the spirit of the future.
What would the society o the uture look like without sciences thatare able to anticipate and react rapidly to intellectual and technologicalchallenges? What will sustain it without talented and responsible engineers, capable o both rigor and creativity ? These are the issues to which we wishto make a signifcant contribution. The Ecole Polytechnique Fdrale de
Lausanne is a world-class institution, consistently in the top 20 in mostscientifc and technical rankings but this is not the whole story. Our school, which has existed in its current orm since 1969, blends its recently establishedhistory with a long tradition o Swiss excellence.
Today, EPFL is a campus with more than 8,000 students albeit on a humanscale and a high-tech institution with a reputation or basic research,as well as or its contribution to the great scientifc and environmentaladventures o tomorrow. We beneft rom a special kind o environment. That o Lake Geneva, one o the most cosmopolitan areas in Europe, onwhose shore stands our main campus. And an entrepreneurial dynamic, exemplifed by the 20 or so start-up directors, students, graduates andyoung scientists, who each year launch their companies on to the market. No better example o this than Daniel Borel, the ormer graduate o EPFL
who created Logitech the giant o the computing mouse more than 30years ago. And fnally, a spirit o openness, expressed by the magic waveso our agship building, the Rolex Learning Center : a new kind o libraryand living space or our students who come rom all over the world. An astonishing space where it eels good to work and socialize, andwhich stimulates the imagination.
This is just as well. Because youre going to need your creativity, as muchto complete your Master studies reputed as being demanding as tomake a good start to your proessional lie. Our teachers, who spendtheir time between their laboratories and lectures, are there to help youin this respect. Numerous services are at your disposal including valuablecoaching and advice programs. With your frst diploma in hand, you havean opportunity to build your uture. I you see EPFL as the next destination
or your Master studies, you can be assured that, in choosing Lausanneover other renowned destinations across the world, you are opting or avery particular philosophy, marked by uturism and humanism. A youthulspirit within a secular tradition.

scientific activity
EPFL is pursuing an ambitious strategy to oer the ideal conditions orundertaking undamental research on the rontiers o traditional scientifc
disciplines. Multi-disciplinary research projects are encouraged either bycreating new research institutes or by participating in National Centers oCompetence in Research (NCCR) and in international research programs. For instance, EPFL hosts the headquarters o the NCCRs in : Mobile Informationand Communication Systems, Quantum Photonics, Chemical Biology, Robotics
and the Synaptic Bases of Mental Diseases.
This innovative spirit coupled with the excellent inrastructure available hasattracted leading scientists rom around the world to EPFL, and resultedin a spectacular growth o its scientifc output: the number o scientifcpublications was multiplied by 3 during the past 10 years. At the same time, the growth in external fnancing demonstrates the institutional capacityo EPFL to attract projects on a competitive basis. Its no accident thatbetween 2007 and 2010 EPFL was awarded the highest number (24 !)
o competitive unds rom the European Research Council.

shaping the future through strategic research initiatives
Besides its commitment to developing transdisciplinary research, EPFLplays a key role in coordinating a range o high-profle, high-impactresearch initiatives.
For instance, the The Blue Brain Project is the frst comprehensive attemptto reverse-engineer the mammalian brain in order to understand brainunction and dysunction through detailed simulations. It started with apartnership between IBM and EPFL that had global impacts. The Blue Brain
Project draws computational resources rom a 56 TeraFlops BlueGene/Psupercomputer, using 16,384 processors or its simulation needs. It canperorm simultaneous simulations o up to 100,000 neurons, to connectneurons to orm biologically realistic microcircuits with up to 100 millionsynapses. Advanced visualization capabilities allow to image andanalyze neural microcircuit behavior.
an entrepreneuriaL spirit
Incubators and laboratories or small business and large multinationals,start-ups, investors and management training : EPFLs innovation ecosystemoers companies a ull range o options and an ideal environment to developand grow their business ideas. It is supported through our units : SRI (Service or Industry Relations) EPFLs Technology Transer Oce.
Alliance, the Industry Liaison Program or French-speaking academicinstitutions.
Support or start-up creations provided through the Innogrants. Partnerships with large international companies, including the installation
o corporate R&D activities on EPFLs Innovation Square.
technoLogies with an impact on our Lives
The 3D sound of the future. Christo Faller, a young scientist at theAudiovisual Communications Laboratory at EPFL, has ocused his eortsdeveloping algorithms or technologies that enhance human auditoryperception. e developed a new principle or surround sound coding thatis now applied to the new generation o audio coders, including MP3 Sur-round and the new MPEG Surround standard. Faller continued to developnew technologies or treating audio signals, spawning nearly 20 patents, some o which have been licensed and sold. For instance, he developeda technique or enhancing the MP3 audio ormat, giving this popular audiofle compression ormat an unprecedented level o amplitude and control. This innovative technology has been transerred to the market via theFraunhoer Institute, MP3s inventor, where it is being promoted orinternational standardization.
EPFLs incredible entrepreneurial spirit fnds its origins to the idea-generatingattitude that is cultivated in its students minds right rom the start.Since 1994, an average o 12 start-ups per year were created by EPFLsresearchers and students. Currently, there are over 100 start-up companiesat EPFLs Innovation Square.
