Foreword

The way a company expresses itself, its public‘tone of voice’, affects the attitude of our customerstowards us. The way in which information is given,is in many cases, crucial to its understanding oracceptance.

An important element in this expression is signage, which must project an image of efficiency, consistency and modernity. Signing of facilitieshas also to function on an operational level, moving customers through the system safely.

The detailed information in this standard representsthe culmination of thorough research, design anddevelopment. By careful and consistent applicationof this standard we will further enhance the imageof the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) networkin London.

1.1 Introduction

The basic elements of the Docklands Light Railwaysign system are the roundel, the house and linecolours and the New Johnston typeface.

The value of the roundel itself can hardly beoverestimated. It is one of the world’s best knownsymbols and carries a tremendous weight ofgoodwill. In order to preserve its value, the rulesin this section for its reproduction and applicationmust be strictly adhered to.

Colours are similarly important. Approved NCScolour references should always be used whenspecifying colours. The New Johnston typeface isrepresentative of the Transport for London ‘tone ofvoice’. Its friendly, yet authoritative appearance hasbeen a familiar and reassuring sight for decades.

1.2 Colour

The house colour for Docklands Light Railwaysigning is DLR turquoise, but there are othercolours, shown on this page, which are to beused when producing DLR signing.

NCS (Natural Colour System) references are givenfor all sign materials.

It should be noted that quality control is vital toensure accurate colour matching and that checksmust be carried out during manufacture and on

must be carried out during manufacture and ondelivery of signs. A4 size NCS colour swatchescan be purchased from:

1.3 Lettering

New Johnston Medium is Docklands LightRailway’s corporate typeface and is used for allsigning within the passenger environment, and fora wide range of publicity and other material.

It is highly legible and yet ‘friendly’ in tone.

Lettering must be shown in Corporate blue (NCS S3560-R80B) unless stated otherwise. It is to beupper and lower case, not capitals only, and initialcapitals are used only for the beginning of amessage or for proper names. The use of upperand lower case letters enhances readability whentext statements longer than one word are made.

Line spacing is based on the height of the lowercase letter ‘x’. One ‘x’ is the standard minimumbetween two lines of information.

When information in more than one size oflettering is used, the larger ‘x’ height should beused to separate the two lines of differing size. The smaller letter size is normally 70% of thelarger size.

Unless the function of the sign dictates otherwise, text is ranged left.

Where line spacing is used to split direction,a double line space is used between.

1.5 Arrows

This is the standard design of arrow for DocklandsLight Railway, and its proportions must not bealtered.

Arrows indicating direction to the left, straightahead or down should be placed left hand sideof the first line of the message.

Arrows indicating direction to the right should beplaced at the right hand side of the first line of themessage.

Sign messages should be ranged left to rightaccording to the direction indicated by the arrow.

Where one sign message is subsidiary to anotherand is in a smaller size of lettering, an arrow shouldonly be included with the main message.

The diagram and examples give the positionof the arrow relative to the message.

The size of the arrow is related to the capitalheight (CH) of the message as shown. Arrowsdirecting vertically up or down are centred onthe capital height.

1.6 Panel sizes

The panels of the sign system are based ona 50mm x 50mm grid.

The choice of panel depends on:

· Lettering size for optimum legibility.

· Length of message or messages to be contained.

· Architectural considerations, for example spaceavailable and/or surface decoration.

· Juxtaposition with other signs.

Some scaled down examples of panel sizes areshown on this page superimposed over the grid.

Panel sizes which do not conform to the 50 x50mm grid may only be used in exceptionalcircumstances, for example when incorporatedinto an architectural feature or printed ontowall-cladding panels.

1.7 Radius corners

Every sign panel which does not incorporatea structural frame should have a radius corner.

Radius corners on panels measuring less than625cm2 should be 4mm.

Panels measuring between 625cm2 and 1600cm2

have 8mm radius corners.

Panels measuring more than 1600cm2 have10mm radius corners.

1.8 Viewing distances

As a guide this chart shows the distance at whichcertain sizes of lettering can be read by a personwith normal eyesight.

The data obtained can be used to determinethe minimum letter size for any sign. Otherconsiderations, such as architectural features or

space restrictions may influence the final choiceof letter size, but the optimum size may be usedwherever possible.

Use of unnecessarily large letters must be avoided.

2.1 Introduction

Station identifiers, with their roundels, are the mainidentifiers of the DLR network. They are used toidentify a station from a distance, where it may notalways be obvious from street level where a stationis located, as well as at platform level where thoseleaving a train need to be reassured that they aredisembarking at the correct station.

