§ Examples of CPS are cars that can drive without a driver or robots that operate a manufacturing line
§ Future CPS help solve key societal challenges, such as the ageing population and limited resources
§ Team of 14 partners from 6 countries
§ CPS action line was started in 2012 and focused on building a strong community
§ Target for 2013: first CPS service and application pilots and one start-up created
Summary Cyber-physical Systems
Introduction
What are Cyber Physical Systems?
§ The physical world merging with the virtual leading to an Internet of things, data and services
§ Embedded systems, using sensors, monitor and collect data from physical processes, like § steering of a vehicle § a production line § human health functions § energy consumption
§ The systems are networked making data globally available § Software applications can directly interact with events in the physical
world, e. g. in autonomous driving, intelligent manufacturing, or smart health and energy systems
Situation & Background
§ Embedded hardware and software systems crucially expand the functionality and competitiveness of vehicles, aircraft, medical equipment, production plants and household appliances.
§ Connecting these systems to a virtual environment of globally networked services and information systems opens completely new areas of innovation and novel business platforms.
§ Cyber Physical Systems have the potential of becoming a disruptive technology, are multi-disciplinary and transcend classical industry sectors
§ Future CPS will contribute to safety, efficiency, comfort and human health, and help solving key challenges of our society, such as the ageing population, limited resources, mobility, or the shift towards renewable energies.
Partners in the action line CPS
Key Objectives
§ To support transforming the governance of the complete life-cycle of cyber-physical systems into a science-based engineering discipline
§ To support the development of open and standardized architectures, ICT infrastructures, and pan-European platforms for open innovation and business incubation in CPS
§ To foster the transitioning of specific R&D results into solutions for CPS products and services
§ To create and implement education programmes to proliferate knowledge of cyber-physical systems in academia and industry.
Portfolio of Activities
§ Build-up of a strong CPS community of partners within EIT ICT Labs
§ CPS-specific extension of sensornet test-beds for the development, testing and evaluation of CPS applications
§ Expansion plans for 2013: § Methods and tools addressing the
engineering of complex CPS § Extension of test-bed support for CPS
applications § Demonstrator for water-cycle management § Reference architecture for medical CPS
applications § CPS summer school
Overview of activities
Results & Impact
§ Enhanced test-bed support for CPS application development in two large-scale test-beds provided by EIT ICT Labs partners.
§ Innovation platform to develop a standardised framework for cross-industrial and multi-disciplinary CPS engineering
§ Pilots and economic evaluation of CPS applications in the sensor networks and medical domains
§ Major educational contribution provided by the CPS summer school.
