Why this is important
Practical design offers unique storage efficiency and management effectiveness
Consistent extent size makes volume creation and dynamic expansion very easy
Consistent extent size makes extent pools very flexible in terms of size, data type, and allocation
Extent-based volumes dont leave orphaned capacity scattered throughout the system
This design enables Easy Tier to perform effective tiering by dynamically distributing extentsacross tiers or within a tier
Superior volume management drives efficiency and effectivenessBase extent pool design offers tremendous simplicity, flexibility, efficiency
* Extents are 1GB (fixed block) or about 0.94 GB (CKD)
All the capacity in the DS8000 is organized into extent pools
Extent pools contain consistent1GBextents
Extents are the building blocks forallvolumes
Foundational storage pooldesign simplifies management andsystem efficiency

Easy Tier enhancements (2nd generation)Superior volume management leads to higher efficiency and flexibility
Managingstoragegrowth
Easy Tier automatic mode now supports migration between any two tiers
Initial release addressed need for faster performance with efficient and effective SSD deployments
Required SSDs to be paired with either enterprise or nearline HDDs
Release 6.1 addresses need for maintaining fast performance (without SSDs) while reducing drivecount with effective use of large capacity nearline drives
Extends DS8000 scalability by migrating cold data to nearline drives
Enterprise-class value at midrange price points
Automatic extentrebalancing within a tier
Easy Tier automatic mode redistributes extents within a tier whenever it shows I/O skew, when newcapacity is added or when capacity is removed
Helps keep performance optimized when capacity changes
Applies only to Easy Tier managed pools
Rank depopulation
Easy Tier can reallocate extents from previously used arrays back into extent pool without taking dataoffline
Easy and effective way to repurpose capacity that can help performance rebalancing
Invoked when administrator manually unassigns an existing rank

Examples of key performance optimization differentiators
IBM Power-based design provides exceptionally high performance
8 Gbps host anddevice adapters
Storage Pool Striping is easy to implement and proactively avoids hotspots
4KB cache pages (slots) optimize processor memory utilization and costs
Advanced caching algorithms help optimize workload performance in the
milliseconds-seconds range
New I/O Priority Manager helps optimize application QoS easily and
effectively in the minutes range
Easy Tier helps optimizes performance across tiers or within a tier in the
daily range
Proven DS8000 architecture drives performanceSuperior design enables tremendous performance, flexibility, efficiency

I/O Priority Manager aligns service levels to separate workloads in the system Administrators select from 4 Performance Groups (service levels) to assign to each volume
1 for highest; 2 for standard; 3 for low priority; 0 for no priority (default)
All volumes are associated with a Performance Group and all I/Os are monitored
System resources are dynamically allocated to higher priority volumes (applications) when there is
resource contention
How I/O Priority Manager works I/O Priority Manager delays the right amount of I/O from lower priority volumes, so higher priorityvolumes get more throughput
Automatic and only when there is contention for a resource between multiple volumes
I/O Priority ManagerAutomated quality of service management delivers performance when and where
its needed and enables greater storage efficiency and consolidation

How IBM Global Financing adds value
IBMStorage Client How w e addedvalue
University of Calgary
Attractive lease option reduces TCO: Since budget was a major concern the university arranged
a lease program through IBM Global Financing Services. In addition to helping reduce the total
cost of ownership, leasing helps the university keep technologies current and make flexibleequipment decisions to support student growth and changing administrative needs.
LEGO Systems IBM Global Financing was able to assist during this period of very high growth, as ourinvestment budget is required for many different projects. LEGO is in a capital intensiveplatform-building phase, and we are perhaps 50 percent complete. IBM Global Financing wasable to make the investments possible without diverting precious resources away from the core
business building activities. - Esben Viskum, Senior Director, LEGO Service Center
Packet One Networks
Helped client to:
Preserve capital for marketing expenditures that help exploit growth opportunities
Expedite implementation and easily continue its aggressive growth
Decrease total cost of ownership 64.8% savings over four years
Rochling Automotive
IBM Global Financing delivered funding for hardware and SAP software in three stages to alignwith implementation progress with repayment for all three stages calculated across the 39-month
period, all in a single monthly payment
Rchling Automotive achieved a single monthly payment plan for the whole project.
Ensured that client could implement the latest technology to support business-critical R&D
processes, and also released several million Euros of capital to invest in other projects
