Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design is one of the world’s premier art colleges and has around 4,500 full-time students and 12,500 short course students on three sites in the heart of London. Its aim is to equip students with an art and design education that will allow them to meet the challenges of the creative industries now and in the future. Central Saint Martins is one of the six constituent colleges of the University of the Arts London, Europe’s largest art and design educational institution.

Preparation courses take place in the same studios and workshops as the full-time courses. You will also have access to the Central Saint Martins and University of the Arts London specialist libraries and student facilities.

These Portfolio Preparation courses will support your application to college for further studies, whether at Central Saint Martins or elsewhere. We have a very high success rate of portfolio-course students entering their first choice college, and so you can be sure that your time, dedication and enthusiasm will be well rewarded. Your tutors will give you expert advice about the application and interview process and help you develop your work into a successful portfolio that will stand out from others.

OrientatiOn tO art and design

The Orientation to Art and Design has been carefully created to help students with little or no art and design education to bridge the gap between their current skill level and the experience and knowledge required to gain access to the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (or other equivalent course). The aim of this course is to help students build a portfolio of work that will enable them to apply to art colleges within the UK and beyond.

English LanguageThe Orientation to art and design course is designed to support and develop student language skills with a focus on research methodologies. The English language tuition is provided by visiting staff from the UAL Language Centre with emphasis on speaking and listening skills within the context of English used in the art college environment. A short research based project enables students to show evidence of their language and research developments in their completed portfolios.

Curriculum of this course includes lessons on:• Basic drawing and observational skills• Research skills• Idea generation projects

and worksheets• Life drawing• 3D construction projects• Painting and colour theory• Process led projects• Design for communication projects• Photography • Design for the body• Presentation skills

The Orientation to Art and Design is a nineweek fulltime course that combines studio and workshop practice to develop students’ knowledge and skills for entry on to a Foundation Level course. This includes observational, analytical and research skills, the control of materials and processes in the realisation of ideas, the capacity to evaluate your work and the work of others and to establish communication skills with particular reference to studio language. The course also includes visits to galleries and museums on research projects. Once the students have completed all their projects, the final part of the course will involve selecting, mounting and presenting a portfolio in preparation for interview. Students will be expected to provide their own materials for drawing; all specialist materials will be provided.

This course will provide students with an introduction to the concepts and practices of thinking and designing in three dimensions. Though this is an Architecture portfolio course, students will address the spatial qualities of interior and exterior spaces and the user requirements of these different environments, both of which are the key skills for any architecture, spatial or interior design undergraduate programme.

Entry Requirements 18+ years old and IELTS 6.0 or equivalant. For students planning on applying to BA Architecture – you will need GCSE Maths + Science, grade C or above AND A-level grades ABB or above. Course Structure The Architecture Portfolio course enables students to construct a portfolio of work that can be used to make an application for study on an undergraduate architecture or related spatial or interior design programme.

Through a series of briefs, workshops, lec-tures and visits students will develop their research, design and communication skills to develop proposals for architectural and spatial outcomes. This course will ask students to explore the historical and ideological context for the built environment as they begin to consider the use of technology and materials in its fabrication.

By the end of the course students will have developed new practical and conceptual skills that will allow them to create a portfolio that expresses their own creative approach within the conventions of architectural and spatial communication.

The course aims to serve the needs and ambitions of two main student groups:• Those seeking to build a portfolio for

application to BA Architecture or related course based on designing in three dimensions

• Professionals seeking to renew their creativity through personal projects, new processes and produce a fresh portfolio.

The Architecture Design Portfolio Course is a full-time course providing two days tuition per week across three ten-week terms. Each term is a separate course that is taught on a progressive basis, providing the opportunity to study for up to one academic year. It is possible for students to join this Architecture Portfolio on course 2 or 3 but to do so you will have to show that you have reached the appropriate skill level and that your portfolio already contains a significant amount of well-developed work. Most students need between 6 months and one year to build up a complete portfolio.

