Wow, I can’t believe that we are already in the month of
May. Time flies when you’re having fun and this school
year has flown by! Artist in the school, the highly ener-
getic musician, Mr. Mark, was demonstrating to our K-4
classes how one person’s junk is another person’s music.
He taught our students to make the transition from noise
to music by taking a pile of junk: garbage cans, buckets
and hoses and transforming it into an orchestra. We also
just finished our Meadows Speech Competition and will
share some excellent representation in the Division Wide
Oratorical Event on May 6, 2015. We are currently enjoy-
ing our exciting Milk Week activities which began on
April 27 with the Brandon Police Service competing with
the Brandon Fire Fighters for the annual Milk Week Tro-
phy. I can tell May is going to be another great month at
Meadows School!

Our very own Kailey T, Rylan
K, Carter L and Avery W
will be performing with the Brandon Middle Years Wind
Ensemble in two public concerts on Monday, May
4th; 12:00pm at Princess Park and at the Healthy Liv-
ing Center at BU at 1:30pm.
There are still too many parents parking or making
U-turns on the crosswalk, or stopping to drop off
kids in non-stopping zones.
This is becoming a huge safety concern,
as patrols/kids cannot see to cross.
Staff and by-law officers have been instructed to
report licence plate numbers of drivers ignoring the
warning signs.
Let’s work together for the safety of all.
Thank you.

Wood tick season is upon us! Here are some helpful tips:
Try using effective natural repellents. Squeeze an ample amount of sunscreen on your
hand and mix it with 10 drops of eucalyptus oil before applying it on your skin. Ticks dislike the smell of eucalyptus
oil, which makes it a potent repellent against them. Do a general body checkup after hiking or cutting bushes and grasses.
Make your home tick-free. To repel ticks away from your home, remove thick shrubs and small trees, piles of leaves
and tall grasses. Constantly mow your lawn, as ticks find it too hot to stay around short grasses. Keep your patios,
decks, and playground away from thick bushes or trees. Plants some flowers that deers dislike (such as ferns, tiger
lilies and morning glories) to repel them and the ticks they carry.

On April 8th, 2015 students and staff of Meadows School united in a sea of pink to take a stand against bullying. The
Day of Pink began after two high school students in Nova Scotia took a stand against bullying in their school. The
students asked all of their peers to wear pink to school after they heard a male classmate had been bullied for wearing
a pink t-shirt. To continue the momentum, The Canadian Red Cross Day of Pink campaign brings together schools and
communities throughout the province to wear the pink shirt and stand together against bullying.
Lead by the Youth Revolution, students at Meadows were
treated to pink donuts, had classroom presentations on safe
and respectful behavior, got their nails painted pink, and
were reminded to stay positive with positive messages on
sticky notes posted throughout the school. The grades 5-8
students enjoyed a presentation by musical performer FLO
who brought a message of hope and strength.
Thank you to all who participated in Day of Pink.

Artist in the School
At Meadows School we were very fortunate to have Mr.
Mark Cameron visit for 2 weeks this past month. Our K-4
classes spent time each day throughout the two weeks
exploring a whole new world of music and music creation.
Mr. Mark allowed students the opportunity to use his own
wildly creative instruments,
as they spent time with him
creating classroom composi-
tions! We then had the op-
portunity to enjoy the musi-
cal creations with a weekend
assembly. All our students
were extremely excited for
each session with Mr. Mark
and our school made a very
welcomed time for him. A
great time was had by all!
We would like to thank Par-
ent Council for their support with this project.

tive Choices, Managing Stress and Anxiety, Tobacco

Grade 7/8 Wellness Day
Well, it was another exciting Milk Week this year and a
big thank you goes out to the staff and students! We
had so many draws to enter this year and such great
enthusiasm. It is awesome to see everyone get so
involved. Of course, a big thank you goes out to the
Dairy Farmers of Manitoba for supplying such great milk
prizes.
We held our traditional milk relay races at the opening
assembly. Once again, the Brandon City Police and the
Brandon Firefighters were challenging themselves with
unique physical contests. It was a close competition but
the City Police came out as champions! They have taken
the trophy home to the police station and will return
next year to defend their title.
We hope everyone had a great Milk Week and we’ll see
you next year for Milk Week 2016!
- Ms. Arthur, Gr 1/2

Welcome to Kindergarten!
It’s that time of year again, when we begin welcoming
our new group of Kindergarten students to our school.
This year’s Welcome will take place
Tuesday, June 2nd from 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm
(inclusive). This evening event will include a variety of
play based learning centers, giving students and
parents the chance to experience a small part of our
Kindergarten program and meet some of the school’s
staff. If your child, or you know a child who, is enter-
ing Kindergarten at Meadows School in September
2015 please be sure to register them at the school and
check for your invitation in the mail. Hope to see you
there!

Websites to Check Out!
These websites are fun, educational and engaging. Check them out! See Mrs. Lander ([email protected]) if you
want to learn more about any of the information on the websites. Make sure you have a parent’s permission before
you look at these sites!
Kids for Health is an exciting project, based right here at Meadows School! The students in
5/6T have been learning all about the human body and how to keep it healthy. As they have
been learning, they have been creating a web site to document the learning process and share
the most important information with YOU so YOU can keep healthy too! The page is still under
construction but the students are getting closer to finishing it. Some of the highlights include:
The Human Body Systems with working models (and the planners
so your class could study the systems too!)
Nutrition information, including healthy snacks developed by the
students that are easy to make at home!
Quick 5 minute workout routines that you can do RIGHT IN YOUR
CLASS! Expect a visit from a 5/6T group of students soon to teach
you a routine!
Healthy routines to keep your body in tip top shape!
