Credit unions bring millions in savings to Maine members

D e s p i t e c h a l l e n g i n g economic times, more than 620,000 Mainers continue to celebrate the savings that come with being a Maine cred it u n ion member. A recent ly-relea sed st udy, conduc ted by a h ig h ly-r e s p e c t e d f or me r s t a t e economist, on the economic i mpact a nd benef it t hat M a i n e’s C r e d it Un ion s provide to consumers found that, despite the significant economic challenges and rate env ironment, Maine consumers saved nearly $38 million by using a Maine credit union in 2011.

The study titled, “The Eco-nomic Impact on the Maine Economy and the Financial Benefits to Maine Consumers of the State’s Credit Unions,” was conducted by Chuck Lawton, Ph.D, of Planning

Tips and tricks for Young & Free MainersBy Kylie KeeneYoung & Free Spokester

Maine’s Young & Free spokester, Kylie Keene, shares money-saving advice for Maine’s 18-25 crowd

I was lucky to land a job as the Young & Free Maine Spokester just a month after graduating from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in journalism. My new role as spokester mea nt I wou ld represent the 18 to 25 crowd for Maine’s credit unions and provide useful and interesting i n for mat ion to my peers

on the important topic of personal finance.

D u r i n g m y f i r s t m ont h on the job, I learned a few t h i n g s a b o u t p e r s o n a l f inance myself, including

t he importa nce of sav ing money. Sav ing money has undoubtedly been the most difficult financial challenge I’ve faced in my years as a member of the workforce. I convinced myself that I was never making enough money to put a ny t h i ng away i n savings. I worked part-time and full-time jobs since I was of legal working age, but the hourly pay was inconsistent and tips from waiting tables depende d on how ma ny people wanted to eat Thai food that night.

Now that I’m post-grad with a full-time job and steady pay-check, it should be easier to build my savings, right? This was not the case. After my first few paychecks I found myself spending the extra money instead of saving it. I bought a few more groceries, added new outfits to my wardrobe, and purchased concert tickets to fill my weekends. And then reality struck. An e-mail ar-rived in my inbox reminding me that in a few short months my student loans would go in-to repayment. I looked outside at the Young & Free vehicle, re-alizing it was only mine for the

year and then I would have to purchase my own car. At the same time, my lease would ex-pire, and what were my plans for housing? Rent again or buy a house?

It was suddenly

clear to me that

saving money

should be my

first financial

priority.

It’s comforting to tell yourself t hat you’re going to start saving money, but you must take action. It doesn’t happen by itself. Just keep these things in mind and saving money will be easy.

Saving money is not an option.

Everyone needs savings. You never know when you’ll need the money for an emergency or a major purchase. Incorpo-rate saving money into your everyday routine.

You can save money without thinking about it.

Ask your credit union what options are available for auto-matic deposits and transfers. I set up a weekly transfer online from my checking to my sav-ings, so the same amount is de-posited every week. I’m saving a portion of my paycheck every week without any extra effort.

Saving money does not have to cut into your fun.

Create a budget and figure out how much you can afford to save. Factor in things like bills, food and fun money. You can have fun while saving money, just create a budget and stick to it. I’m looking forward to the year ahead as I share more of these learning experiences with the 25-and-under crowd. I hope my advice will help bu i ld a more f i na ncia l ly responsible a nd prepa red generation.

Maine credit unions are at the head of the class for financial literacy efforts. From volun-teering and teaching financial literacy in local schools and operating in-school branches to participating in one of the Youth Financial Fitness Fairs coordinated by Maine’s credit union and Maine Credit Union Youth Week, the Maine Credit Union League and Maine’s credit unions continue to edu-cate consumers of all ages.

Additionally, to help Maine teachers bring financial educa-tion into their classrooms, the Maine Credit Union League have introduced a partnership with FoolProof, a turnkey, web-driven financial literacy pro-gram. With a number of credit unions already offering the program to students and mem-bers, it is one more way that Maine credit unions are work-ing to prepare Maine’s youth for a successful financial future!

