  • THE long-awaited works tocomplete the new motorway in theAlmanzora Valley could start inMay.

Ever since construction groundto a halt on the Almanzoramotorway, back in January 2011,

many voices have been raiseddemanding its completion.

The latest in a long line has beenthe Secretary General of the PSOE,Jose Luis Sanchez Teruel, who hasasked the Junta to pull their fingerout and expedite proceedings with

the EU, which has declared themotorway a Great Project.

The delegate for Development inAlmeria, Encarna Caparros, saidthe fact that they had not beenable to meet the deadlines set bythe department and start the work

was due to the problems they wereexperiencing with the originalconstruction company.

The UTE company was createdby investors for the motorwayproject. We are working to findsolutions so it is not put out to

tender, which, of course, would greatly lengthen thetime, said Caparros, whobelieves there will be asolution and that works, although she did not like togive deadlines, could beginafter Easter.

In fact, according toCaparros, during this timethe department hadcontinued working on theproject and during 2013spent 8 million onexpropriations for differentsections of the highway.

Caparros made it clearthat the priority was tofinish the Albox by-passand finalise the Cucador-LaConcepcion to A7 sections.

ARCH 19 is Saint Josephs Day andin Spain, its Fathers Day.

In 1948, a schoolteacher inDehesa de la Villa (north of

Madrid) decided to mark the day at her schoolto keep her students fathers happy, as some ofthem claimed to be jealous of Mothers Dayand wanted a day of their own.

The date was chosen to coincide with SaintJosephs Day, as she considered him the idealrole model for Christian fathers. The eventincluded mass, gifts for the fathers hand-madeby the girls, and a party with poetry, dancingand a play.

The idea became popular and wasannounced the following year in local paperswith which the teacher collaborated. In 1951, itwent national, thanks to a programme on thenational radio station.

It was promoted in 1953 by the manager atthe time of the Galerias Preciados store, JoseFernandez, and later by its rival, El CorteIngles, thanks to its manager Ramon Areces.

SPAINS government has warnedthat the country is still a terrortarget, a decade after the Madridtrain attack that killed 191people.

It was 10 years ago that Al-Qaeda style terrorists blew upfour commuter trains in Madrid inwhat is still seen as Spains worstterror attack, and InteriorMinister Jorge Fernandez Diazsaid Islamist extremists are still athreat.

The minister told Onda Ceroradio that intelligence on Al-Qaeda members and affiliateshad revealed that reference hasfrequently been made to AlAndalus, or Spain.

Clearly Spain forms part of thestrategic objectives of globaljihad. We are not the only onesbut we are in their sightsobviously, Fernandez Diaz said.

He added that the Spanishcounter-terrorist services alertlevel is at its second-highest

category, signifying a likely riskof attack. This level has notchanged in recent years and isidentical to that of most countriesin the region.

Diaz said that since the March

11, 2004, attack, 472 suspectedIslamic extremists have beenarrested. Following the 2004attack Spanish courts sentenced18 people for the shrapnel-filledbomb attack that killed 191

people and injured more than1,800 on four commuter trainsheading for Atocha Station,Madrid.

Basque separatist group ETAwas the prime suspect but Diaz

said the facts and the judicialprocess had since shown thatETA was not involved.

The seven main suspectscommitted suicide on April 3,2004, by blowing themselves upin an apartment near Madrid, killing a policeman in the blast.

Aside from the intelligenceservice, some 1,800 Spanishpolice and counter-terroristsecurity forces were devoted toconfronting the threat, accordingto Diaz.

He presided over a ceremonyin Madrid last week to presentcivilian awards to 365 of thoseaffected by the attacks.

A study by Spanish researchfacility Royal Elcano Institute said84 Islamists, all young men, wereconvicted for attack plots in Spainbetween 1996 and 2012, or diedin relation to such attacks.

Most of these Islamists werefirst-generation immigrants fromAlgeria, Morocco or Pakistan.

Holidaymakers visit many of theseplaces for their natural beauty, butwith drilling posing a threat to thisfactor it could have an impact ontourism.

