The world’s population of billionaires increased 7% last year to reach a record high of 2,325 billionaires.
For example, the Walton heirs are among the richest families in the world, with a combined wealth of $152 billion.
The Walton wealth was inherited from Bud and Sam Walton, founders of Walmart. The Walton heirs own over 50% of the company.
Over 80% of all billionaires made the majority of their fortune themselves, even if they inherited a portion.
Starting your own company means your income will no longer be limited, you will use your time more effectively, and you will no longer need to beg for favours from people anymore. – Billionaire, Jack Ma
If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later! – Billionaire, Richard Branson
Among female billionaires, 21% are widowed, and many of them inherited their wealth from their husbands.
Women are more likely to have gained their fortune by inheritance: 65% of female billionaires inherited all or some of their wealth, compared with only 40% of male billionaires.
Men are more likely to have made their fortune on their own. 60% of male billionaires are self-made billionaires, but only 35% of female billionaires are self-made.
Female billionaires who inherited their wealth are generally wealthier than self-made female billionaires.
“Too many women limit their vision and opportunities by getting overwhelmed.” Women walk away from opportunities that they can’t manage themselves, instead of thinking, “Who can I get to help me so I can go out to sell the company?” – Nell Merlino, CEO of Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence
6.5% of billionaires are divorced. 3.1% of billionaires are single. 4.3% of billionaires are widowed.
When it comes time to settle down, find someone who wants an equal partner. Someone who thinks women should be smart, opinionated and ambitious. Someone who values fairness and expects or, even better, wants to do his share in the home. These men exist and, trust me, over time, nothing is sexier.” – Billionaire, Sheryl Sandberg
65% of billionaires have a university degree, and United States universities count the greatest number of billionaires as their alumni.
If you want to become a billionaire, a university degree is not necessary; and an advanced degree is probably a waste of time.
The founders of Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, and Facebook, all dropped out of school before becoming billionaires.
Newly-minted billionaire, Jack Ma of Alibaba Group failed twice before passing his college entrance exam.
Most engineering graduates, for example, are not engineers but entrepreneurs. The same goes for most law and politics graduates, who owe their fortunes not to practicing their professions but climbing the ranks of the financial services sector. – Times Higher Education UK
Billionaires move their homes and businesses to take advantage of the unique benefits that different locations can offer.
There are 10 locations in the world where billionaires concentrate in groups, with 100 times more billionaires per capita than the global average.
No. Location 1 - Liechtenstein 2 - Bermuda 3 - Luxembourg 4 - Hong Kong 5 - Switzerland 6 - Singapore 7 - United Arab Emirates 8 - Qatar 9 - Kuwait 10 - Norway
In these billionaire hubs, only half of the billionaires are “home-grown.” The other half are foreign-born.
In 5 of the top 10 territories, foreign-born billionaires make up all or the majority of the billionaire population.
The United States has the highest number of billionaires in the world, but it is growing at a much slower rate.
On average, billionaires have business or personal relationships with 9 other ultra-high net worth Individuals.
Ultra-high net worth individuals are not always billionaires, but they have a net worth of at least US$30 million.
You must take risks, both with your own money or with borrowed money. Risk taking is essential to business growth. – Billionaire, J. Paul Getty
You cannot just go to college and take a safe job working for someone else, hoping that you will eventually be promoted into the billionaire club after years of achievements.
You can be the best educated, most experienced person in the company, but to become a billionaire, you need to be a leader - not a worker.
Although there is no single path to becoming a billionaire, it pays to be a married male from a wealthy family with wealthy friends, educated in the U.S., with your own business related to investments or finance, and who thinks big, embraces risk, and is willing to relocate.
