Page 1: Evaluation Question 2

A comparison table that compares characters from my media film and other films of a similar genre or style.

The Surgeon [Villain] (Blank Canvas)

The Subject [Victim] (Blank Canvas)

Dr Heiter [Villain] (The Human Centipede)

Both characters are obviously doctors because they both wear Doctors Lab coats which are vindictive of cleanliness and medicinal practices. The surgeon in Blank Canvas wears a mask which immediatly shows he is a surgeon and not a normal doctor, otherwise we would be unsure as to his specific medical practice. Dr Heiter on the other hand performs surgeries which show his character even though it is not immediately obvious. Blank canvas has a slight blue tint to add an unnatural feel to the shot, yet The human centipede keeps the colours natural, although it does use lighting to emphasise the shadow of Dr heiter. Both shots have a similar look and atmosphere. Both are very clinical looking environments, with both characterse wearing white coats and standing in a white environment.

Both of these shots are very different as the victim here is in a close up shot and Dr heiter is seen in a medium close up shot. There is a stark contrast in the victims face with the blood, whereas Dr heiter has no defining contrast to his surroundings.

Hannibal Lecter [Villain] (Silence of the lambs)

These two characters are very easy to compare as they are both wearing masks. In Blank Canvas we chose to give The Surgeon a mask because it gives a bit of mystery to the character and withholds some of his identity from the audience while giving us a clear sense of the character. If we look at the shot of Hannibal we can see that it is a close up of his face, we can see detail in his expression and in his eyes especially. This gives Hannibal a strong connection with the audience through his expression, the intensity shows us he is a

When comparing these two images we immediately notice that they are very similar. Both shots are close ups of the characters faces. The most noticeable features in the frame are the eyes of both characters due to the fact they are the only detailed part of the face exposed. But this is really where the similarities end. The Subject is showing fear in his eyes, his emotion is of pain and sadness. This was our opening shot which also would scare the audience

powerful character. Contrasting this in our piece, we have used a low angle medium shot. This means we cannot see explicit detail in the face of The Surgeon; and yet we still understand that The Surgeon has power as he is tall in the frame and is centred appropriately. There is also a strong contrast in colour in both images. The image of Hannibal contains a lot of orange and brown, and there are detailed textures, the orange connotes prison and entrapment, the detailed textures of the mask and clothes connote a complex character. In Blank Canvas there is a blue filter over the image, stripping the image of any strong colours. This gives the still an unnatural feeling and makes the audience feel like the character is cold and simple. There are no detailed textures to be seen which shows that the character is simple with one objective and there are no distractions.

slightly which would create a link between the characters feelings and the feelings of the audience when The Subject gets introduced. Hannibal Lecter on the other hand is giving off an air of anger and hatred directed at the audience which makes the audience feel uncomfortable, and not relate to Hannibal but relate more to a victimised character.

Frankenstein’s Monster [Victim] (Frankinstein)

N/A Frankenstein’s Monster was the mad vision of Dr Frankenstein to create a perfect human being. Frankenstein’s monster is very similar to The Subject; his skin looks like bandages. Just like The Subject; Frankenstein’s Monster has a look of fear and pain in his eyes which is a common feature of the victim. However, our character The Subject has bandages on creating an air of mystery to his character, we do not know what has been done to him, whereas with Frankenstein’s Monster we know exactly what happened.

Evaluation Question 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

We created our characters so they would fit into two groups. The Surgeon into the ‘Mad scientist/doctor’ group and The Subject into the ‘Unwilling Victim’ group.
