possible a combined CAS for the 6 week pre-sessional course and their upcoming

complete the registration process by answering a number of questions on a
computer. You may also need to take a short English test which we will use to
determine which class to place you in. There may also be lectures in the afternoon to
provide you with more information about your course and studying in Sheffield. A
final plan for the first day and week of your course will be sent to you approximately 1
week before the start date of your course.
16. ShuranChen: Hi everybody.

* Chris - ELTC: You will be contacted by the Admissions Department by e-mail

* Heather Duggan: Unless you already hold an unconditional offer for the University,

* Heather Duggan: =-)
43. Yiting Shen: May I ask for a combined CAS for both my six weeks pre-sessional

* Chris - ELTC: We are trying to offer combined CAS for both your pre-sessional
course and your masters course. The Admissions Department will contact you soon
regarding your CAS.
44. CAI Lei: Thanks. But I have to wait for at least another month for my final grades. I
am afarid that will cause problems. I may late for the laguage course.

57. aimee 2: is it really difficult to pass final test
* Chris - ELTC: If you attend all your classes, join in with ELTC social activities and
practice your English outside of the classroom, you should be able to pass the final
test at the end of the course. Our entry requirements are set at the level they are to
ensure that all students will have a good chance of passing the test at the required
level for their prospective academic course.
58. hawazin: hi every one

contact you very soon regarding this.
71. farnosuh: I wanted to know that if one of my IELTS scores is band 5, do I still have
to apply for the ELTC and pass that test as well? thanks
* Chris - ELTC: If your academic offer is conditional on you achieving a specific
language requirement which you have not yet met, then you can either attend an
ELTC course or you can take a further English exam in your home country in order to
gain entry onto your prospective academic course.
72. CAI Lei: Thank you very much. So may I wirte an e-mail to the Adminstration
department and ask about my six-week Visa? Which address should I wirte to? I just

[email protected] to enquire about your CAS

course and my full-time master course? I haven not finished my doundation final
test, but i have the conditional offer
* Chris - ELTC: We hope to be able to offer you a combined CAS if you only have a
language condition for your academic course. The Admissions department will
contact you very soon regarding this. If you still have academic conditions for your
academic offer which you have not yet met, you may only be able to request a single
CAS for the 6 week pre-sessional course. You'll then be sent a second CAS after

74. Yiting Shen: could you please tell me the name of the textbook we will use during
our six weeks pre-sessional language course?
* Chris - ELTC: We've not yet confirmed which textbook we will be using for the 6

undergraduate class begin on about 28th, Sept?
* Cally - Accommodation Office: Hi Diana, If you have applied for our
Accommodation for your academic course, and your application is successful, then
we can look into providing accommodation during this period. You will have one
week after your pre-sessional to remain in the accommodation, and this gives you
time to get your results, and either look for your own accommodation privately, or be
allocated accommodation with us.
76. rickzrn: thx ~Chris
* Chris - ELTC: No problem!
77. Tadayuki Hohyama: Hello. I've got a conditional offer and if I decide to go to the
university of Sheffield, I need to take 6 week pre sessional course. But by when
should I answer if I go to your university to keep my seat?
* Chris - ELTC: Our 6 week pre-sessional course is very popular and we only have a
limited number of places remaining. We would advise you to apply for the 6 week
pre-sessional course as soon as possible if you would like to attend. You do not need
to accept your academic offer before applying for the 6 week pre-sessional course if
you wish to keep your options open.
78. Amy: Hi everybody
* Chris - ELTC: Hi Amy!
79. L: Hi! I am waiting for my CAS of 6-week course, so should I pay tuition in advance?
Also, I have not book accommodation. Would it be a problem?
* Heather Duggan: You would be advised to book ELTC accommodation for your
ELTC course, as it may be a problem for you to find short-term accommodation
otherwise. See details of ELTC accommodation for pre-sessionals and how to apply
here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/eltc
80. yuziqi: Will the school help me to apply my visa in uk ?
* Heather Duggan: As long as you have visa for your ELTC course, when you come to
the UK and pass your ELTC course you will be assisted with instructions of how to
apply for visa when you are on your ELTC course
81. frank lee: hi this is Frank my question is HOW far does the flat away from the
police station cuz I've been told that I need to do register ASAP when I arrived in
Sheffield
* Heather Duggan: You will be advised of how to register with the police when you
are here. I can't say how close you'll live to the police station but I'm sure the ELTC
will help you to find how to do this, or you can ask at the SSID desk in the Student's
Union
82. CAI Lei: Thanks a lot for the bed package information. One more thing to ask, will
you offer us some guiding about the route form airport or train station to our
accomadations?
* Cally - Accommodation Office: Hi Cai, the best thing for students to do is to make
their way to Sheffield via train. From the Sheffield train station, you can get a bus
from the station to our accommodation, although it is probably easier to get a taxi as
you may have a lot of luggage. Please see the following link regarding getting to our
accommodation sites https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/location.
83. 翦梦绮: hello,may I ask a question?My major is Global Journalism,and I will join the

