A. SYNOPSIS
I graduated in Joint Honours Botany and Zoology at the University of Bristol in 1981, and
then progressed to doctorate research at the University of Oxford (St John’s College),
investigating the ‘Ecology of Temperate Symbiotic Anthozoa’. In 1985 I moved to a NERC
funded postdoctoral position at Bangor University, School of Animal Biology, where I
investigated the ‘Behavioural Ecology of Shoaling Fish’ and specifically the ‘Twilight
Hypothesis’. In 1987, I transferred to the School of Ocean Sciences to take up a 5 year
Research Demonstratorship in Marine Biology. I was Course Director of the MSc in Marine
Environmental Protection for 22 years between 1989 and 2011. I developed research
interests in mapping coral reef biotopes, Environmental Impact Assessment, Marine
Protected Areas and Coastal Zone Management. I became a permanent member of staff in
1990, Lecturer in 1993 and appointed to Senior Lecturer in 2000
I am a Senior Lecturer in Marine Biology with expertise in temperate and tropical marine
environments and the interaction between human impacts and the marine environment. I
have over 25 years of experience in a wide range of projects involving coastal habitat survey,
Marine Protected Areas (MPA), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and Integrated
Coastal Zone (ICZM) in a wide range of countries and contexts. I have undertaken large scale
biological surveys for UNDP-GEF Projects on Sustainable use of Biodiversity of Socotra
Archipelago, and Coastal Ecosystems of the Andaman Islands, and EIAs for major industrial
developments (eg. LNG terminal, Oman; effluents, Mauritius). My research advances
techniques for integrating spatial biodiversity data in marine systems for the purpose of
assessment of state, for establishing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and for long-term
monitoring and investigating change. I am a field biologist, experienced in undertaking
manipulative experiments, survey and monitoring on coasts and underwater, and am
experienced in SCUBA diving and the management of scientific diving operations.
Current interests focus on Marine Protected Areas in the UK Overseas Territories (Cayman
Islands, British Indian Ocean Territory-Chagos Archipelago) and Coastal Zone Management
and Sustainable Development (eg in east Africa). Collaborations have been established with
organisations overseas, such as the Department of Environment Cayman, The Nature
Conservancy USA, Institute of Marine Science/ University of Dar es Salaam, Seychelles Island
Foundation, Zoological Society of London and University of Warwick. I am a Executive
member of the Chagos Conservation Trust, a member of the Natural Environment Research
Council (NERC) Peer Review College, and member of the steering group of NERC’s National
Facility for Scientific Diving.
I have grant income of £1.486 m over the past 5 years. Current projects include: Darwin
Initiative Assuring Engagement in Cayman’s Enhanced Marine Protected Area System 2013-
2014 DEFRA £190,000; Darwin Initiative to strengthen World’s largest MPA, Chagos
Archipelago 2012-2015 DEFRA £287,778; Darwin Initiative to enhance an established marine
protected area system, Cayman Islands 2010-2013 DEFRA £273,914; Sustainable and
Environmentally Friendly Aquaculture for the Atlantic Region of Europe 2007-2013, EU RDF
(total e2.67m: Species & Ecosystem Conservation in relation to coastal aquaculture (activity
lead) e801,765); Coastal Zone Management (activity co-lead) 2010-2015 EU RDF part of
£9m; Marine Biology & Sustainable Development for East Africa, UNESCO / DfID-DelPHE
2009-14: £53k.
Dr John R. Turner Curriculum Vitae 2

conference presentations, and I have supervised 16 PhD students, 119 MSc theses, been
external examiner for 10 PhD/MPhil, and been degree award external examiner at 5 other
universities.
I was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship in recognition of outstanding contribution to
teaching and pastoral care and is a member of the Academy of Teaching Fellows. I teach at
all levels – Year 1: Tutorial, Marine Biology Practical Course 1 (Taxonomy), Year 2: Marine

School of Ocean Sciences, Course Director, MSc Marine Environmental Protection (for 22
years, 1989 – 2011)
The MSc in Marine Environmental Protection (MEP) trains graduates in the priority areas of
the NERC strategy ‘Science for a Sustainable Future’ and consequently UK and overseas skills
needs.
Future generations of marine environmental scientist are central to the task of identifying
and providing sustainable solutions to energy, land use and hazard mitigation. These
graduates will require multidisciplinary training, because the coastal zone is a complex
region of interaction between land and sea, and heavily utilised by Man for natural
protection, food and minerals, commercial operations, and living and recreation. Besides
applying subject knowledge, graduates require excellence in the field skills and advanced
techniques needed to operate in this often hostile environment; quantitative skills to assess
resources and to predict threats; a realistic understanding of commerce and governance;
Dr John R. Turner Curriculum Vitae 41
and communication and inter personnel skills to work together to bring their findings before
the decision makers such that future development is sustainable.
The primary aims of the course are:
(1) To broaden awareness of the economic potential of the ocean;
(2) To generate an understanding of the major marine biological resources and the
physical processes that control these resources;
(3) To provide theoretical and practical training in measuring and quantifying the
resources and the effects of conflicting usage upon them;
(4) To enhance those skills necessary to manage effectively sea areas of national
jurisdiction;
(5) To provide appropriate experience for developing policy and making decisions on
marine resource exploitation and protection for your individual regions or countries
Evidence of Course Quality:
Course approved by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) 1990, 1992, 1996, 2005
and 2008 and has received NERC Studentships every year. The course currently has 5 NERC
Studentships per year, valued at £188,000
Demand for places on the course is high at about 3:1; and an Upper Second class degree or
higher and appropriate experience is required to gain one of the 30 places
Approximately one third of graduates gain Distinctions (>70%)
The course consistently receives excellent External Examiner reports
>90% graduates find careers in a relevant field to marine environmental protection in UK or
overseas
Administrative duties over 22 years for this course involved:
Course Design and Development: Updating aims, teaching methods, learning
outcomes and maintaining an up to date and validated course specification
Student support: Listening, talking and generally engaging with students, attending to
their concerns, needs and problems. Taking interest in every student, and generating
enthusiasm. Providing guidance and advice on academic and non academic aspects,
including future progression. Being sympathetic and knowing when to be clear and
firm
Course publicity: Preparation of material for distribution information packs, flyers,
press adverts, and attendance and advertising at conferences and meetings
Applications and admissions: A substantial area of administrative work which is year
round. The course attracts up to 100 applications each year (previously around 200,
but there are more courses now), including many overseas applicants. Involves
answering queries about the course and funding, interviewing, hosting visiting
students, involvement in Open Days and selection of students, and close liaison with
School postgraduate secretary, and English Language Training Courses
