We are proud to introduce our new annual arts skills development courses for 2016.
If you are interested in pursuing and exploring the Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts, Music and Writing genres, this selection of workshops, intensives and masterclasses will appeal to the young creative in you. All courses are facilitated by credible industry professionals, and can be easily worked into your curriculum. They provide valuable insight into what it is to be a contemporary arts practitioner that textbooks alone can’t give you, and will develop the confidence and ability of creatives from every field.
These courses are designed to foster the skills of emerging creatives, who are serious about turning their passion into a profession through hands-on experience.

FOLIO DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPEMMA HOLLARD

Keeping a detailed folio is an important part of any artistic process, and essential for success in a visual arts degree. Over three practical sessions, recent Deakin Visual Arts Graduate Emma Hollard will show you what it takes to develop a high-quality folio that will give you the edge in any Visual Arts course, as well as exploring methods of tapping into your own innovative and dynamic creative thinking.
The Victorian College of the Arts comes to Geelong with a high-impact workshop that will prepare you for the dance audition process. Learn how to best prepare for your upcoming auditions with this practical two-day workshop, guided by industry professionals and practicing educators from the VCA. Focusing primarily (but not exclusively) on VCA Dance, it will also provide an insight into what a tertiary dance school will be looking for in a potential student through the audition process. Prior dance experience required, equivalent to Cecchetti/ RAD Intermediate, or VCE Level.

Positions at top-notch Arts institutions are often limited, and competition can be fierce. Nail that all-important audition with this 6 full-day intensive, focussing on skills development and audition preparation. WAAPA Graduate, Actor & Director Chris Parker and VCA Graduate, Singer, Actor and Vocal Coach Lisa Parker will take you through the process of fine-tuning your audition pieces, as well as physical and vocal warm-ups, tips on how to break down your monologues and songs, vocal health and technique, and mental preparation.

MATT HEYWARDMatt most recently appeared in the acclaimed revival of Cameron Mackintosh’s Les Miserables. He was an original Australian cast member of Mamma Mia!, The Producers, Monty Python’s Spamalot and The Addams Family. Other theatre credits include Mary Poppins, The Boy From Oz, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Mame, Damn Yankees, The Boyfriend, Sugar and Eurobeat.
AMANDA LABONTEAmanda works as an actor, theatre producer and voice & communication consultant and has worked with a variety of theatre companies throughout Melbourne, and appeared on Australian television dramas, film and commercials. Amanda is the Artistic Director of Essential Theatre and has a great passion and love for the language and universal themes of Shakespeare’s writing.
NATALIE O’DONNELLSince graduating from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts,t Natalie has appeared in many musical & theatre productions both here and internationally. Some of her highlights include Next to Normal, Hayes Theatre/Doorstep Arts, Murderous Instincts, West End, Mamma Mia Little Star Services, The Sunshine Club STC, Les Miserables Cameron Mackintosh, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, MTC, Jerry’s Girls and Crazy For You for The Production Company.

In this workshop you get to perform a song from a musical that you’ve prepared in front of a group. Your performance gets broken down, focussing on improving your storytelling, stagecraft, acting through song and vocal technique. A brilliant way to develop confidence in solo performing through one-on-one work and constructively observing others.
Although it is not a prerequisite, is advisable to consider under-taking the APPROACH TO SONG and EXPLORATION AND PREPARATION OF A MONOLOGUE classes before attend-
ing the Audition Masterclass to get the best results.

Work with Amanda as she helps you to approach and deliver a monologue for an audition. Amanda will work through some simple steps to assist you in developing a unique character and handle on the text, enabling you to perform with confidence and control. Shakespearian and contemporary monologues will be available to explore.
A detailed break-down of the Audition process for a major musical, including how to pick your best 16 bars, tips for cold reading a script, how to cope with a dance audition and a look at headshots and cv’s. A great way to develop confidence in all aspects of the audition process.
THE EMBODIED, PHYSICAL ACTORKIRSTY REILLY

A movement and physical approach to acting, this workshop encourages you to use your instinct, creativity, imagination and sense of play to deepen your acting technique. You will learn ways of inhabiting character more fully, deepen your presence and physical awareness in the performance space and come to know yourself on a deeper level.

This class encourages natural, spontaneous movement and personal interpretation. It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Workshops start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up to more elaborate dance routines.
Developing further the concepts explored in the open workshop, the ensemble will explore the group dynamic, ensemble unifying, devising physically based theatre and developing material for the future production. Emphasis will be on turning ideas into action, devising scenarios and images, and collaboration of ideas.

KIRSTY REILLYBachelor of Education in Dance/Drama/English, Post Grad Degree in Movement Studies N.I.D.A with Master teacher Keith Bain. Currently a teacher at VCA, 16 Street Acting Studio Melbourne and Moore Grace Acting Studio Geelong. Kirsty also offers Private Sessions for actors and performers in theatre, film and television to prepare auditions, improve craft one on one and resolve issues that may be causing blocks in their acting process.

Chantelle and Chelsea will take you on an inspired process to crafting your own personal story, feelings or words into a song to call your own. This is your chance to refine a current song you have had in your head, or recreate a known song with your own personal lyric or style.

Chelsea Gibb will take you through the beautiful process that is owning the song you sing, starting with making the lyric your own, showing you tricks to creating vocal power with ease, and learning to find joy and escape in songs that you love. Bring your own song, or choosing from two of Chelsea’s choices, and then take them through the process of making a song a most memorable performance.
CHANTELLE DELANEYChantelle has performed around the world, being heard by millions of people on many TV & radio shows and alongside artists such as: Grammy Award Winners David Foster, Olivia Newton-John and LeAnn Rimes, as well as, Jimmy Barnes and Slim Dusty, to name a few. Chantelle is currently busy writing and recording her debut album collaborating with Grammy Award winning songwriters.
CHELSEA RENTON GIBBBest known for her role as ‘Roxie Hart’ in CHICAGO, Chelsea Renton Gibb is one of Australia’s leading ladies of Musical Theatre. After graduating from WAAPA (Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts) Chelsea was cast as the lead role “Roxie Heart” in the Broadway sensation “CHICAGO”, a role she went on to play for four years. Chelsea went on to play Reno Sweeny in ANYTHING GOES, Ruby Red in GET HAPPY-The Musical , Queenie in Andrew Lippa’s, THE WILD PARTY, Anna in the critically acclaimed THE KING & I, and the new musical THE NEW BLACK at The Arts Centre, Melbourne, the Australian premiere of the musical DREAMSONG, CARRIE, and most recently performed with 10 of Australia’s biggest names in Musical Theatre in the Musical “Jerry’s Girls”.

Over three sessions, Steve Salo will guide you through painting a portrait of your own using oil paint. This Masterclass is limited to just 15 places, and is suitable for those with little experience, but also challenges the more experienced painter.
