BOUNTIFUL — Con-gressman Rob Bishop (R-Utah) is making his secondattempt at an energy conserva-tion bill, with the goal of ener-gy in dependence for the Unit-ed States.

Bishop said the countryshould not have to depend onforeign energy and needs tocontinue to develop energysolutions of its own. He toldBountiful Rotarians recentlythat energy needs to be con-stantly researched and devel-oped.

“There is no one source ofenergy that is going to keepyou happy and prepared in2030,”said Bishop.

In Washington and aroundthe country, Bishop said peoplehave forgotten about energydevelopment because gasprices have gone back down.“It went down because of theworldwide recession,” he said.“It’ll be back up close to whereit was by 2010.”

He also said that all sourcesof energy will be used in thefuture, and all sources shouldbe researched. The sources hetalked about included coal, oil, fossil fuels, wind, solar, electric, shale, natural gas, nuclear andhydro-electric. But, he also saidthere are groups out there whoare against each individualgroup.

“Every source of energyhas some group or individual

who doesn’t like it,” said Bish-op.

During a recent RotaryClub meeting, Bishop toldRotarians that he will keepnuclear energy under develop-ment.“It’s clean and should bepart of our portfolio,” he said.He stated that nuclear energywas self-sustaining and thereare ways to handle the wastefrom it.

As another part of the bill,Bishop wants to be able toreward innovation for individ-uals who help develop and usealternate sources of energy.“We need to reward people forconservation,”he said.

Bishop wants to increaseproduction of energy in ourown country. “We do not want

to be dependent on foreign oilwhen we have other options inour own country.”

Another of Bishop’s goalsin the bill is to keep optionsopen and look at all theoptions instead of just the onesthe administration wouldchose. “For every issue, therehas been another opportunity,”said Bishop about bills thathave recently passed.

For now, Bishop is alsofocusing on Opec and the waythey are limiting productionright now. “There is no reasonthis country should be heldhostage by Opec,” he said.

“I have a commitment toenergy development.”

DAVIS COUNTY — It’salways important to celebratebeauty when you see it.

As part of that effort, theannual Davis Beautificationand Garden Walk is gearing upfor its second year. The walk, which is sponsored by theDavis County Clipper, is cur-rently accepting nominationsfor the most beautiful homegardens in Davis County.

“After traveling the world, Ilove enjoying the beauty thatsurrounds us right in this area,”said North Salt Lake MayorShanna Schaefermeyer. “Anytime we do anything to add tothat, whether in communitygardens or in our own yards,we really do enhance what ishere.”

The registration deadlinefor the walk is May 8, with thewalk currently scheduled forMay 29-30. A team of judgeswill also be reviewing all of thenominations to determine thisyear’s winners, which will laterbe featured in a special sectionof the Clipper that will be pub-lished this summer. Special city-based judging committees mayalso look over the nomineesfor each city to determine their

own awards.“We all benefit when people

take pride in their yards,” saidWoods Cross City Mayor KentParry. “It creates a pleasantexperience for people, whetherthey’re on the walk or justenjoying their neighbors yards.”

Before any of this happens, however, people have to bringthese yards to our attention. The nomination forms, whichpeople can fill out for their ownhomes as well as their neigh-bors, are available at the sever-al Davis County city offices,

through city websites, and atthe Clipper offices.

The forms offer several spe-cific areas of nomination for aparticular yard — front, back, natural garden, trees andshrubs, and overall (more thanone category can be selected). The nominated homeownerscan also decide whether or notthey want their homes includedon the self-guided walk.

Anyone in Davis County iswelcome to nominate a yard, which they then return as soonas possible to the Clipper or

the city hall building in thesame city as the garden.

The Davis Beautificationand Garden Walk, which is cur-rently in its second year, isbeing modeled after the onethat has been active in WoodsCross for the last several years.

“We as a city appreciate theefforts of our citizens whenthey participate in either thecity or the Clipper gardenwalks,” said Parry. “It shows asense of community and char-acter.”
