A prime cultural landmark in Connaught Place, New Delhi from the Government of Spain
consisting of a Spanish language teaching center with classrooms, Offices, 150 seat
auditorium, Library, two Exhibition Halls and a cafeteria. EcoDesign was employed to bring
to this exciting project the key aspects of innovative design, close supervision of execution,
local knowledge and interior design with international design standards to this building. The
building has been designed as an experience with formal and informal spaces for the
students and staff to create an interactive multi cultural environment in the building. While
being a simplistic and modern building, it blends to the existing urban context of “Art-Deco”
architectural style of Connaught Place in New Delhi. The building attempts to tie- up the
identity of both Indian & Spanish cultures together under one roof, in a project with modern
European spaces in an Indian context.

Good Hopes hospital is a 100 bedded hospital located on a plot of about 3 acres in a semi-
rural area on a busy national highway. The hospital has been planned around a large long
semi-covered courtyard oriented towards south-north. The floor plates have been deliberately
kept very narrow to have ample daylight for all-patients,doctors,workers and the visitors. The
ground floor comprises of OPD’s, Radiology, Casualty and admin block. The above floors
consist of inpatient rooms on one floor and operation theaters, ICU’s, etc on one floor on the
basis of quantum of flow of people.
Keeping in mind the purchasing power of the patients envisaged, it was decided to have only
clinical areas as air-conditioned, to keep the operational costs down. In order to still have a
comfortable environment, various features like wind towers, earth-air cooling, well insulated
and appropriately designed envelope have been proposed. Also a tri-generation unit has been
proposed, using locally available biomass for electrical generation, cooling and heating needs
of the hospital.

The Spanish Embassy approached EcoDesign Architects for an annexe to their existing
building that could accommodate their visa section as well as the facilities required for the
main entry to accommodate their security nucleus for the embassy. An important prerequisite
was to ensure and provide a solution to accommodate all the requirements with international
quality standards with the aid of local knowledge to blend with their existing structure. The
attempt was to cater the different requirements and needs of the users, creating an energy
efficient building with minimal running costs accounting for maximum natural daylight without
compromising on the security of the complex. The thermal performance of this building has
been improved by the use of Screens (jaalis), North lights, roofs with heat reflecting
surfaces, etc. An architectural expression is being created that will blend with the existing
structures while preserving the natural flora of the site, as nodal points of both the blocks with
glass and jails creating a semi lucid effect.

In conjunction with Ashok B.Lall Architects, this project has been awarded a LEED
Platinum by the US Green Building Council. The client was keen to make a very
sustainable building where the dissemination of sustainable techniques could be
exhibited to the common people. Conservation of resources was an important concern
that was addressed by the team with the use of stabilized mud blocks, using materials
with recycled content and reusing most of construction waste. All rain water of the site is
reused by directing into an underground rain water harvesting tank of 4,00,000 liters
which provide over 50% of the HVAC Make-up water. The building has incorporated
various green initiatives like efficient HVAC system, Sewage treatment plant, day-
lighting design, sun shading devices and a photovoltaic array of 59KW catering to all

IGNOU campus was built in temporary structures about 25 years ago. With increaseddemand of space, poor maintenance and lack of any architectural expression forced theUniversity to call for a national competition for the facelifting of the campus. After analysisof the usage pattern, requirements and difficulties of the existing campus the proposallooked at the pedestrian flow and inter connectivity of the blocks, lack of unity andarchitectural language in the complex and difficulty of access.A Unitarian proposal was provided creating new clear visual and physical links betweenthe existing blocks, demarcated and well designed areas for services, breathing pocketsof landscaped areas for interaction of staff and students and retrofit of the buildingenvelope. The different facades were treated differently as per their orientation to let inmore natural light, and secondly the thermal performance of the complete envelope waslooked at, researched and improved. The attempt was to depend less on air-conditioningand artificial lighting with clear views from all the spaces.
