ELERMORE
ENDEAVOUR
Term 4 Week 2 25 October 2019
Dear Parents and Carers,
Practice and organisation for our upcoming school
production is in full swing, with tickets now available
to be purchased. Mrs Robertson is delighted with how
the performances are coming together and
costumes and props are starting to arrive. Keep an
eye out for upcoming ‘teasers’ to promote the big
event.
Our first Kindergarten transition date for 2020 is fast
approaching. Plenty of fun activities and tours of the
school are being planned to welcome our newest
students to Elermore Vale. This will start on Friday.
With the warmer weather upon us please ensure your
child has their hat and plenty of water packed each
day. Sunscreen applied in the morning is also a great
idea as we still want to encourage our students to be
active in play breaks.
Next Friday is our annual school colour run. This
promises to be a fun event for all. Make sure your child
comes well prepared to get colourful and messy! I’ll
be looking for my whitest of white clothes to see what
designes can be created by the end of the day.
We are definitely getting busier and busier. Coming
up we have Swim School, leadership speeches and
elections and Blue and Gold Day. Keep an eye on the
calendar to keep up to date with what we have
planned.

Did you know Elermore Vale PS has a Breakfast Club?
Every Tuesday and Thursday all students can have
breakfast at school. Between 8:30 and 8:50 our staff are
cooking toast and serving up cereal to our students for
free! A big thank you goes to our Kellogg’s for the donation
of cereal to the school and our P&C for providing funds to
get us started. What a great way to start the day!

What’s happening in 5/6G?
Jelly egg experiment
In Science, we are learning about the properties of solids, liquids and gases. To start our unit, we
conducted an experiment to attempt to remove the hard shell of an egg. Success! The acid in
the vinegar broke down the hard shell and left only the soft, transparent membrane of the egg! It
took our class 36 hours to get a result!
#GOALS
In 5/6G this term, we are focusing on our personal goals. Students are working hard towards
achieving their learning goals with Miss Willoughby. We have created a #GOALS wall within our
classroom so that we can see our goals and track our progress!

and how to show respect during individual and group work.
Key behaviours to remember:
Treat all equipment with respect
Move about the room quietly
Hands up and wait
Listen actively
Use your manners
Work quietly and allow others to do their work
What an exciting time we have had rehearsing for our school concert!!
There are Hawaiians, pirates, surfers, Tina turner and Her Rock Birds and many
more delightful and famous characters
AND
Hollywood is calling in to see our special effects!

During the first week of the recent school holidays, 9 boys from our school, Eli L, Charlie G, Preston R, Caleb S,
Zachary H, Henry H, Samuel J, Joshua S and Jackson R, were chosen to represent Northern NSW in a number of
teams to play at The Schools Nationals held in Brisbane. The boys played teams from many of the other states,
such as Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland.
All the boys played their best and represented us with pride. Whilst some of our boys didn't make it to the finals
unfortunately, special mention must go to both Preston, Caleb and Charlie whose teams all made the semi-finals;
and a huge congratulations goes out to Eli whose team won the grand final and is now able to call himself a
National Champion. Well done to all the boys.
Our preschool playground upgrades are in full swing and it is
looking fabulous. Students are enjoying exploring the new areas
and the opportunity to be creative in the mud kitchen, trickling
water down the rock bed creek and using their new
environments. More upgrades are coming, in particular the
playground equipment and shade sails for the sandpit.
Today our school community participated in the Fearless Challenge. Representing #Teamophie, students came
to school out of uniform and were set the task of riding 150 kilometres as a team to complete the challenge. By
midday we had smashed this goal and set ourselves another challenge to get to 150 kilometres on each bike for
the day. This is a part of raising awareness for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

National Recycling Week, 11th - 15th November.
Over the past few years, the need for awareness of sustainable living practices has increased
significantly around the world – and recycling has become more crucial than ever with our fast-growing
population. In fact, a nationwide review revealed that waste has increased around 170% since 1996,
which is why becoming more environmentally responsible has never been more urgent.
This term, we will be bringing recycling to the forefront in Outside School Hours Care by celebrating
National Recycling Week from 11th to 15th November. It is going to be a fun-filled week as we teach
children all about sustainability and how they can contribute to the world for future generations!
Our aim is to develop their knowledge and creativity on recycling through fun-learning activities. Some
of these include using used bottles or cartons for planting, making newspaper hats, an exciting recycled
fashion parade, and heaps more! Talk to the Educators at your service to find out what they have lined
up for National Recycling Week.

Free home-based assessment and treatment for 7 to 12 year old children with fear and anxiety disorders.
GU Ref No: 2019/146
Does your child become very afraid of certain situations or objects, worry about a lot of things, get very distressed, or try to avoid things they fear?
About the studyOur team at Griffith University may be able to assist you. We are conducting a nationwide study that includes the following services at no cost to families:
• A thorough assessment of your child’s anxiety with a trained psychologist via the telephone;
• Your child receiving one of two kinds of home-based treatments delivered on a PC, laptop or tablet; and
• Two follow-up telephone assessments with a trained psychologist 6- and 12-months after treatment to track your child’s progress.
The study aims to find out if these two treatments are as effective as each other, and which children have the best response to each kind of treatment. This will mean that there are more evidence-based treatments available for helping anxious children.
About the treatmentsEach treatment involves your child completing treatment sessions at home on a PC, laptop or tablet.
Each treatment involves your child learning practical strategies to better manage anxiety.
• One treatment helps children learn to control the focus of their attention on helpful things around them.
• The other treatment helps children learn to think differently and approach things they fear.
Each treatment includes information, telephone or email support for parents in assisting their child to better manage anxiety.
Prior studies have shown that children who complete each treatment experience significant reductions in anxiety.
Contact usThis study is being funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and is led by Professor Allison Waters and a team of experts in childhood anxiety disorders.
