The Hop BittersManufacturing Co., which donated the trophy, had its headquarters in Rochester, NewYork and a branch office in Toronto. According to a company ad, it produced patentmedicine which cured neuralgia, "female trouble," kidney, liver and urinary complaints. AsaT. Soule, the company founder, claimed the elixir would cure “all diseases of the stomach, bowels, nervousness, sleeplessness, female complaints, and drunkenness.” The companydissolved in 1892, but its name lives on because of the trophy donated in 1880.

The trophy was probably donated by Muir Bros. Dry Dock which was located at the end ofthe Course where Rennie Park now is. In 1906, when the trophy was first presented, theback of the first grandstand abutted the dry dock, so it is probable that the Muir familydonated the trophy to the regatta they shared what was often called Muir's Pond with. Thetrophy came with the stipulation that if the winning sculler in 2 successive years was fromSt. Catharines or Port Dalhousie, “then the cup will become the permanent property of theclub to which the winners belong.” This suggests that the donor was from St. Catharines orPort Dalhousie. The Muir family owned the business from 1850 to 1946. The dry dockcontinued to operate into the 1960's. In 1970, the site was covered and made into a park.

Before this award was instituted, the Regatta Championship was determined by thenumber of points accumulated by clubs. That system favoured large clubs with manyentries. The emblem of the Regatta Championship, the Maple Leaf Trophy, was awardedbetween 1949 and 1979 to only 3 clubs: St. Catharines R.C. (22 times), West Side R.C. (6times) and Detroit B.C. (3 times). This award is based on efficiency. To qualify, a club mustcompete in at least 4 final events, must enter at least 14 competitors who row in theseraces and the club must contest at least 1 sweep oared event and 1 sculling event. Theefficiency percentage is determined by dividing the number of points actually accumulatedby clubs by the number of points they might have potentially achieved.

When Lisa and Kara Farquharson won the Junior Women's Pair for theSouth Niagara R.C. at the 2002 Henley, he was upset that there was no trophy for theevent, and so, after he passed away, his family decided that a fitting way to honour himand his dedication to them would be to donate a trophy for that event in his memory. The Wyandotte B.C. was established in 1875. The Club's first Canadian Henley win wasthe 1927 Senior Eight, and that may have been the spur for the J.B. Ford Co., a Wyandottechemical manufacturer, to donate a trophy in 1928. The story in the Standard of July 7,1928 is ambiguous and makes it appear that the trophy was not actually presented in1928: "The Wyandotte Club this morning announce the gift to the Association of a trophy tobe known as the Wyandotte Cup for a new competition at C.A.A.O. regattas—Junior 150-pound Eights. The offer will undoubtedly be accepted." The J.B. Ford Co. consolidatedwith Michigan Alkali In 1943, to become the Wyandotte Chemical Corp. which became partof the BASF Group of companies in 1969.
