1.- L’Estartit and the Medes islands
The Medes islands
The Medes archipelago, with seven islets and a surface area of about 23 hectares, is located
just a mile off the coast in front of L’Estartit beach. The Medes Islands are today one of the
most important marine flora and fauna reserves in the western Mediterranean, as well as being
a popular scuba diving destination. Twenty years of protection have brought about a spectacular
recovery of the wealth of the seabed, the marine environment and the islands themselves.
The diving paradise
The special ecological value of the seabed of the Medes is the result of two factors: the
proximity to the mouth of the River Ter, whose organic sediment feeds the marine fauna, and
the influence of the tides and north winds which are characteristic of the Gulf of Lions.
Consequently, we can find as many as 1,350 classifications of marine flora and fauna, an
ecosystem which has merited the classification of the finest reserve in the western
Mediterranean.
The different depths allow for all types of dives, for beginners and experts, who can observe
gorgonians, corals, starfish, octopuses, lobsters and many more at a depth of less than 10
meters. Spotlights make it possible to discover the posidonia meadow and the coral landscape
below 20 meters. You will see shoals of bream, predatory fish, and all kinds of crustaceans and
the king of the area, the grouper. And throughout the dive, a spectacle of life and colour.
Numerous caves and tunnels indicate that this archipelago, of limestone rock, belonged to the
massif over ten thousand years ago. Today the caves offer surprising dives for experts, both in
the islands themselves and along the coast: the caves of La Vaca, La Sardina, Dofí Nord, the
tunnel of La Pedrosa, etc.
International Festival Medes Image and Environment
Close to the islands lies the Reggio Messina, a ship that was intentionally sunk here in 1991,
the biggest ship visible by divers on the Costa Brava. The vessel Avenire sank off Cala Montgó in
1971; it is known as the “Marmoler”, the “marble ship”, because of the load of marble it still
carries in its holds. It is the only ship conserved in its entirety along this coast.
20 years of underwater images
This year, L’Estartit will have hosted 14 national and international photography competitions,
from the 2001 International Underwater Image Week to this summer’s MIMA 2014. The town
has hosted many such competitions, including the World Underwater Photography Championship
in September 2005, and has a long experience of celebrating the rich seabed surrounding the
Medes Islands. L’Estartit is proud to have one of the finest natural environments for underwater
photography, and to be able to share this space, which has been exceptionally well protected
and cared for since 1983. The town has made a big effort to make underwater photography
compatible with sustainable tourism development and strict respect for the environment.
L’Estartit hosts MIMA 2014
Parallel to L’Estartit´s notable history of underwater photography, we should bear in mind the
development of water sports and activities that have made this town a water tourism destination
par excellence.
L’Estartit has all the amenities and services needed for hosting this festival, which is attracting
increasing international attention year after year.
11 diving centres, about 700 moorings in L’Estartit Sailing Club, an accommodation reservation
centre, and L’Estartit-Medes Islands Water Sports Resort allow visitors to combine sports
competitions with a range of other activities for pleasurable holidays with a nautical theme.
