Dear Parents,
Welcome Back
We welcome everyone back for another great year at Kilberry Valley Primary School. I hope you had a wonderful
Christmas break and were able to relax with your family. We are certainly back into it and the students are off to a
wonderful start to the year. There is a tremendous feel around the school this year and I congratulate the staff for
their planning and preparation to ensure this has occurred.
We have commenced the year with 835 students, including many new students across all year levels.
We hope you have a great start to your time at Kilberry and have been made to feel very welcome already.
A special welcome to our new or returning staff:

We are looking forward to everyone quickly becoming an integral part of our school community. I am sure you
will make yourselves known to our new staff and welcome them into the Kilberry community.
It is always an exciting time when our Preps begin their time at school, and this year is no exception.
We have 116 very enthusiastic, bubbly students who have begun and settled in to school very well indeed. I am
sure they will also feel a part of the Kilberry community very quickly.
2016 Student Leaders
This coming Friday we will be conducting a whole school assembly commencing at 2.30pm to present our 2016
School Leaders their badges. This is always an exciting time for the students and we are thrilled that our 2015
School Captains, Teodora, Hristina, Cedric and Nilesh are available to hand over the responsibility to the new
school leaders. We will be presenting the School Captain, House Captain, House Vice Captain Marine and
Ambassador badges to the successful students.
This is always a tremendous time to publically recognise the student leaders for the new year and I hope you can
attend the assembly at 2.30 Friday 6th February.

School Uniform Expectations
It is tremendous to see the students have begun the school year so well by wearing their full uniform at all times. I remind you that students
should have their hats at school for term one and part of term two. The Uniform Policy also states no jewellery is to be worn apart from
watches or certain earrings (studs and sleepers only). If your child wears a turban or hijab, I would also ask you to ensure it is the colour of
the uniform – either maroon, light blue or white. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Student Accident Insurance
Each year I remind our school community that the Department of Education and Training does not cover the cost of student accidents.
However there are some companies who can offer you inexpensive student accident insurance if you wish to cover your children while they
are at school. Use the following address to the insurance company links on our school
website. http://www.kilberryps.vic.edu.au/page/106/Other-Publications
I also inform you that the Department of Education and Training does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has
no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.
Camps Sports and Excursion Fund
If you hold a current Health Care card you are eligible to apply for a $125 per student grant to be used for camps sports and excursions.
Take advantage of this and apply before the 29th February. Forms available online or at the office.

Bike/Scooter Smart Pledge
I remind you that all students from years 3 to 6 are able to ride their bikes or scooters to school but must complete a Bike/Scooter
Smart Pledge before commencing to do so. These can be collected from the office or Mrs Newport. This outlines the expectations
we require to ensure a safe passage to and from school for our students. No student in year Prep to 2 should be riding a bike or
scooter to school unless under strict parental supervision at all times. This is a safety factor with the high level of traffic in the area.
A huge concern also is the development of the students’ judgement and peripheral vision to safely negotiate the road issues they will
face each day.
Behaviour Management Plans
Very soon you will receive a student behaviour plan document that outlines the expectations of behaviour at Kilberry Valley
Primary School. We ask you to read this and have a discussion with your child outlining the various points contained. Then please
sign the sheet, have your child also sign the sheet and return it to your child’s classroom teacher.
Over this past week your children have been engaging in many discussions in their classes as to how they wish their group to
interact and the expectations they have of each other. It is always a wonderful time in the classrooms as the students discuss,
negotiate and outline their reasons for certain expectations of each other.
I hope they have come home and talked about this with you.
Car Parks – Staff Only!!
I remind you that the two car parks, in the school grounds with gates on Kilberry Boulevard and Warana Drive are for STAFF USE
ONLY. It is too dangerous to allow cars to be moving in and out during school time and at drop off and pick up times.
So please do not enter these areas at any time - for the safety of your children.
General Courtesy Obeying the Road Rules around the School Precinct
For your children’s safety I begin the year with a plea for your consideration and cooperation in ensuring you follow the road rules
and display courtesy at all times when parking or driving around the school. Pick Up and Drop Off times are very busy in any school
but as we have almost 600 families there will be a lot of traffic. I suggest you park a street or two away and have a stroll on a nice
day with your children.
When parking in the surrounding streets, it is imperative that you also follow the parking relations and rules. We must honour the
local residents with courtesy also. We have tremendous neighbours around the school so please do not park in their driveways, on
nature strips and ensure you obey the parking regulations in place. There are ‘No Standing’ signs in the area that must be obeyed.
I remind you that the drop off spots at the front of the school in Kilberry Boulevard have a ‘No Parking’ sign that means that you
cannot leave your car and come into the school ground. You must stay with your car for a maximum of 2 minutes.
Absence Notifications Reminder
If your child is absent from school, please ring the school office on 9702 8688 on the morning of the absence or send a note with the
student on the day they return to school. Thank you.
Book Packs
A HUGE thank you to everyone who has paid for the book packs and ensured a smooth start to the school year.
If you have not completed the payment yet please contact the office for details.
Year 6 Camp
Next week the Year 6 students will be attending their camp at The Briars, Mt Martha. This is always a great way to start their final
year at Kilberry as they have the opportunity to really get to know each other over the 4 days.
I look forward to spending a day with them next week.
Swimming Trials
We wish our budding swimmers all the best on Monday as we conduct the annual trials.
Have a great week and keep smiling!

please ring the school office
on 9702 8688 on the morning
of the absence or send a

CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR STUDENTS
We would like to remind parents to
provide a change of clothing in children’s school bags—preferably some clean underwear, track
suit pants, shorts or a dress.
This is handy for ALL children in ALL grade levels .
It makes them feel less stressed if they require a change of clothing owing to an accident or a blood nose. We ask for your
co-operation with this matter as our Sick Bay is unable to cope with the large volume of
people requiring changes of clothing.
THANK YOU
PARENT REMINDERS
LATE PASSES— If your child is late
to school they must sign in at the
office to receive a late pass to give
to their teacher.
EARLY LEAVERS— If you need to
collect your child before the end of
school, please do not go straight to
the classroom. They must be signed
out at the office, then you will be
given an Early Leavers pass to give
to the teacher
PARKING
No parking signs
If there is a 'no parking' sign, you can stop for 2 minutes in that area:
if you are picking up or dropping off passengers or goods you stay within 3 metres of your vehicle.
If you stop in, or partly in, an area showing a no parking sign and you are not picking up or dropping off passengers or goods, you are considered to be parked and can be fined. This is the case even if you stay with your vehicle.