The objective of this highly intensive fashion programme is for students to produce their ‘best’ portfolio of work possible in order to gain a place on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree course at Central Saint Martins or elsewhere. You will be given advice about future studies and follow projects that will create a portfolio that represents your own personal approach to fashion and communication. You will push your understanding of fashion and challenge your preconceived ideas of how to design garments by putting making, experimention, research and unique presentation skills at the heart of everything you do. You will be expected to work hard, find inspiration in new and unexpected places and identify your strengths whilst learning to overcome your limitations.

The objective of the Graphic Design Portfolio Course is to provide students with a solid foundation in graphic design or to develop established skills. It is expected that the majority of students will use the course to apply to HND, BA or MA courses by building an original and effective graphic design portfolio. This is not a computer software course but rather reflects the studio-based and idea generation nature of graphic design. It is highly international and is sympathetic to the needs of international students.

The course aims to serve the needs and ambitions of two main student groups:• Those seeking to build a portfolio for

application to a BA Graphic Design, MA Communication Design or similar

• Professionals seeking to renew their creativity through personal projects, new processes and produce a fresh portfolio with a creative London edge

The course assists you in realising your goals through common creative exercises, lectures, workshops, demonstrations, visits and individual tuition. It will make full use of the cultural aspects of London and there may be the opportunity to get involved in ‘live’ briefs from industry (which will give you a further taste of the BA and MA courses at Central Saint Martins).

StructureThe courses are taught on a progressive basis and students are encouraged to come into college on days outside their taught classes to use the available facilities and attend relevant lectures organised by the BA Graphics and MA Communication Design programmes.

Stage 1, April – June: The focus of this term is on building up key skills and introducing you to creative London.

Stage 2, Oct – Dec: This term is designed to develop a unique style of work as well as the skills required for independent study.

Stage 3, Jan – March: The final term is inten ded to perfect your growing portfolio for application to your chosen course or job. Independent study is required. The course leads up to the application deadlines for BA and MA courses for admission the follow ing September. This means that if you join the course in April you would be preparing a portfolio for application to a course starting in September the following year. Your portfolio is seen by the Course Director for the course you are applying to at CSM and any offers of places are made on the day of your review.

It is possible for students to join from course 2 onwards, less so course 3, but to do so you will have to demonstrate that you have reached the appropriate skill level and that your portfolio contains a significant amount of work appropriate to the proposed start-ing point. We find most (though not all) suc-cessful applicants to BA and MA take around 6 months to build up a winning port-folio. Professionals will benefit from any term.

The course assists you in realising your goals through common assignments, lectures, workshops, demonstrations, visits, peer group and individual tuition.

StructurePhotography Professional Practice and Academic Portfolio Course is an intensive part-time course providing one days tuition per week. You are expected to work on your projects outside class time and allow 15 hours a week for this work. These courses are taught on a progressive basis, providing the opportunity to study for up to 30 weeks. You are recommended to take both stages, however it is possible for students to join the course at Stage 2, but to do so you will have to show you have reached the appropriate skill level and that your portfolio already contains a significant amount of developed work.

Stage 1: If you are accepted on to this first course starting in February, (like the majority of applicants), then you will complete a full academic year of study, ending in January 2013. The first stage of the year-long pro-gramme is taught progressively with practical and technical skills being covered between February and June as you start to produce work for your final portfolio. These skills will then be applied to the projects that will form the bulk of your portfolio in the second part of the programme.

Stage 2: The skills formed in Stage 1 will be integral to developing the projects that will form the bulk of the portfolio you create in Stage 2 of the programme between October and January. This will give you the strongest position from which to apply to apply for the BA and MA courses.

The aim of this course is for students to generate a good portfolio of work in order to secure a place on an undergraduate textiles degree course at Central Saint Martins or elsewhere. The pedagogy that underpins this course is based on that of HE learning and teaching methods at CSM. Although this is primarily a Textiles programme you will be taken through a more diag-nostic route from the beginning of the course. This will help to define your portfolio for your HE course of choice or help enhance transferable skills for your own practice if you are a freelance designer.