the pre-registration email, did I miss some steps to get the email?
* Chris - ELTC: Hi Jian, can you provide me with your full name and date of birth - I
can then check on your pre-registration e-mail.
85. hao: Could you please tell me the location of our classroom for ten weeks pre-
sessional language course?
* Chris - ELTC: Hi Hao, we can't confirm which building your class will take place in
until you register for your course. Your class will be taught on the main University
campus. You can view a map of the campus here -
http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/visitors/mapsandtravel/university
86. AO SHEN: hi,I want to know where should we start our per-language course?in
ELTC?
* Heather Duggan: Pre-sessionals will be taken with the ELTC.
87. Susong: Hi, I wanna ask why am I haven't get the CAS about 10weeks course?

88. aimee 2: can u recommend the domitory to me I dont know which place is near
my apartment ..i will major in urban designing and planning
* Elaine - Accommodation Office: hi aimee2, unfortunately we have set
accommodation available for eltc students so you are not able able to choose your
preferred room type or location.
I can confiirm that if you are coming on the June or August eltc course
accommodation is available in Ranmoor in en suite rooms. If you are coming on the
July course you will be offered an ensuite room in the city accommodation.
You can apply online using the link
below:http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/eltc
I hope this helps. Thanks
89. 孙紫涵: can I live in the same room during both English and the class
* Cally - Accommodation Office: Hi, our accommmodation for the ELTC pre-
sessional course is for the ELTC periods only, students are not able to remain in their
ELTC rooms after their pre-sessional course, and they must apply for
accommodation seperately for their academic course. You can apply for
accommodation for your academic course at the following link
https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective.
90. ShuranChen: If I want to rent the accom outside the University, what's the general
price there?
* Heather Duggan: These vary depending on whether or not they include bills, so I
would advise taking a look at the PropertywithUs site for advice on local private
accommodation and costs: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/propertywithus
91. L: Thanks. So you mean I should book it now even I don not get my CAS?
* Heather Duggan: There will be instructions on the ELTC accommodation
application web page as to what to do and when:
http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/eltc
92. Sam: Is there any additional fee for textbook use in the pre-session courses?
* Chris - ELTC: No, the textbooks will be provided to you when you begin the class.
You do not need to pay any extra fees for your textbooks.
93. frank lee: another question that I wanna be imparted by the officer :if I finish my
first MA program and what conditions do I need to follow ?
* Chris - ELTC: If you're studying an MA in the UK then you might not need to take an
English language qualification. You should contact the Admissions Department for
more information - [email protected]
94. AnilKumar: Hi
* Heather Duggan: =-)
95. sherin: Hi, I have received an unconditional offer letter. My IELTS score is 6.5.
Would like to know is it compulsory to attend a course at ELTC.. Thank you
* Chris - ELTC: No, if you have an unconditional academic offer then attending an
ELTC course is completely optional.
96. Ce Song: sorry I don't understand. So,when should I apply for accommodation for
my formal course during my pre-session course
* Elaine - Accommodation Office: hi Ce Song, once you accept your offer to study
at the University for your degree september course, you can apply for
accommodation online using the
link :http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective
I can confirm that you do not have to wait until you have completed your ELTC
course. I hope this helps
97. hao: oh, thank you !
* Heather Duggan: =-)
98. hawazin: what i can do,, i want private accomidation for me and my brother ,,
* Heather Duggan: Please contact the Student Advice centre for advice on suitable
private accommodation for you and your brother. You don't indicate if you're both
students or not, but in either way, they can help:
http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/contacts/advice
99. Jian: *personal details removed*
* Chris - ELTC: Thanks - we're still processing your pre-registration e-mail. You will
be sent it soon, but sometimes we aren't able to send them until closer to the start
date of your course. If you haven't received a pre-registration e-mail when there are
less than 4 weeks to the start date of your course, please e-mail [email protected]
for assistance
100. huangjihui: Hello! I took another ielts test several days ago and now I'm waiting
for the result. So I'd like to ask if my score meets the requirement of my MA
course(suppose I'm lucky enough,) is it possible to change my 6 weeks language
course to a four weeks one? Many thanks!
* Chris - ELTC: Hi, yes if you meet the requirements for your MA, you just need to
send us your new IELTS result. We can then ask our course director to review your
request to switch from the 6 week to the 4 week course. Usually these requests are
accepted by the course director!
101. 孙紫涵: excuse me I want to know sth about the accommodation
* Heather Duggan: Please ask your question fully in the text box and press enter,
and wait for an answer.
102. ShuranChen: is the pre-sessional subject-oriented? For example, if my major is
Advanced Software Engineering, will my pre-course be around these content?
* Chris - ELTC: Yes, we try to place students in classes with other students who plan
on studying similar academic subjects. Your teacher will then cover some English
language material related to your prospective academic course.
103. yuziqi: May i ask for a combined CAS for both my six week pre-sessional course
and my full-time undergraduate course? Should i book my accommdation before i
receive my CAS
* Heather Duggan: Combined CAS is normally issued just for those students who
already meet all their academic and English requirements, so it will depend on your
circumstances. For advice about your particular case, contact the ELTC and check.
you can book accommodation before getting CAS but won't be allocated any or asked
to pay until you have the CAS and visa
104. aimee 2: hi last question that really confused me ,the pass rate of final English
test?
* Chris - ELTC: Nearly all students pass the final test. If you attend all your classes
and keep practicing your English you should be able to pass. We don't give out
information on pass rates.
105. Susong: Do we need to have a IELTS examination at the end of the courses or
other ways to text the language level?
* Chris - ELTC: At the end of the 10 week pre-sessional course students will take the
University of Sheffield English Proficiency Test (USEPT). Passing the USEPT with a
high enough result will result in you obtaining an unconditional academic offer.
Students attending the 6 week pre-sessional course will be assessed throughout the
duration of the course. You will not need to take another IELTS exam after finishing
your ELTC course.
106. frank lee: thank you Chris
* Heather Duggan: =-)
107. Xuan Zhong 2: Hi, there are some classmates who will take 10 weeks course had