Ecologists in Action also claimedthat sonic shocks used by thecompanies are a major threat tospecies including sea tortoises, whalesand dolphins.

Spain is hugely reliant on energyimports, buying in 99.9 per cent of itsoil and gas. It is for this reason thatthe government is keen to findresources locally.

The current conservative govern-ment is searching for new ways toreduce this dependence bydeveloping Spains own energyproduction.

Oil search setsoff alarm bells AS the row goes on aboutSpains proposed anti-

abortion legislation aCatholic bishop has calledabortion a silent holocaust.

Juan Antonio Reig Pla,the Bishop of Alcala de

Henares, said that since1985 when abortion wasmade legal in Spain, therehad been two millionabortions, many moredeaths than during theSpanish Civil War.

Justice Minister AlbertoRuiz Gallardon has beenpushing for the newregulations that woulddrastically curtail theopportunities for women toterminate pregnancies.

There would, if thelegislation is passed, be aban on abortion except forcases of rape or a seriousrisk to the mothers health. The bishop is sure to haveangered pro-abortionsupporters when he saidterminations are evidenceof a backwards society.

This new statement bythe Church comes againstthe backdrop of a contro-versial legal reform ofexisting abortion legisla-tion. If the changessponsored by JusticeMinister Alberto RuizGallardon are passed, thecurrent system will bereplaced with a ban onabortion save for the casesof rape or serious risk tothe mothers health.

EN years ago Spain suffered itsworst terrorist attack. OnMarch 11, 2004, people not

just in this country, but around theworld, were left numb with shock atthe TV images of the train bombingsthat shattered the lives of hundreds offamilies.

One hundred and ninety-one peopledied and 1,900 were injured - manywith life-changing injuries - in theindiscriminate attacks by al-Quaedainspired Islamist extremists. Tenbombs ripped through four of Madridscommuter trains, targeting thousandsof innocent civilians.

The results of the attack were far-reaching. A general election was heldjust three days later with theconservative PP party of Jose MariaAznar being swept from power.

That was not a result of the publicblaming the government, but rather oftheir disgust at what many saw asblatant political posturing. An attempt

to blame home-grown terrorists ETA todeflect attention away from the hugelyunpopular Iraq war back-fired at thevoting booths.

But it was a watershed in manyways for the Spanish public. From thatincident can be traced thedisenchantment with politics - orrather politicians - that has grown everstronger through corruption scandalafter scandal, a growing determinationnot to let the governing elite get awaywith it. It can be argued that thehorrifying March 11 attack, known inSpain as 11-M, was the catalyst for theseemingly endless list of criminal casesbrought against politicians of all hues. And in the long term that will onlystrengthen democracy in Spain.

It is a time of sombre remembrance,a time to recall those who died, butperhaps the most fitting memorial tothose who died and their families isthis: the anti-democratic terrorists lost.Democracy won.

ANA PATRICIA BOTIN is regarded asone of the worlds 50 most influentialbusinesswomen.

She is the daughter of bankerEmilio Botin, president of SantanderBank, and runs the groups UKsubsidiary. Despite her position, sheand other Santander executivesrecently visited branches to workincognito behind the counter and atthe other end of a call centretelephone.

They were following the exampleof Emilio Botin who has personallyvisited Santander branches, urgingmanagers to make more loansavailable.

Santander feels the need totransform the face its 183,000employees show to the 103 millionclients of its 14,000 branches. This ismore than an exercise in empathy,as the bank is striving to boostprofits after seven years of crisis.

A client in Britain discovered onlyafterwards the employee who hadrecommended Santanders onlinebanking app to her was in fact the

owners daughter. The young manwho told a bank clerk he would notbecome a Santander client until itwas more like ING didnt guess hewas speaking to Santander manag-ing director Enrique Garcia Candelas.

The business-owner who rang theSantander call centre about the non-arrival of a point of sale terminal forprocessing card payments will neverknow her complaint was handled by

the banks head of Technology andOperations, Jose Maria Fuster.

Executives from Germany, Poland,Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Brazilwho worked incognito all receivedthe same message, Santanderrevealed. Listening to clients, under-standing them and getting closer tothem is a priority, even though thebank would sometimes prefer not tohear what they are saying.

