Referring to your bathroom counter top as the “ottoman” calls to mind the bathrooms of our mothers in the 1960’s. It’s a relatively archaic, old school way of describing a place in your bathroom that inevitably ends up as the dumping ground for all of your lotions, potions, perfumes and makeup. It can be difficult to keep this space clear and free of clutter – no matter how good our best efforts, even the most beautifully decorated home has at least one ‘decorative’ that could use some sprucing up.

We suggest embracing your inner serving and consider using decorative trays as a way to keep all of your items beautifully stored away and organized. Ottoman trays come in a variety of styles, shapes and materials and can be used in a multitude of home décor applications. The first and most obvious use is to place it on a countertop in your bathroom and keep items like a tissue holder, perfume bottles or soap dispenser on it. A cohesive way to create a true designer look in your bathroom is to choose a matching bathroom set and then select a corresponding Serving tray to match. You’ll have an organized, hotel quality bathroom that will feel like a spa.

Another way to use traditional serving trays is to place them in a den or living room. Nothing looks more custom and elegant than draping a decorative throw blanket over an ottoman, placing a mirrored or shell tray on top. This idea is very European inspired and will add glam and sophistication to any space in your home. This idea also works in a sitting room or reading nook.

Try using a mirrored tray as the base for a cluster of picture frames. Doing this is a luxe way to show off your favorite photos and keep them organized and together. Try purchasing various size frames in different materials (including crystal, metal, and wood) to create a vignette that is thoughtful and does your photos justice. Also make sure to choose a tray that is large enough to comfortably hold the frames without crowding them. By placing the tray/frames display on a coffee table or credenza, you’ll have a great design element that will grab the eye.

Another great application for a tray is to use it in a child’s room. By selecting a fun and whimsical wood or monogrammed tray, you can have a place to keep your little ones items grouped together and organized. Use it for art supplies, frames, or anything else you can think of!

By using these suggestions, you will easily find ways to give your home a fresh, modern update using decorative trays. Becoming the designer of the home of your dreams is easy once you realize that true creativity is all about taking traditional design elements and using them in new, interesting ways. Happy designing!