* Heather Duggan: Yes, it is just about the ELTC and the pre-sessional courses today.
109. 翦梦绮: And during the presessional course, what teaching material should we

one is meet with my MA course language requirements. Should I sent them to you?
Besides, are there any changes about the language offer as well as fees?
* Chris - ELTC: You should first send your new IELTS result to the Admissions
Department to convert your academic offer to unconditional. Once you've done that,
you can send your new IELTS to [email protected] and request to switch to our 4
week pre-sessional course. We will need to send you a new offer letter for the 4
week pre-sessional course as the dates and fees are different
121. AnilKumar: Thank you..
* Heather Duggan: =-)
122. Susong: thank you ,Chris~
* Heather Duggan: =-)
123. yuziqi: I applied for the 6 weeks presessional course, whether i need to pass the
test in pressional course then i can go to the university or not
* Chris - ELTC: You will be assessed throughout the 6 week pre-sessional course.
The assessment plans for the 6 week course are still being finalised, but you probably
won't need to take a test at the end of the 6 week pre-sessional course.
124. frank lee: Does the accomodation for the MA program also provide the bedding
package?
* Elaine - Accommodation Office: hi Frank, I can cofnirm that the accommodation
for your degree course in september does not include a bedding pack, this is only
provided to students booking eltc summer accommodation. Please note students
coming in September can purchase a bedding pack separately and arrange for this to

* Chris - ELTC: This may be possible, however you would have to contact the
appropriate academic department regarding changing your chosen academic course.
129. ShuranChen: what materials do I need to have for applying the ELTC visa once
we get our CAS number? sorry for typing errors
* Heather Duggan: You'll get advice in emails and instructions from the ELTC.

but you said you need to provide a Financial Guarantee from the Bureau,,but i have it
form my university,,
* Chris - ELTC: If your financial guarantee is issued by your University then that is
acceptable for admissions purposes. When you begin studying we will require a more
detailed financial guarantee which explains how your embassy will pay for your
tuition fees.
138. JinX: Hi,Can I continue to live in the apartment for one week after September 12?
* Elaine - Accommodation Office: hi JinX, thanks for your question, If you book
University accommodation for your September course then we can make a special
arangement for you to remain in our accommodation between 12 September and 19

score, is there a difference on which class to apply for? also, where can I find the

the English language requirements you need to reach in order to begin your

152. Tianhua Xia: Do 6 week pre-sessional course students need to take the USEPT?
* Chris - ELTC: We cannot confirm at present whether those attending the 6 week
pre-sessional course will need to take the USEPT. It is however looking likely that you
will not need to take the USEPT if you attend the 6 week pre-sessional course as we
are hoping to introduce new assessment procedures throughout the whole course

cost for bus fees from Ranmoor accommodation to ELTC campus?

160. Xuan Zhong 2: Hi, what's the IELTS scores request for the 6 weeks language
course?
* Chris - ELTC: The entry requirements for our pre-sessional courses are available

should be able to enter the UK at any time after the valid from date on your visa.
Unfortunately we cannot advise you exactly when your visa will be valid from - you'll
have to wait until your visa is issued.

* Chris - ELTC: If you miss the first week of your classes you will need to work hard
to catch up with your classmates. Your performance in the final exam is entirely up to
you. As long as you study hard and attend all your classes you should be able to pass
with the required score.