TRAFFIC congestion fell inSpain in 2013 as itseconomy continued tostruggle with highunemployment.

Data from trafficinformation and driverservices provider INRIXshows that Spain recordedan 8 per cent fall incongestion last year.

Spanish drivers spentapproximately eight fewerhours in traffic in 2013 thanin 2012, as the economycontracted and unemploy-ment was at around 26 percent.

This puts Spain in 11thplace in Europe for timespent in traffic in 2013,above only Hungary andPortugal.

NRIX analysed data from13 European countries andthe congestion landscapegenerally aligned closelywith each countryseconomic outlook.

According to the INRIXreport, those nations

struggling with highunemployment and low ornegative growth in 2013typically recorded lowertraffic congestion than in2012.

In that sense, trafficcongestion rose approxi-mately 6 per cent onaverage per quarter for thefinal three quarters of theyear in Europe, hinting atsigns of a possibleeconomy recovery.

Of the six Spanish citiesincluded in the report, allsix recorded falls in trafficcongestion from 2012 to2013.

The most congestedSpanish city was Bilbao, where drivers spentapproximately 24 hours intraffic in 2013, a fall of eighthours on the previousyears figures.

Madrid followed closelyin second, with Valenciarecording the largest fallin time spent incongestion.

Traffic in Spain falls aseconomy struggles

Santander executives learnto understand the message

ANA PATRICIA BOTIN: Temporary employee of the bank she runs.

THE economic recovery isgaining ground in Spain, butchallenges remain.

Spain is no longer on the listof European Union memberstates with excessive economicimbalances, but has been askedto follow a set of demands toaddress consistent problems.

In the conclusions emergingfrom the in-depth reviewscarried out into 17 memberstates economies, theEuropean Commission (EC)considers that a significantadjustment has taken placeover the last year and that oncurrent trends, imbalanceswould continue to abate overtime.

However, while this is thebasis to conclude thatimbalances in Spain are nolonger excessive, theCommission stresses that risksare still present.

    It said that Spains current

account has turned intosurplus, as a result of acombination of importcompression and strongexports, supported bycompetiveness gain.

These positive developmentshave led to a strong return ofconfidence, seen in the returnof foreign capital inflows and arise in business and consumerconfidence.

Yet, the EC notes the veryhigh stock of private and publicdebt, both domestic andexternal, poses risks for growthand financial stability.

    The adjustment of private

sector balance sheets isadvancing, but unemploymentat alarming levels and fallingincomes have limited the paceof deleveraging of households, that is, the percentage of debtin their balance sheet.

The Commission considersthat the challenge for Spain isto ensure that deleveraging willgo hand in hand with positivecredit flows to financiallyhealthy borrowers.

Removing hindrances in thefunctioning of the product andfinancial markets and efficientinsolvency procedures, the ECcontinues, could reduce thedrag on growth fromdeleveraging.

Finally, the Commission saidthat Spain should meet the2014 fiscal deficit target thanksto the improving macro-economic prospects, eventhough the 2013 target mayhave been missed.

Challenges still remain towards therecovery of the Spanish economy

Oh, come to think of it,on top of my mortgage, billsand travel plans, my bikewas stolen last month, so Ihave been trying to putaside a few quid to buy anew one!

And I have been trying to

save for an event that istaking place later this year.So I suppose there is somefinancial concern loomingover me at the moment. But is it this concern thathas me scoffing chocolateslike there is no tomorrow?

According to the newsreport, financial trouble canbe a cause of obesity inwomen, due in part to thespecific hormones femalesrelease when stressed. Abody under a certainamount of stress releases a

hormone called cortisol, which triggers hunger in thebrain. And this is thought tobe a contributing factor, since women see financialtrouble as stressful.

Men, however, dont haveto worry about their waist-lines, because the reportstates men view moneytroubles as a challenge toovercome, which wouldrelease adrenaline in theirbodies - a hormone thatactually curbs hunger.

