional equipment to suit the design. The above technologies are advanced high rate wastewater treatment processes that utilize free-floating media to carry active biomass in an attached form biofilm, while the Activated Sludge process supplements the amount of biomass in a suspended form. These technologies operate as a hybrid reactor by combining simultaneously the attached growth process and suspended growth process and require less energy than traditional MBBR processes. All reactors in our plants are filled with bio-carriers which are non-clogging and have very high ef-fective surface-area rate. The specific area provided by the bio-carriers used is 850 m2/m3. On these carriers (moving media) the active microorganisms are grown and attached in the form of a bio-film. At the same time an amount of biomass exists in all bio-reactors in the form of suspended solids and is usually referred as MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids). It is the net total of all active Biomass (microorganisms) that contributes to the high rate biodegradation of this process used in our Bio-Plants.In the aerobic tank the bio-carriers are kept in continuous motion with the use of air (bubbles), which is diffused through fine or medium air diffusers at the bottom of the reactors and also provides the required oxygen for the formation and growth of the microorganisms in order to consume the or-ganic pollutants inside the reactor. In the anoxic tank (dinitrification process) the bio-carriers are kept in continues motion, via a submersible low speed mixer which is operating under a protective grid in
Biowater’s proprietary CFIC® is the next genera-tion MBBR biofilm technology that offers indus-try-leading performance compared to widely used Activated Sludge and MBBR solutions. The small footprint, combined with Biowater’s ap-proach to process design makes this far more
versatile than existing solutions, making it very suitable for a wide range of existing WWTP.

How it works
CFIC® reactor contains highly packed biofilm carriers to a degree (typi-
cally 90-99% bulk volumetric fill) that little move-ment of the carriers occurs in the reactor during normal operation.Microorganisms in the biofilm that attach on the
surface of the carriers take up pollutants as food for growth. The CFIC® process has continuous inflow to the bioreactor and intermittent cleaning, using influ-ent wastewater, which removes excess biomass (sludge) from the biofilm carriers.
The CFAS® (Combined F ixed-Film Activated Sludge)
The Biowater CFAS® (IFAS) utilizes the ben-efit of a traditional activated sludge pro-cess combined with a biological fixed-film
system to create a highly efficient waste-water treatment plant in a much smaller footprint.
The process begins with the introduction of polyethylene biomass carriers into the activated sludge. The activated sludge removes the majority of the BOD while the biofilm is allowed to grow in the protected biomass carrier. The biomass in turn oxidizes the ammonia. The Biowater CFAS® (IFAS) is par-ticularly well suited for retrofitting existing activated sludge plants to add nitrification as well as increasing the BOD removal in the same tank. The Biowater CFAS® IFAS is also perfect for use in new construction and prefab-ricated containerized units.

ment under variable loads – No clogging
KEY FEATURES & BENEFITSA number of benefits derive from the use of CFIC®
& CFAS® process in the UW Tech Bio-Plants:
THE NEW UW-TECH’S CONTAINERIZED BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT UNIT
UW-Tech provides a wide range of container-ized biological treatment units (UW-BOX) start-ing from 20m3/d up to 400m3/d (depending of the effluent requirements). This unit is the main treatment part of an integrated Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP).
There are two main models; the New model called UW-BOX-CFIC® that provides high BOD removal efficiency rates (more than 90% and more than 98% with the use of tertiary treatment) & the model UW-BOX-CFAS® which except the high BOD removal efficiency rates (more than 93%) includes full nitrification/de-nitrification
• Recycling of water and wastewater for re-use by using tertiary filtration (MF/UF) or sand-filter
• Fully automatic operation with remote moni-toring is possible (Minimum Attendance)
• Low energy requirements and low opera-tion cost
• Excellent Treatment Efficiency and Effluent Quality
• Odor Free, Clog free, quick start up
process (with 1 addi-tional compartment) and optional chemical phosphorus removal. All models can be
transported by standard road-trucks or shipped inside ISO container in order to reach even the most distant and remote part of the world. This fact makes our Treatment Units the easiest and fastest way to implement a WWTP at any ter-rain and under any condition. Furthermore, can be equipped with Anti-frost pack (includes frost protection, heated engine-room, insulated and top-closed tanks). Standard in all models, the engine-room includes lockable doors for secu-rity reasons.
For bigger models an additional machine-room may be required (prefabricated or not) in order to install the air-blowers, the electrical switch board (MCC) and also to accommodate a small office for the operator and/or a storage area. The boxes can be combined (working in paral-lel treatment lines) in order to provide technical

As a result, biomedia technolo-gy is considered more robust and efficient compared to the
conventional activate sludge technology. In the reactor we have carriers (or else floating media) where the effective mass of microorganisms called attached growth process is attached. At the same time into the reactor a mass of microorganisms is suspended called suspended growth pro-cess. All reactors in our plants are filled with bio-carriers which are non-clogging and have very high effective-surface area.In the anoxic tank (denitrification process) the bio-carriers are kept in continues mo-tion, via a submersible low speed mixer which is operating under a protective grid
Because of its robustness, its flexibility and its efficiency, the technologies CFIC® & CFAS® can be used for both Domestic wastewater (e.g. Municipali-ties, hotels, house complexes, camps etc) and Industrial wastewater (food & drink industry, cosmetics, etc for details please contact us for consultation).
APPLICATIONS
Complementary equipment for a complete WWTP
The UW-Tech’s Biological Treatment Unit (UW-BOX) is part of an integrated Treatment Facility com-monly referred to as Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP).In order to have a complete WWTP some additional equipment maybe needed:
• A Pretreatment Stage including coarse (10-40mm) following by a fine (5-6 mm) screening, grit-sand and grease removal. A compact prefabricated unit is recommended for this application.
• Equalization tank (prefabricated or concrete) with feeding submersible sewage pumps (sub-mersible mixer might be advisable) and/or air diffusers.
• Sludge storage tank (prefabricated or concrete) or Containerized Sludge Dewatering Unit (de-canter or screw press and sludge floculator) and Sludge thickener.
• Tertiary treatment with chlorination and optional tertiary filtration (a clean water storage tank for water reuse might be advisable)
in order to protect contact with the media (bio-carri-ers). In the aerobic tank (nitrification process) the car-riers are kept in continues motion with the use of air (bubbles), which is diffused through fine or medium air diffusers at the bottom of the reactors and expe-dites the formation and growth of the microorganisms in order to consume the organic pollutants inside the reactor.
Notice: All the above treatment stages and facilities should be designed and dimensioned by qualified designer engineers.
• For bigger models might be required an additional room (prefabricated or not – see above reference). Please consult our local distributor for further details.
