Distance Learning (DL) mediated by ICTs

• Constructivist perspective• Practical rationalization• Situated and distributed

knowledge construction• Building on previous knowledge

(scaffolding)

Page 3: Cooperative and collaborative learning in virtual environments

Historic background• Industrial model based on work division

– mass production – emphasis on the results (50´-60´”fordism”)

• Autonomy and independance of students – exclusion of the teacher from the system (70´ distance universities-behaviourism-multimedia learning pack)

• Interaction and communication – situated learning (80´onwards)

Page 4: Cooperative and collaborative learning in virtual environments

Situated learning based on:

• Practical rationalization which priviledges “doing” rather than “results”

• Knowledge acquisition and what is done in it – the result is a consequence of the process

Page 5: Cooperative and collaborative learning in virtual environments

The process implies:• Interaction with the rest of students.

i.e.: priviledged space for social construction of knowledge through cooperative and collaborative learning

• Work rationalized from a constructivist perspective (not with a utilitarian character)

• At present DL implies using ICTs - Internet

Page 6: Cooperative and collaborative learning in virtual environments

Democratic aspect• Social need to bring education

close to those places with difficult acces to it.

• Education for everybody in equality of conditions

Page 7: Cooperative and collaborative learning in virtual environments

Conclusions• En el contexto actual rescatar el trabajo

(Litwin 2005; 9)