Aims of the course The main aim of the programme is to get each student working in an independent and individual way though a variety of workshops and tutorials. You will work with a number of professional practitioners from jewellery design and fashion and textiles including printers, weavers and knitters as well as theatre designers, fine artists, and colourists.

StructureStage 1, April – July: Introduces you to the three principal areas of print, weave and knit, and to areas of visual research. You’ll progress from introductory design workshops to structured projects develop-ing your research, drawing, colour, design and technical skills in textile specialisms. You’ll also explore digital and non-traditional approaches to design, structure and surface.

Stage 2, September – December: During this stage you’ll do further research and begin to develop ideas .Your substan-tial research will help you to apply all the knowledge and skills you gained in the first term and to meet the challenges of turning your ideas into final outcomes. Aims and learning outcomes involve extending your professional and contextual knowledge of textile design for fashion, accessories, interior, exterior and product applications while continuing to develop your design experience and identity.

Stage 3, January – March: Allows you to target strengths and weakness before embarking on your final major project. You’ll start developing your personal interests, focusing on designing textiles and surfaces for fashion, accessories, interior, exterior or product contexts. The course’s project-based structure is enhanced increasingly by a more self-directed progress towards the realisation of your final major project with the support and guidance of the course tutors you’ll develop your final portfolio.

Each stage is a separate course that is taught on a progressive basis, providing the opportunity to study for up to one academic year. Summer SchoolFor July to September we offer a range of 1, 2 and 3 week full-time, weekday courses and a selection of 4-week intensive evening courses for 18s and over and specialist courses for 16 to 18 year olds.

Residential Courses for Under 18sTo meet the needs of our younger audience Central Saint Martins has created a range of short, residential courses. The aim is to give students aged 13–17 years old an experience of art school in order to build skills and develop new work for their port-folio. Using the talents of our Foundation and short course tutors, these courses are either two or three weeks long and involve practical designing and making.

Some facts about Short Courses at Central Saint Martins:• Class sizes are limited to allow as much

interaction between you, your tutor and your fellow students as possible.

• We monitor our performance by reviewing feedback from previous students so that we can create the best courses.

• All the profits generated by our short courses are returned to the college to support academic activities and the learning environment to the benefit of students and the wider community.

• Our courses are practical and involving, so expect to get out of a course exactly what you put in – your enthusiasm and willingness to ask questions will be well rewarded.

evening & weekend shOrt cOurses

Central Saint Martins has been offering short courses geared towards professional development and academic advancement since 1986.

We now run a huge range of term-time evening, daytime, Saturday, weekend and online courses in many subjects to help build your skill set. They range from two-and-a-half hours per evening over eight or ten weeks to Saturday courses over 5 weeks and 2-day weekend courses.

These courses can help you build a portfolio for applications for further study, improve your current skills or provide a fun opportunity to learn something new.

Page 18: CSM Full Time Portfolio Preparation 2013 14

Our large faculty of tutors is comprised of leaders in the field with a passion for providing quality education. Many are also currently teaching in the University of the Arts on degree programmes or are previous graduates.

Not everyone can commit time to the Portfolio Preparation courses, and some people prefer to test their ability and explore different disciplines before they make what can be a life changing decision. For others a portfolio is not the outcome they are looking for; they simply wish to take a course for personal interest or professional development. For these people we hope that this approach to offering short courses will meet the needs of everyone.

Short courses are open to all students and in most cases you do not need any previous experience.

Online Courses:Our online short courses were launched in 2011 and are growing fast with a unique interactive online class held at the same time and in the same buildings, with the same tutors as our regular evening classes. Through a place on an online course you can experience Central Saint Martins Short courses wherever you are in the world!

Weekend Courses:This year we’ve launched our newest courses – 2-day weekend courses. These courses cover a wide range of subjects and are perfect for busy students based both in and out of the UK. Come join us for a weekend and take advantage of these very short, but intense courses that provide the full Central Saint Martins experience.