Maine Credit Unions are also a valuable resource for helping adults with money manage-ment and financial planning. From providing tools to help members better manage their money, to hosting seminars on subjects such as decreasing debt or buying a home, Maine credit unions help Maine peo-ple of all ages achieve a secure

financial future. For these lead-ership efforts, the Maine Cred-it Union League and Maine’s credit unions were recently presented with a national Des-jardins Youth Financial Edu-cation Award from the Credit Union National Association.

The prestigious award recog-nized the League and Maine’s

credit unions “for consistently striving to expand financial education learning opportuni-ties to reach new audiences and help more students understand money management and per-sonal finance.”

Founded in 2004, Maine credit unions introduced a new con-cept in youth financial educa-

tion through Financial Fitness – A Money Management Expe-rience. This award-winning, half-day event targets high school juniors and seniors and is similar to the game of “LIFE,” where participating students are given a career and monthly income and then have to visit booths associated with various

expenses that the average adult is faced with each month. For more information about the ef-forts of Maine’s credit unions towards both youth and adult financial literacy, visit www.mainecul.org and click on the Financial Education and Re-sources link in the “Commu-nity Involvement” section.

Decisions. Lawton said that the total savings that credit unions provided to consum-ers were particularly impres-sive “in light of the enormous changes and circumstances that have taken place in the financial services sector and the economy since the finan-cial crisis began in 2008.”

Maine Credit Union League President John Murphy said that the great efforts made to offer such savings in a challenging economy make credit unions an increasingly valuable option for Maine people. “The credit union philosophy of putting the interests of members f irst continues to highlight the difference between credit unions and other financial institutions. Credit unions are ow ned and governed by their members, so a l l members benefit from better rates and lower and fewer fees. That is a key and distinct difference of credit unions. As we saw in 2011’s Bank Transfer Day, now more than ever, consumers recognize and appreciate the value of using a credit union,” he said.

More branches than any single bank in Maine = more convenience for youFor eight years, Shared Branching has allowed many Maine credit union members to enjoy the convenience of using other Maine credit unions, as well as credit unions across the coun-try and even the world, just as if they were their own credit union. And now, with 155 locations throughout Maine, there are more Shared Branches than any single bank in Maine! There are also more than 4,600 branch locations across the na-tion – that’s the fourth largest branch network in the country!

Shared Branching allows members of participating credit unions to access thousands of credit union service center locations via the cooperative network of service centers in the United States and overseas. Most member services are offered at Shared Branching locations across the country including: account deposits; cash and check withdrawals; transfers between accounts; cash advances, loan payments, and balance inquiries. Extended service hours with weekend hours are even offered at some locations, while money orders, traveler’s checks or official checks can also be purchased at various Shared Branches.

“Shared Branching provides more locations to conduct finan-cial transactions than any other financial institution in Maine, and still enables members to receive the exceptional credit union service that Maine’s Credit Unions are known for. From Madawaska to York, credit union members can find a Shared Branch location when they travel throughout the state, or even when they head out of state for work, vacation or to attend col-lege. Shared Branching means that a great number of Maine’s

620,000 credit union members can use their credit union across town, across state and across the country,” explained John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League.

Shared Branching services include the CU Service Centers Call Center, a service that is available to CU members 24/7! To access the Call Center, members call a toll-free number, 1-888-837-6500, which can be found on the homepage of www.cuservicecenters.com. Members need only to provide their name, credit union name, state, and specific authentication information, to receive the high level of service provided by Shared Branching! Credit Union Service Center locations can also be found using the iPhone App, “Find Branch!” Members can find the nearest location, as well as credit union hours, directions and a phone number. In addition, a number of SURF ATM locations give thousands of Maine credit union members the ability to not only access cash but to a lso ma ke deposits, surcharge-free.

Formed in 1999, 90 percent of Maine’s Credit Unions now participate in the SURF ATM Network through the Maine Credit Union League. “This is what credit unions are all about - cooperating with each other for the good of all credit union member s,” ex pla i ned Joh n Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League.

It's another new record for Maine credit unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger2011 marked yet another record-setting year for the Maine credit unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. The year’s total funds raised was $446,929.56, an increase of nearly $45,000 over 2010’s record. This impressive total was announced in February in a special ceremony featuring the award-winning author of On Golden Pond, Ernest Thompson.

