Simple GISCrime Analysis and Mapping Assignment
ASSIGNED: September 10, 2003
DUE: September 22, 2003
SUBMISSION:Submission system (course=cos312, submission=SimpleGIS)
Submit the project file, all data files, and Word documentation as described below.
Based on exercises developed by and data provided by
Laurie A.B. Garo, Dept. of Geography and Earth Sciences
University of North Carolina - Charlotte
The crime data used in this example is from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC) Police Department and includes incidents of a widevariety of crimes that occurred in Mecklenburg County in 1999. Additional data includes a shapefile containing Charlotte
neighborhoods along with some neighborhood-based data.
You should create your map with ArcView using the X:\cos312\CAM directory. Please use these directory names including the samecapitalization.
The data files needed for this assignment may be downloaded from this link in ZIP format or may be copied to user space under Linuxand then used under XP through the mounted X: drive.
machine:~/cos312/CAM$ cp ~btoll/public_html/f03/res/a/CAM.zip .
The following files are included:
CrimeAssign.mxdcwac2000.shpcwac2000.dbf cwac2000.shxcwac2000.prjclip_crimes.shpclip_crimes.dbf clip_crimes.prjclip_crimes.sbnclip_crimes.shxcwacbirth.dbf cwaccompdata.dbf cwacdropdata.dbf kinderscores.dbf
Useful examples (Crime Query and Map Design) may be consulted.
Metadata describing the contents of the files is also available.
Assignment GradingSince the detailed instructions are quite lengthy, the grading template is presented here so it will not be lost at the end of the document. The submitted assignment should include 2 views as part of an ArcView project and 4 Layouts with analysis included in Worddocuments.

1 Create a folder cos312\CAM and copy and unzip the data to this directory. Change the name of the map to CAM.mxd. The mapalready contains the following layers: 1999 homicides, Crime Incidents in Charlotte Neighborhoods, Juvenile Crime Rate, and the datatable jacwac99.
2 Following the procedure used in the example to join the juvenile crime rate data to the neighborhood file, join the other QOL (qualityof life) files to the Juvenile Crime Rate file. These files are: Income Change, Adolescent Births, Competency, Dropout Rate, andKindergarten Scores.
3 For ease of reference, change duplicate field names and turn off the display of some fields. From the Juvenile Crime Rate layer in the
Table of Contents, right click to Properties>Fields>select field to modify. For the Juvenile Crime Rate at tribute table, change the
Alias column in the properties table to change the displayed name. Uncheck the visible box to remove the field from view. NOTE: Inorder to change the classification name to "Juvenile Quotient" it is necessary to re-do the Symbology definition.
The following changes should be made:
For Juvenile Crime
turn ID, OID, and Name off Count to No. of Crimes by JuvenilesSum_nhood_ to Juvenile PopulationJuvenile_q to Juvenile Quotient
For Income Change
turn ID, OID, and Name off 1st Median_Hou to Median Household Income '902nd Median_Hou to Median Household Income '98Percent_ch to Income Change 90-98
For Adolescent Births
turn ID, OID, Name and N8 off Count to Total BirthsSum_Under1 to Sum Births-Mother<19Sum_Prenat to Sum Births w/PrenatalZ_Under_19 to Percent Births-Mother<19Z_After_1S to Percent Prenatal After 1st Trimester
For Competency
turn ID, OID, and Name off Count to Sum Students - CompetencySum_pass_ to Sum Students Passed Competency

For Kindergarten Scores
turn ID, OID, and Name off Number_of_ to Sum Kindergarten StudentsAverage_te to Kindergarten Average Test Score
Analysis and Mapping
Two analysis operations are required for this assignment. For each, create a new data frame: Insert>Data Frame so that a separatelayout may be created for each.
1. Juvenile Crime Rate and Crime Against Juveniles
1 Set up the data frame.
copy the Juvenile Crime Rate layercopy the Crime Incidents in Charlotte Neighborhoods layer, renaming it "All Crimes in Neighborhhods"
2 Name the dataframe "Crimes Against Juveniles"
query All Crime In Neighborhoods for crimes against juveniles (ages 16 and under)convert this result to a layer and rename it as "Crimes Against Juveniles"
3 Create other layers
query and create a new layer for crimes taking place in schoolsquery and create a layer for missing persons under 16query and create a layer for crime against family - abusequery and create a layer for crime against family - neglect of children
4 Assign appropriate names to the layers and associate appropriate crime symbols for each theme.
5 Create maps.
Create a graduated color choropleth map of Juvenile Crime Rate using Juvenile Quotient as the classification fieldTurn on the Crimes Against Juveniles layer - you may wish to experiment with different numbers of classes and classification
methodsCreate a layout using Juvenile Crime Rate and selected Crimes Against JuvenilesInclude title, scale, and legendBe sure the colors used produce a readable, pleasant map
Place the layout in a Word document (with the dataframe selected, use Edit>Copy Map to Clipboard and paste into Word)
Write a brief statement in the same Word document discussing your analysis of the resulting map. NOTE: potential correlations youmay see are not statistically proven.
2. Correlation Between QOL Variables and Locations of Crimes Against
Juveniles
In this analysis, you will create a new dataframe and investigate relationships between crimes committed against juveniles and thequality of life variables that were joined to the table earlier.
1 Create a new dataframe.
Select the dataframe from part 1, select and copy Juvenile Crime Rate and all individual crime layers.Rename the dataframe as "QOL Variables and Crime Against Juveniles".
2 Create a Map Layout.
Rename the Juvenile Crime Rate layer as "Dropout Rate".Create a choropleth map by modifying the Dropout Rate layer so that the classification field is Dropout Rate.Overlay at least 2 of the crimes against juveniles layers - select crimes that you believe may have some correlation

Create a layout of the resulting mapBe sure that color assignments are well chosenInclude appropriate titles, legends, etc.Choose an appropriate name - such as Dropout Rate with Child Neglect and Crime at Schools
3 Create 2 additional Layouts.
For each:
Copy and paste the Dropout Rate layer
Rename the layer and change the classification variableOverlay at least two layers and produce a layout as listed above
4 Document your Layouts
Place each layout in a Word documentWrite a brief analysis of potential correlations for each layout
Extra Credit (20 points maximum)
Devise, perform, and document a method to examine correlation between QOL variables. For example, investigate correlationsbetween Dropout Rate and Median Household Income.
Use your technique to investigate 2 possible correlations.Create a dataframe and a Layout for each.Copy layouts into a Word document.Include a written analysis of potential correlation.Include a discussion of your technique.
