Eaton’s Type MG double insulated standard resistor millbanks are employed in every conceivable type of resistor application.
A standard millbank is one in which each grid in the bank is identical with a continuous current path throughout the unit. In addition, a standard millbank is equipped with a tapping point on every alternate grid. There is a maximum of 21 standard banks only. With this quantity in stock as spare units, any breakdown can be corrected immediately by simply removing the defective bank, replacing it with a similar unit from stock, and reconnecting on the same tapping points.
The illustration on the right shows that the standard MG range of millbanks is fully double insulated from grid to tie rod and then from tie rod to mounting end-plate. The substantial insulators have a 100% South African design and manufacturing content. They are manufactured from highly resilient glass polyester. Similar insulators separate the grid stack from the resistor tie rods.
The complete range of MG millbanks are made from quality Carpenter chrome steel, which defies rust and corrosion. They are preferred units to every large crane user, as well as to the mining industry for rotor circuit control and, as listed on page 10, for neutral earthing duties.

Type 3 PG millbanks are identical in dimensions, materials and
construction to the standard type MG double insulated millbanks
detailed on pages 6 and 7 of this catalogue. They differ only
in that they contain three electrically separate sections.
Typical applications will be 3 phase rotor resistors; 3 phase
primary resistor for squirrel cage motors; 3 phase resistor
starting of a closed transition Star-delta starter.
3 PG banks are also double insulated to withstand the severest
of crane and industrial motor control requirements.

1.3Type WL custom built resistor banks
Features and Construction
• Standard NEMA dimensions
• Standard NEMA end-plates
• Stainless steel grids
• Double insulation
• Argon gas welded seams
The type WL resistor banks are assembled on a grid to suit basis, ie. different sizes to suit ohmic and current values per section of starting resistance.
Separate phases in a single bank are insulated from each other by means of glass polyester insulators. The type WL banks are physically identical to the MG bank dimension wise and use the same grids but in different configuration. They can be less costly than millbanks but as they are purpose-built it is not feasible to carry spare units.

Features
Eaton manufactures a large range of neutral earthing resistors for the South African market. The units are free standing, natural air cooled and enclosed in heavy duty sheet steel enclosures. They can be insulated for voltages up to 11kV as standard and have short time ratings of 10, 20, 30 and 60 seconds.
The resistor is made up of standard millbank units.
External connections
Two connection points are provided on the enclosure. One is ceramic 3,3kV/11kV insulated through-bushing, for external connection to the transformer star point. The earth connection will be to a heavy brass stud mounted on the side of the enclosure 300mm from the base.
Enclosure
This is fabricated from 1,6mm sheet steel, suitably braced and welded to form a rugged free-standing unit. Its design is such that it affords complete electrical clearance and mechanical protection for the internal units, plus full protection from the environment. It is designed for outdoor use. The four side covers around the enclosure are held in position with Hex-head bolts. The front and rear covers are fitted with handles to facilitate removal and handling.
All metalwork is pickled and epoxied to a high grade finish.
Colour - Cutler-Hammer grey.

1.5Spool resistor units – Type L
Features
• Continuous element
• Robust construction
• Uniform size
• Light in weight and compact
• Wide range of capacity and resistance values
Spool resistor units are made of spiral grooved porcelain bases wound with advance or nichrome wire; the wire is wound on a mandrel and then wound on the spiral base which results in well ventilated and high wattage capacity units.
The ratings specified are maximum for units mounted in free air. If units are mounted where ventilation is restricted or mounted close together the maximum wattage rating is reduced. For such conditions, resistors in well ventilated enclosures can be rated at 80% and in unventilated enclosures at 65% of maximum wattage.