“Maine people deserve an Academy Award for their generosity. As someone who has fond affection for this state, I am touched by the level of support and effort credit unions and members devote to this cause. It is amazing,” Thompson said. Since 1990, Maine’s credit unions have raised over $4.3 million to help end hunger in Maine. 100% of all funds raised stay in Maine, and go directly to the cause, benefiting the very communities in which the funds are raised.

Each June, the Campaign holds a ‘Share the Bread’ event, when along with loaves of bread, Maine credit unions contribute $17,000, one of the largest single-day contributions to multiple hunger organizations in Maine, to organizations in every county in the state. Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League, said that more than donating much needed funds, events like this are also about raising awareness for this critical need. “As we recognize the significance of hunger in Maine and, most specifically, feeding a number of Maine’s children during summer vacation when there are not meals provided at school, Maine’s Credit Unions will provide resources to help organizations in each county make a positive impact on thousands of people in Maine.”

To ensure that even the most rural Maine towns receive the food they need, the Campaign partnered with Good Shepherd Food Bank in 2005 to introduce the state’s only Food Mobile, Since its inception, the Food Mobile program has distributed 2,280,743 pounds of food throughout the state. The Food Mobile continues to be an invaluable resource to Maine’s food pantries, not only because of the rise of gas and oil prices, but throughout the winter months when the truck is able to travel to remote food pantries that may have trouble sending someone

to pick up food. The Food Mobile celebrates its seventh anniversary this year.

Again this year, these efforts have been supported by a unique fundraiser, as credit unions, as well as retailers throughout the state have been selling The Amazing Music of Mainers - Volume 1. With proceeds benefiting Ending Hunger, this 27-song 2-CD set features a wide variety of artists, all with ties to Maine. This is a piece of Maine history and features such musicians as: Don McLean, Dan Fogelberg, Rustic Overtones, Schooner Fare, Bill Chinnock, Cindy Bullens, Devonsquare, Noel Paul Stookey and many more, including The Maine Stein song with a digitally remastered version by the legendary Rudy Vallee. It also interjects Maine humor at its best, with short cuts by comedian Tim Sample and the late Marshall Dodge.

The CDs are available at Maine credit union locations across the state, Best Buy, Bull Moose Music, Mr. Paperback and other select retail locations. You can also order them online at www.mainecul.org.

For more information on how you can help Maine’s Credit Unions end hunger, visit www.mainecul.org and click on the Ending Hunger l ink under “Community Involvement.”

Maine consumers flee high fees and join a credit unionCredit union members have long appreciated the lower fees that are just one of the many perks of credit union membership – a savings that totaled $10.5 million for Maine CU mem-bers in 2011, according to a recent survey.

This is a “secret” that is officially out, thanks to the publicity generated by the Bank Transfer Day movement, which was sparked following Bank of America’s announcement of new fees.

In a survey of Maine cred-it unions, conducted by the Maine Credit Union League in the aftermath of ‘Bank Transfer Day’ when Bank of America an-nounced its now-rescinded monthly fee on debit cards, most Maine credit unions re-ported growth in new members, additional deposits and significant increase in web vis-itors and inquiries from consumers seeking information about joining a credit union.

With close to two-thirds of Maine credit unions responding, the survey found nearly

85 percent had experienced growth in new member accounts above normal levels during that month. More than half of respondents reported double-digit growth, ranging from 12-55 percent.

“Every day is a good day to join a credit union,” Maine Credit Union League President John

Murphy said. “More and more consumers are rec-ognizing the value and benefits of using a credit union, especially when compared with other fi-

nancial institutions.

“With fewer and lower fees and better rates on savings and loans, Maine’s Credit Unions are a great deal, and with a significant increase in awareness of the positive advantages of using a credit union, Maine credit unions are stronger and more valuable for Mainers now than ever.”

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 the International Year of Cooperatives! As the largest cooperative in the state, Maine’s Credit Unions have been happy to get in on the action!

Ma i ne c re d it u n ion s were a n ac t ive participant of July’s ‘Celebrate Portland Fest iva l,’ a n event t hat celebrated t he value and important role of credit unions as cooperatives. It was held on Saturday, July 7, which was officially International Cooperative Day.

