Digital Story Telling Project
An Element Story
Grade Level: 8th Grade Gifted, Advanced and Standard
Curriculum Area: Physical Science and Introductory Chemistry
Related State Standards:
SC.8.P.8.6 Recognize that elements are grouped in the periodic table according to similarities of their properties.
SC.912.P.8.4 Explore the scientific theory of atoms (also known as atomic theory) by describing the structure of
atoms in terms of protons, neutrons and electrons, and differentiate among these particles in terms of their mass,
electrical charges and locations within the atom.
SC.912.P.8.5 Relate properties of atoms and their position in the periodic table to the arrangement of their
electrons.
SC.8.P.8.4 Classify and compare substances on the basis of characteristic physical properties that can bedemonstrated or measured; for example, density, thermal or electrical conductivity, solubility, magnetic propertiemelting and boiling points, and know that these properties are independent of the amount of the sample.

Lesson Description
Students willbe creating a digital story to present an overview of an assigned element from the
periodic table. Students will begin by researching the history and background information for
their assigned element. They also must include interesting facts, references to the periodic tabl
data for their element and explain current and future uses of the element.
Students will be instructed to utilize Windows Movie Maker, however they will be allowed to use
alternative multi-media programs with my permission. Students must include appropriate audio,
graphics and transitions. Students also must adhere to copyright restrictions, a lesson which
students learned about during a previous multi-media class project.
Before creating the video, students must plan and organize their content for their video. This
plan must be approved prior to the creation of their video. Several planning templates are
available on the curriculum page. Students must limit their video to 2.5 to 3.5 minutes in length,excluding the Credits page. Students will use a teacher created curriculum page for assistance
with this project and adhere to the requirements in a criterion-based rubric.
Technology Integration
Internet: Students will be utilizing the internet to access the project Wikispace and to locate
appropriate audio and graphics to use in the video. Students will also use the internet to locate
information about their element and to research copyright information. Specific websites
recommended for student use are located on the curriculum page.
Windows Movie Maker: This is the multi-media program that students will utilize for creating an
editing their video. Students may also propose to utilize alternative video editors, such as Prezi
and iMovie.
Cameras and Camcorders: Students may utilize these and upload the audio and video into their
digital story.
