    WHY?

    Adoption and permanency in the child welfare systemhas been a growing area of importance in recentyears. Studies have shown that children and youth

    who find permanence before aging out of thesystem fair much better than their emancipatingpeers. So how do we get these children ready forsuch a huge, life-changing journey? And how do wemold the minds of those resistant children and youthto consent to what we know will end in a better resultthan aging out of the foster care system? Thefollowing is information on methods and approachesthat can be used to help prepare children for adoptionso that they can be successful in their forever families.

    This document, found on the Child WelfareInformation Gateway, gives information for fosterparents who plan to adopt the foster children in their

    home. It gives tips and some structure around how totalk to the children about the upcoming change, andapproaches to answering the questions the childrenwill have depending upon their developmental level.Ecomaps, lifebooks and lifemaps are given as ways toassist a child in understanding their life experiences sothey can successfully move forward. Scholarly

    sources are noted, showing the information to bereputable. Also briefly discussed are losses andattachment, and how to help children to workthrough these issues.

    This is the website of the National Child WelfareResource Center for Adoption. It outlines theirAdoption Competency Curriculum, this particular

    section being on child assessment and preparation. Itis a curriculum that trains adoption professionals onhow to assess children for adoption, how to best meetthe needs of children in foster and adoptive homes,how to make the most appropriate decisions withregards to planning and placement, assisting childrenin understanding what is happening and empoweringthem to participate in the process. I particularly likethe idea in this curriculum of reframing problembehaviors as survival behaviors.
