Booklets for Parent/Patient Education in Early Juvenile Chronic Arthritis
P. Havukainen, T. Strom The Finnish Rheumatism Association, Helsinki, Finland
Written information is needed to supplement in- structions given to parents of children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA). It seemed to us that a comprehensive book of JCA might not be advisable in the early phase of the disease. We therefore designed a series of 10 booklets, 6 to 12 pages each, which can be delivered to the families one or two at a time to meet their individual needs. The booklets are available through all pediatric hospital departments in the country.
The following topics are covered:
(1) the nature and course of the disease. (2) chronic iridocyclitis, (3) occupational therapy. (4) physiotherapy and activities at school
and during free-time (5) growing into adulthood with JCA (6) drug therpay (7) JCA and the family (psychological
aspects)
(8) surgical treatment (9) social security, and (10) nutrition.
The texts have been written by several profes- sionals but revised by one writer. The information given stresses the overall good prognosis of JCA and the active role of the parents. The drawings il- lustrating the booklets are in harmony with the contents: optimistic and not too detailed. Many parents and educationalists have set a high value on the booklets because of sensible substance and understandable composition.

Dr. Klaus Barbara University of Cologne, Germany. Humanbiology and Health Ed. Res. Unit
Patients with high blood cholesterol and other risk-factors of coronary heart diseases such as overweight and hypertriglyceridaemia were advis- ed by their doctor to take part in a course of healthy nutrition. The title “Healthy Nutrition” should direct them to the intention of the lessons: The patients should be able to plan their meals in order to lower their high values and not only to loss their weight. They were also informed on the meaning and the pratical way of more locomotion. Every participant got the chance to pick out one or two possibilities to change his meals at his own re- sponsibility. Every week he could control the suc- cess or failure of his effort by measuring his weight, blood cholesterol and triglycerides. At the end of the course lasting twelve weeks the par- ticipants have decreased significantly their mean value of blood cholesterol by 9% and their weight in the average by 3.5 kg.