Nonsense, the lot of it!Girls if you are stressed out, perhaps behind on yourrent or bills, and youhappen to pig out once in awhile - its no big deal.Being smart about moneyhas absolutely nothing todo with hormones andmore to do with planning, budgeting and usingcommon sense.

  • HolidayingBrits deservea monumentI AM writing for myself but I amcertain that I also representmany local businesses in MijasPueblo. We continuously discussthe way local politicianscongratulate themselves aboutthe contracts signed withJapanese tour operators.

The figures as to how manyJapanese tourists visit Mijas(100,000 last year) might beright, but the truth about whatthey spend and how we allbenefit is a complete lie.

Yes, the Japanese visit bars, restaurants and shops, but onlythe ones where they are told togo.

Distributing brochures isbanned in Mijas, so before theyarrive Japanese tourists aregiven a photocopied map and aroute with places of interest tovisit and take photos.

In between are the shopswhere they should makepurchases (because the rest arenot good shops and we mightcheat them?).

Recommended restaurantsand bars are not on the mapbecause these have contractswith the tour operators.

It just happens that all therecommended businessesbelong to local politicians, localguides and their friends.

They recently erected amonument to all the Japanesevisiting Mijas. What about all theother nationalities that keeplocal businesses going? Whatabout the British who reallysupport the Costa del Sol? Theyspend the most, they are jollyand the most polite. Theydeserve a monument!

Light fantasticI HAVE just been looking at thepicture of the Lions Clubpresident handing over 500 tothe mayor of Rojales to helpfeed homeless and needyfamilies in the area.

Sometimes I wonder whethermayors and councils are doingenough for these unfortunatepeople.

For example, there is a lovelysports centre in Calle Dr QuilesMora adjacent to the NorwegianSchool in Quesada. At one endthere are seven full-size streetlights and six at the other thatcome on at 6pm and go off at6am.

    The caretaker arrives at 8am

to unlock the gates to the sportscentre and locks them again at8pm. Thirteen lamps are alightfor 10 hours a night, six nights aweek, and 12 hours on Sundayswhen the centre is closed.

In total that is 792 hours aweek and in a short month likeFebruary works out at 3,168hours when the sports centre islocked up with no access. Itwould be interesting to know thecost in euros.

Lessons to belearntSO FAR even Herculean effortshavent been able to put a dentin Spains stubbornly cruelunemployment rate of morethan 25 per cent.

In last weeks annual State ofthe Nation address, presidentMariano Rajoy once againpromised to lower itconsiderably. Heres hoping, although dont hold your breath!

I remember how angry, frustrated Americans com-plained bitterly about the 7.8 percent jobless rate Obamainherited when he becameCommander-in-Chief. It tookhim five years to lower it to thepresent almost tolerable 6.7 percent with hopes of generatingmore and better jobs in the not-too-distant future.

So we can imagine Spainsplight on being saddled with itslengthy (seven years andrunning) 25 per centunemployment rate.

What I didnt know until lastweek was the relatively veryfavourable economic situation inLatin America and theCaribbean. According to a TimeMagazine article entitled Thecommittee to save Mexico, theunemployment rate now standsat 4.76 per cent, down from 5per cent in December 2012when Enrique Pea Nietobecame president. The averagejobless rate in Latin America andthe Caribbean countries in 2013was 6.3 per cent.

Maybe President Rajoy couldemploy some Mexican orCaribbean economic advisers.

Service versusservantHAVING just returned from theUS I can report that tipping addsmuch to the experience ofeating out, as much as 30 percent in some cases.

Perhaps thats why so manyAmericans eat takeaways, whereit is almost acceptable not to tip.

I had managed to tip a total of$40 before I reached the insideof my hotel room, so is it worthit?

If you are one of those peoplewho craves attention, likes to benoticed, enjoys asking to alter adish that a famous chef haslovingly prepared for you oreven to change your mind onceits already arrived at the tablethen there will be No problemat all, and is there anything elsewe can do for you?

So yes, for you a personalservant may well be worth it. Forme, not so much.

In the UK memories still festerover the treatment of servants inthe past and waiting staff willnot tolerate difficult customers,no matter what the request.

Wave, click your fingers, ask aquestion or complain aboutanything and you will definitelybe given bad service or evenignored.

