The Role of Diameter Signaling
• Diameter is a next-generation signaling protocol– Designed to be highly extensible– Incorporates Attribute Value Pairs (AVPs) supports a wide range of network specific data– Utilized on 60+ interfaces– Originally deployed using a peer-to-peer architecture

Diameter Signaling Controller (DSC) Value Proposition
• Relay: Relay agents can insert and remove routing information but don't make any other AVP changes.
• Proxy: In addition to relay, can modify message AVPs. Proxies maintain session state and are application-aware.
• Redirect: A redirect agent only provides information to a Diameter node, so that it can communicate with another Diameter node.
• Translation: Translation agents translate and interwork Diameter with other protocols, such as GSM MAP and RADIUS.

Control Plane Orchestration
• Why is control plane orchestration such a hot topic?– The industry continues to evolve to meet the requirements of IP services – The control plane is both session and application aware – NFV’s software intelligence model necessitates a new approach for DSCs– Phase 3 software enabled DSCs are strategically well positioned to enable orchestration
Sponsored by:
Control Plane Orchestration
• In a short period of time the role of the DSC has been extended from simply control plane management to enable control plane orchestration
• Control plane service orchestration is vital for delivery of virtualized services– Extends to more than just Diameter– Ability to manipulate signaling flows dynamically for virtualized and
non-virtualized services
