PREFACE
According to historical account the I irst Canadian a:ensus wasinitiated in 1666 by Jean Baptiste Talon (1625-1694), appointedtnt, endant of New France. Talon is considered "the fat.her of moderncensus in Canada", because his enumeration reported 3,215inhaL:)itants, the basic resources and needs ®f the colc)nies andcommenced the practice clf taking future census on a regular basis.
BefoL-e 1841, there was no statute passed in many Canadianprovinces for taking census regularly. VaL-ious attempts were madeon an irregulai-basis, in Nova Scotia (1811,1817,1827, and 1828)and in Quebec (1825 and 1831).
In Upper Canada (Ontario) there was from 1793 (3 George Ill,C2) a series of ordinances or statutes requiring the taking of a.census every year, starting with "a true and Complete list of everymale and female" resident in each district but later reverting toa nominal listing of the heads of households. Some of theselistings have survived the passing of time. By 1851, the custom oftaking the names of family members every ten years was established®By 1867, the taking of the census became a constitutionalrequirement in t.he formation of the country of Canada by the unionof Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. In 1871, thefirst Dominion census was conducted anc]. the County of Brant a,ensuswas transcribed by the heac!.s of hciuseholds in ha-i-cl. €f:jF.y analpublished by The OntaLrio Genealogical ,Society.
The following census of 1824, 1827, 1829 and 1832 wet-r-Itranscribed from Reels 11 ancl 12, Gore District., Grand River Tract..Haldimand Township (later Brant.ford Township, Brant County) at theKitchener Public Library, 85 Queen Street North, Kitchener, OntarioN2H 2Hl. In 1816, the Gore District was formed and DumfriesTownships, Brantford Township and Tuscarora Township (Six NationsReservation) became part of the Gore District. Burford Township and.Oakla.nd Township became part of t.he BL-ock District.
It was dif ficult to decipher the names of the household headsdue to variations in spelling and faded entries. The settlement ofpeople on the Grand River Tract increases in the 1820's and 1830'sdue to the sale of India.n lands.
From t.he book "Sketches of Upper Carl.ada," by J®hn Howison, Esq. ofthe Honourable East India Company's Service,1825 (p.160-161). Thefollowing description is about life on the Grand River:
"The Grand River is navigable for schoonersthirty miles above its mouth, and for large heatsmuch farther. This is a circ.umstanc-e of grea.timportance, as its banks abound with beds ofgypsum, or sulphate cjf lime, which has been foundto form an excellent manure. These are notregularly worked by anyone at present, therefcjE-ethe farmers whti require gypsum must quarry andconvey it down the Grand River themselves; and thisbeing always troublesome and often inconvenient, the mineral is much less employed in agriculturethan it ought to be. The sulphate of I.ime forms avery powerful manure. Two bushels are sufficientfor an acre when properly applied, and the effectproduced by these continues at. least a couple ofyears. It differs altogether in its af.;dJtion fromcommon liITie, being particularly suitable for ligFi+,sandy soils that have been exhausted. by arepetition of the same kind of crops.
Gypsurn will soon be in great demand throughoutthe westeL-n parts of the Province; I or many of theolder farms, a-i-e nearly wctrn out, in consequence ofthe injudicious system pursued by those whocultivate them. The farriie\rs have little idea of therotation of crops; either do they endeavour to keepthe soil rich and vigorous, by the timelapplication of manure. Corn succeeds corn, the land. is nearly exhausted, which generallyhappens in the course of eighteen oi-twenty years,- a length cif time which alike prove its r`at.-uralefvLcellence and shows that, u.ndeL-proper management,,its fertilit.y would for ages remain unimpairedo The'finest and most. ext.ensive bei]. of gypsum that hasyet been discovered lies in t..he t.ownship ofDumfries, which belongs to William Dickson, Esq.This gent].eman liberally permits the farmer toquarry and carry away as much of the mineral, asthey please, free of expense=..".
On April 13,1830, an agreement was prepared whereby for thesum of five shillings, of the lawful. money of Upper Canada, anestimated area of 807 acres for the village site of Brantforcl waspurchased. The document was signed. by t.he followir}g Sachems and,Chiefs: Ja€c)b Ayonghwahtha, Henry Brant, Dekonagwasen, JacobShoriahowane, Lawrence Tharon-tenh-tha, Icak Teghennakarine, MosesShohsgoarowane, Lloseph Dwaserage, Peter Kant)ngwa.heye, Otatseghte,Wagerleyos, Awennoxsonton, Teghatkaht,os, Skanawatigh, Oneschazen,Skayeritaken, Oghnawai-a, Oghrenhregowa, Kannehdage, KanQugei-itawi,Kanayegh, Dekenyough, Dewa+_iron, Deyotoreghgon, Skawenatigh,
Kahwisda.nero, Dekawahgwen, Dayekawekt?, Kf?`yonanoran; Teatup, andHenry A. Hill.
The delivery cif thi= cieed of the\ site of the village was madein the presenc`e of John Brant (1794-1832), youngest son of ChiefJoseph Brant, then SuEie£-.i=ntendent c)f the Six Nat-.ion Indians;William Holme, Justice ctf the Peace; James Race.v, Justice of thePeace; Le~wis Burwell, the first land surveyor to settle in thearea; and John Norton, friend and tradeE-with the Indians.
