Dance Bytes 2000 INTRODUCTION
It gives me great pleasure in my first year as Head of Dance to introduce you to the varied segments of Dance Bytes. We continue the tradition of previous years in presenting to you examples of the diversity of dance styles and choreographic practices which form the training for performance students at QUT Dance. From classical to cuttingedge, the students are exposed to a myriad of processes, not all of which we can encompass in this program of new work.
It is not only our students who benefit from this public season. Dance Bytes showcases new choreographies by QUT lecturers John Utans, Shaaron Boughen and Dianna Laska-Moore, each with their own distinctive stamp, and work by choreographer-in-residence Harold Collins.
This program also features four emerging choreographers whose work signals that there is a healthy future for dance. Peter Furness, well known to Queensland audiences as a former dancer with Dance North and Expressions Dance Company, has created a dynamic new work for Dance Bytes. In addition , there are new pieces by two graduating Master of Fine Arts students. Jaime Redfern, also well known to Brisbane audiences as a long serving member of Expressions Dance Company, has developed ideas he has been exploring in his MFA studies into a fine-tuned choreography. Sung-Yu Chen, from Taiwan , has created a video for her final project, which is being shown in the theatre foyer, as has Vanessa Mafe-Keane, a current MFA student and former dancer with Queensland Ballet who was performing and choreographing in Europe for several years, before her return to Australia . Please take time to enjoy these films prior to the performance and during interval, as well as the on-stage presentations.
John Utans' Tip of the Iceberg, although premiering this season, has been commissioned for World Dance 2000, an international dance festival to be held in Korea from July 26 - 30. Thanks to student fundraising and a generous grant from the Australia Korea Foundation seven students from QUT Dance will be travelling to the festival to perform this work.
I would like to thank lighting designer David Whitworth, costume designer Lara O'Gorrnan, production coordinator and rehearsal directors Sue Leclercq and Evan Jones, and all the dance and technical staff for their contributions to the Dance Bytes season . It is indeed a joy to work with such a skilled and harmonious creative team.
We trust that you will not only take pleasure in the eclectic 'bytes' of dance in this season, but that you will also take the opportunity to return and spend time in the newly developed Cultural Precinct of QUT at Garden's Point, including the recently opened Art Museum.

Collaboration has driven the development and creation process of Middle Distance. During this process I have asked the dancers to reveal experiences of their own personal histories which could then be placed within the work. The work explores inclusion, exclusion, and atmospheres of tension created in the space between people. I would like to acknowledge and thank the performers who generously shared their talents in the creation of Middle Distance.

This piece is the first movement of a longer 32 minute dramatic work. It is highly influenced by Anthony Tudor, one of the great dramatic choreographers of our time with whom I was privileged to work on several occasions in London. Someone one told me that if you are going to be influenced by any one to make sure that it was someone worthy -this is whatI have done here.His ability to tell narrative with the minimum of array was always an inspiration to me. Although this is only the first movement it sets the tone for the overall piece. We have not included a printed narrative; instead Iwould rather have the audience experience and draw on what they see.

"We all compete within our own goalposts. Some choose to stay inside them, and others function around them. Fright or flight? Which do you choose?"
Choreographer's Notes Competition. How do we compete with one another and how do we respond to competition being thrown at us? As men and women we respond differently to different challenges. Circumstances differ, from competing for space and possessions to competing for one's own self respect and identity under oppressive regimes. Sometimes we compete for a goal or position, only to find that in the end the reward is not such a coveted prize. Rather it is something we are not comfortable with or desire at all.
Observing how the students reacted to competition in the workshop processes helped me identify how culture influences our reaction to competition. This has informed the work and the subjects that we have looked at. From watching how we react personally to competitiveness, to how competition takes on an essence of survival, particularly for women in places like Somalia and Iran. This feminist outlook has been inspired by the tales of women who still suffer at the hands of a male dominated social structure. Global equality is about more than corporate wages.As always with a collaborative process, the input of the dancers as creators is valued and very much appreciated. This has been a wonderful journey to be involved in and I thank all for their input and assistance.