Unless you look potentially likea good tipper (yes, you can tell)then youll always get badservice, but then the staff wontbe able to complain about thelack of tips will they?

undermine our customs andculture by targeting our mostvulnerable, namely our children.

Every week we read or hearof some action taken in variousschools in the UK. Not allowedto fly the British flag, porkbanned from menus. Halal meatbeing insisted on, and evenmale/female segregation. Thislatest offering is even moresinister as it emanated from oneof their own. The Muslimheadmistress who was ousted ina smear campaign concocted byIslamic extremists, simplybecause she was considered toomoderate. So much forintegration!

only suits their attire, but willautomatically provide them withall the ethnic opportunities theyappear so desperately to desire?

There is only one finaloutcome to their efforts. TheBritish will never surrender theirculture and customs to thesepeople. If it continues unabatedit will lead to war in the streets.Have no doubt about this. Afterhorrendous loss of life anddestruction of vast swathes ofour infrastructure, the British willwin, and they will rid themselvesof these fanatics.

It is disgraceful that whilesuccessive governmentscontinue to bury their heads inthe sand and appease these

people, the average British Joehas to simply wait and worryuntil it all kicks off. There arealready no-go areas where ourpolice are afraid to enter andwhich operate under ShariaLaw; a situation that was so outthere some short years ago, itwas scoffed at by a number ofour esteemed leaders. What dothey think is actually going on inthese areas? Well, Ill tell you, none of em are planning tocelebrate British culturalsuccesses or events.

How can we allow these areasto exist in our towns and cities? They are an affront to anycitizen who has ancestors whofought and died to preserve ourunique culture and democracy.Lets just hope the British secretservices have infiltrated them allenough to give fair warningbefore the halal manure finallyhits the fan.

UK TV ROUTER is a product that wasstarted mid-June 2013 with the intentionof using TV on demand facilities from theUK via Sky+ HD boxes & Humax Freesatwith Freetime. These include BBCiPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD, Demand FIVE.

UK TV Router also allows you toconnect iPads, PCs, smart phones, etc,all of which will appear to be in the UK,thus allowing Sky Go, Live TV, iPlayer, etc.

The UK TV Router is a productoriginally developed by Base Satellite toallow our customers to get the mostfrom their existing TV systems.

We are a family-run businessoperating in Spain, with a very goodreputation since 2000.

Heres a selection of ourcustomers own reviews:

Good decision. I am well pleased with therouter and it was very easy to install. I also got OnDemand - again easy to install." (TORREVIEJA)

"I am really impressed with this router. Itarrived two days after ordering and took onlyminutes to set up after which it has performed

perfectly. In addition to providing the full range ofOn Demand services on the TV, it has improvedwi-fi reception around the house as it has astronger signal than my Belkin router and it worksseamlessly with the iPad to provide live TV via SkyGo, use the Apps for Sky+ and Sky Sports andwatch catch up TV." (ALICANTE)

"After seeing all of the various adverts in thenewspapers for boxes to receive UK TV, I wentonto the uktvrouter.com website and wasimmediately impressed with the information andthe professional way that it was laid out. Idecided to bite the bullet and ordered the routerwith the years subscription.

I already have a SkyHD+ wi-fi receiver, whenthe TV router arrived just three days later it wasan absolute doddle to set it up wirelessly to mySky box. Really impressed with the service andthanks Paul for your prompt reply to my query.

I will certainly recommend your company. Itsnice to actually get something that does exactlywhat it says on the box!! Even more importantly, the wife is back watching Corrie and EastEndersand my life is smooth again." (TORREMOLINOS)

"I cant give this product enough praise. Ihave had mine since October 2013 andwouldnt be without it.

I have connected my iPad, laptop, smart TVand sat box. Its great, I can watch Sky Go onthe iPad, buy lottery tickets etc and when thechannels went off in January we didnt noticeany difference.

All the BBC and ITV channels are stillavailable via the internet on whatever medium Ichoose. Sky On Demand is great as we chooseour viewing for the day and its waiting for us towatch on the recorder." (ALMERIA)