The event marked the conclusion of the Cabot Community Tour, an event that included bicyclists riding from Miami to Portland with stops in communities along the east coast. The Tour’s primary purpose was to promote community and cooperatives and, as Maine’s largest group of cooperatives, Maine’s credit unions were prominently featured in the Portland event, which marked the conclusion of the Tour.

The Tour’s conclusion was designed to coincide with International Cooperative Day, and was featured as the day’s “largest celebration of co-ops around the country.”

Held at Payson Park in Portland, Maine’s credit unions had a strong presence includ-ing a tent featuring Young & Free Maine Spokester, Kylie Keene, connecting with the

25-and-under crowd and several other credit unions participating.

“The event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strength of credit unions and the cooperative spirit that makes Maine such a strong cooperative state,” remarked John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League.

When you open a checking account at most Maine credit unions, there is one thing you can check off your list – fees! That’s because 95 percent of Maine’s credit unions offer free checking accounts, and 90 percent of-fer free checking accounts with no mini-mum balance!

This one feature can make a big difference to Maine consumers, especially when striving

save money. Knowing your money is safe, and that every cent you put in your account will stay where it should be, is just another benefit of being a Maine credit union member. And, when paired with better rates on loans, and lower or no fees on other services, it all adds up to significant savings for members!

Call a Maine credit union today, and ask about their checking account fees. Chances are, you’ll be told a number that you’ll be happy to hear – zero! Visit www.mainecreditunions.org to find a credit union near you!

No fee checking

Maine credit unions have money to lend for all seasons and reasonsDespite an economy that has prompted many lenders to pull back, lending is accessible and strong at Maine’s credit unions. While institutions across the country were tightening lending avail-ability, Maine’s credit unions continued to lend money and were sources of credit to thousands of Maine consumers, with loans outstanding to members exceeding $3.67 billion.

Maine credit unions go beyond lending basics to provide smaller loans to help with unexpected life events or emergencies, or just to help a member though a rough patch. Credit unions are known for providing members with smaller loans to help them get back on their feet!

More than the ability to get a loan at a trusted fi-nancial institution, choosing a Maine credit union for your loan is a decision that will usually save you money! The most recent study on the “The

Economic Impact on the Maine Economy and the Financial Benefits to Maine Consumers of the State’s Credit Unions,” found that consumers provided a breakdown that detailed the financial benefits of credit union membership in Maine saved $21.4 million from lower rates on loans!

“Maine credit unions continue to experience con-sistent growth, which has a positive economic im-pact on the lives of members and communities. We are also extremely pleased to see that more consumers continue to turn to credit unions for financial services through new relationships or expanding existing relationships,” stated League President John Murphy.

No matter what you need, Maine credit unions are here to help. Visit www.mainecreditunions.org to find a credit union and begin the lending process today!

Financial security matters at Maine credit unionsWith financial institutions making headlines in recent years for their struggles as our country and state work to rebuild after difficult economic times, many consumers may wonder who they can trust with their hard earned money. This is something that members of Maine’s credit unions already know the answer to – their money is safe at the financial institution they own – their credit union!

Maine credit unions offer something that no oth-er financial institution can – the opportunity to be an owner of your institution, and a board that includes unpaid volunteers who are democrati-cally elected by the credit union’s members. These volunteers work with credit union management to conduct credit union operations in a safe and sound manner that is singularly focused on serv-ing the members. “Maine credit unions are owned by their members. This means that each credit union is dedicated to serving the community and the people who live there.” explained John Mur-

phy, president of the Maine Credit Union League.

The National Credit Union Administration, or NCUA, is the federal government agency that charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA also operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), similar to the FDIC which insures banks. Mem-ber savings in Maine credit unions are insured by the NCUSIF, which is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government.

Member deposits in federal credit unions are in-sured to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund and backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government. These accounts include regular shares, share drafts (or checking accounts), money market accounts, and share certificates. Individuals with account bal-ances totaling $250,000 or less at the same insured credit union have full NCUSIF coverage. Not one penny of insured savings has ever been lost by a member of a federally insured credit union.
