This exam was developed to enable schools to awardcredit to students for knowledge equivalent to thatlearned by students taking the course. The exam deals

with the history of art during various periods, including:Romanesque and Gothic; Renaissance; Baroque;Rococo; neoclassicism and romanticism; realism,impressionism and post-impressionism; and post-World War II.

The exam contains approximately 88 questions to beanswered in 90 minutes.

The following is an outline of the content areascovered in the examination. The approximate

percentage of the examination devoted to eachcontent area is also noted.

I. Classical  – 12%a. Ancient Greeceb. Republican and Imperial Rome

I. Romanesque and Gothic  – 8%a. Early Middle Ages to the Romanesque periodb. High Middle Ages (Gothic)

II. Early Renaissance  – 10%a. Italyb. Northern Europe

III. High Renaissance  – 13%a. Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelob. Venetian art and architecture

IV. Baroque  – 10%a. Italy and Austriab. Spain, Holland, and Flanders

V. Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romanticism – 13%

VI. Realism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism  – 11%

VII. Early Twentieth Century  – 10%a. Emergence of modern styles: e.g. art nouveau,

expressionism, and cubismb. Art between the World Wars: e.g. dada and

surrealism

VIII. Post World War II  – 13%a. 1945-1968: e.g. abstract impressionism and

pop artb. 1968 to the present

Below is a list of reference publications that wereeither used as a reference to create the exam, or wereused as textbooks in college courses of the same or 

similar title at the time the test was developed. Youmay reference either the current edition of these titlesor  textbooks currently used at a local college or university for the same class title. It is recommendedthat you reference more than one textbook on thetopics outlined in this fact sheet. You should begin bychecking textbook content against the content outline provided before selecting textbooks that cover the test content from which to study.