I was sitting in a wee nightclub at Glasgow. Music was playing. A wee bit LOUD. These two guys, one very still the other animated. One could be saying they were having a conversation but one guy was very still not saying a word . The other very animated. He could be have telling a wee story, or I always make the wee supper, or will yee listen to me, I love you, or try and chill will ya. Then he reeled backwards, through the crowd and landed up against the wall . Yeah man. REELED backwards. His hands in exasperation flung from his body. And he landed upon the floor. SWEET. I thought this is like a dance piece. I thought, somebody trying to communicate. Things keep getting in the way, there is the music and the steps and the time and the story ancgetting it together and the way you move and the way I love you . A wee bitricky. Then I passed out. SWEET.

I feel that my sense of culture is the ultimate result of my personal memories and history of my real life experiences. I have shared my own thoughts and ideas on this with the dancers and we then chose elements of bewilderment, seeking, remorse and hope to use in making the work. I wanted to work in the genre of video to further manipulate the work by making use of camera angles and special effects that would not be an option in live performance. I have also exhibited photos which are my own work. These are representations of my thoughts and sit alongside the emotional content of the film . The references to the photos are not graphic or realistic, simply impressionistic.

Lines of Site is a 20 minute video which shows the creative sensibilities between an artist and dancer. It features visual-artists Judith Wright, Jill Barker and Daniel Mate with dancer Markus Siegenthaler. The dialogues in the video acts as both documentation and process, portraying the distinct vocabularies of practitioners of different arts as they confront and breakdown their differences. This work is a continuation of the collaborative Jroup Co Mafe-Siegenthaler-Keane formed in 1992 to create and perform interdisciplinary projects. Lines of Site has been assisted by Arts Queensland.
Vanessa Mate, graduated from Stuttgart Ballet School in Germany and joined The Queensland Ballet directed by Harold Collins. In 1987, Vanessa joined Le Ballet du Grand Theatre in Geneva where she worked with major choreographers Oscar Araiz, Rudi van Dantzig, Jiri Kylian , Christopher Bruce, Ohad Naharin, Mats Ek, Robert North, Toer van Schayk and Vasco Wellenkamp.
Vanessa became freelance in 1991 working extensively with Vertical Danse Compagnie Noemi Lapzeson in all their productions and tours. In 1992, Vanessa formed part of the collaborative performance group Co Mafe-Siegenthaler-Keane. She is currently undertaking an MFA degree in Dance and visual-arts at QUT and has been selected to attend ANAT International Masterclasses at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Shaaron Boughen BA (Hons) Dance(London), MA Choreography, ( LSCD, Uni of Sussex, UK)
Performer, teacher and choreographer in the UK(1980- 85). Head ofDance, QUT (1991-2, 1993-5), Co-ord BA Dance QUT(1986- 95) Lecturer in Contemporary Dance, Composition , Alignment studies, Professional studies and Repertoire. Post graduatesupervisor. Independent artist, choreographing, performing and curating for The Cherry Herring, Brisbane's first collective of independent dance artists. Dance reviewer for The Australian and dance writer for Realtime. Received grants from The Australia Council , State Government and QUT for choreographic work. Choreographed over 30 works since returning to Australia. New work, BLEEDING-A-PARTcommissioned by the Brisbane Powerhouse to be performed in September, 2000. Has been an active participant in a large number of committees, boards and other working parties designed to establish and promote dance in Australia . These bodies have been drawn from both the Tertiary and Secondary Education sectors, the dance industry and its wider community and include Ausdance, The Australia Council Register of Peers, Academic Board, Faculty of the Arts, QUT, Board of Senior Secondary School Studies Queensland, Arts Training Queensland and The Cherry Herring Dance Collective.
Harold Collins MBE