Page 18: DLR Signs standard - Transport for Londoncontent.tfl.gov.uk/dlr-signs-standard.pdf · An important element in this expression is signage, which must project an image of efficiency,

2.2ContentsStation identifiers

2.2 Pole mounted identifiers

The primary identifier of a DLR station fromstreet level is the pole mounted sign. It shouldbe located in such a manner that the stationname is always clearly visible from the street.

2.3 Totems

The purpose of a totem is to identify clearly andconsistently the modes of transport available atan interchange.

It should be positioned in a location so as toensure that from all approaches to the stationthe modes of transport available are recognisablefrom a distance.

The logos from all other modes of transportsavailable around the station are to be includedon the totem along with the station name, whichis centred beneath the logos.

If the totem is on DLR property then it is theDLR roundel that is displayed first. All otherlogos should follow in order of customer usage.

For more detailed information on totemsand interchange signing, please refer to theTfL multi-modal interchange signs standardsfor London.

This is one version in a family of totems.

For more information please contactTfL Corporate Design (020 7941 4462).

2.3.1 Totems continued

There are three sizes of text for displaying stationnames on totems. The station name should neverextend beyond the width of the logos.

Note that each of the core networks hassubdivisions of its identity. For example, LondonBuses has over thirty bus operators and LondonUnderground has twelve separately named andcolour coded lines.

Operator and line identities are too numerous tobe displayed as primary identification or directionalsigns at a station without causing an excessiveproliferation of signs and confusion amongstpassengers.

The mode logo fulfils the function of identifyingthe network. It is only the mode logo that shouldever be displayed.

2.4 Fascias

When a station is equipped with a fascia or fascias,it is often part of a canopy structure which has adistinctive style of its own.

The standards here therefore do not give anyspecific measurements, but do specify therelationship between all the graphical elements.

Note that the station name is centred horizontallywithin the coloured strip.

The platform station identifier should be displayedat regular intervals on all platforms of a DLRstation. It is an important back-up system ofstation identification.

Platform station identifiers should be located insuch a manner that from any position from withinthe train itself, the station name is clearly apparent.

4.3 Way out from station signs

At all stations it is essential that during bothnormal operation and emergencies, customerscan always clearly see the location of thenearest exit (or emergency exit where present).

The ‘Way out’ indication differs from otherdirectional signs, in that lettering is yellow outof a black patch of fixed proportions.

The reasons for this difference are recognitionand visibility, and the fact that some way outsigns must be illuminated for safety reasons. The use of the patch introduces consistencyin the presentation of illuminated and non-illuminated ‘Way out’ indications.

When directing to an element of safety, suchas an alarm, safety signs may be combined withother directional messages. When doing so, ensurethat the safety message is always shown first.

The only exception to this rule is if a safetymessage is combined with a way out message. In such instances the way out message is tobe shown first.

5.4 Electronic signs

Electronic signs can provide customers withaccurate, real-time information about train arrivals, disruptions to services and advise on safety andemergency procedures.

It is therefore important that information ispresented in a clear, logical and consistent mannerto aid recognition, comprehension and credibility.

Tri-colour LEDs are used which allow messagesto be displayed in the appropriate colour for themessage type.

Safety information and emergency procedures arered, disruption and general information is green, tram arrival information is yellow.

Consistent use of these colours will helppassengers distinguish between different typesof information. For exterior displays, ultra brighttri-colour LEDs should be used. The standarddisplay lettering shown uses a character matrix10 dots high and 7 dots wide. However, a 9 x 5matrix may also be used for smaller boards.

The size of the lettering is determined by the sizeof LED and pitch (space between LEDs) used.

Messages appear in upper or lower case withall capital letters used for destinations andemphasis only.

Displays are made up of matrix blocks eightdots square. These are butted together to forma continuous matrix of the required size.

A minimum border equivalent to two display dotsmust be allowed within the display area. This maybe made up of unused active or additional inactiveLEDs, dependent on the number of active dotsused for display lines.

An additional row of dots must be allowedbetween each line of display for line spacing.Character spacing is proportional.

6.2 Sign levels

The consistent leveling of signs is central to theeffectiveness of any signing system. Failure toadhere to the principles shown on this page willseriously disrupt the carefully calculated levels ofsigning and impede communication of essentialinformation to passengers. It will also result in alack of harmony with architectural elements.

The guidelines have been established bearing inmind eye levels, viewing distance, architecture andthe importance of the message.