Harold was one of the original dancers of the Queensland Ballet before joining The National Ballet of New Zealand where he was promoted to principal dancer in 1964. In 1968 he returned to the Queensland Ballet to dance Albrecht for Garth Welch's production of Giselle. He then travelled overseas to dance throughout England, Europe, United States an Japan working with some of the best companies, teachers and choregraphers including Sir Frederick Ashton, Rudi Van Dantzig, Sir Robert Helpman and Sir Kenneth McMillan. Harold also danced with the San Francisco Ballet and the London Festival Ballet. During this period, he performed a large number of specially created roles and partnered many famous ballerinas, including Dame Margot Fonteyn and Galina Samsova. In 1974, Harold returned to Brisbane taking up an invitation to become principal dancer with the Queensland Ballet. He was appointed the company's artistic director in 1978 and remained in this position for 19 years, creating many successful and popular works. In 1989 Harold was awarded an MBE for his services to dance and the community. Since leaving the Queensland Ballet, Harold has continued to work as a freelance artist and recently has accepted a commission for a new work from The Houston Ballet II , USA. Harold is currently choreographer-in-residence at QUT.
Peter Furness Peter graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1995 and has worked for Dance North and Expressions Dance Company. He is an experienced community dance teacher. Divining for the Adelaide Festival of Arts was his first performance with awarding winning, South Australian based Leigh Warren and Dancers. Peter has just finished a season of Chasing Space (May) with Leigh Warren and Dancers. Leigh Warren intends to tour both productions nationally in 2001 -2002.
Jaime Redfern After graduating from The Australian Ballet School in 1984. Jaime worked with the Australian Ballet for six years, working with some of the world's leading choreographers, including Glen Tetley and Maurice Bejart. In 1991 Jaime joined The Queensland Ballet where he worked for two and a half years . Jaime was then invited to join Expressions Dance Company in 1984.Since then he has toured throughout Australia , Germany, Papua New Guinea, India, Israel, the UK,
Singapore and Taiwan. Most recently Jaime has toured to Philadelphia and New York with Expressions for the Asia Pacific Contemporary Dance Festival. Jaime has also choreographed tour works for Expressions. These include Surf's Up!, One Foot Lifted Caught Stepping Forward, Song. Self. Fish. And In My Nature . Jaime was awarded an Asia Link grant in 1998 which enabled him to spend 6 weeks in Hong Kong in early 1999 teaching for the City Contemporary Dance Company, the Hong Kong Dance Company and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Jaime is presently completing a Master of Fine Arts (Dance) with QUT.
Dianna Laska-Moore ianna is one of Australia 's foremost folk and character dance
teachers. Her wealth of knowledge comes from a performance career beginning in Sydney and continuing in Europe with Folkloristisch Danstheater in Amsterdam. Dianna spent 10 years with this company both as a soloist and later as ballet mistress. As well as working with the company Dianna taught and choreographed for some of the major dance institutions in the Netherlands. While in Europe she attended many dance workshops, festivals and conferences where she collected folk material. Dianna is on the teaching staff of the Queensland Dance School of Excellence and the Queensland Ballet Professional Year as well as lecturing for QUT Dance. She is also the Artistic Director of the World Dance Company and is Australia 's representative for CIOFF (International Council of Organisation for Folkloric Festivals and Folk Art). Dianna is at present a recipient of an Australia Council Fellowship allowing her to explore the way in which folklore is being choreographed here and overseas.
John Utans John has performed with and choreographed for many of the leading dance and theatre companies throughout Australia including : The West Australian Ballet Company, Australian Contemporary Dance Company, Human Veins Dance Theatre, Splinters Performance Group, Danceworks, Australian Dance Theatre, The Queensland Theatre Company and Expressions Dance Company. He has taught contemporary dance and choreographed works for various tertiary dance institutions including the Victorian College of the Arts, Deakin University and the Queensland Universityof Technology. John has worked within independent performance projects with a such as Don Asker, Lynda I Jones and Nannette Hassall . He is an active member ofTh Cherry Herring , a Brisbane based collective of independent dance artists.
John was a participating choreographer in the 19981ntemational Course for Professional Choreographers and Composers, directed by Jonathan Burrows and Kevin Volans held in West Yorkshire, England. New Moves I New Territories John also participated as a choreographer in a 4 week choreographic lab and performance in Adelaide and Glasgow during March and April and this was funded by New Moves Festival, the Adelaide Festival of Arts, The Australia Council and QUT Academy of the Arts. Currently John is completing a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Visual Arts , investigating ideas surrounding performance and installation work. He is also a full-time Lecturer in Contemporary dance at Queensland University ofTechnology.
