Biological & Physical Sciences:ESU science students have won 46 awards at the Kansas Academy of Sciences in the past 10 meetings for poster and oral presentations — more than twice as many than any other university in Kansas. (2016)

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology:Junior biochemistry and molecular biology major Chris Alderman won the 2016 Great Plains Honors Council Dennis Boe Award. The Great Plains region includes Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. (2016)

Business:Brent Wilson, a 2016 graduate and management major, was quarterback on the Emporia State football team and the recipient of the prestigious Ken B. Jones Award as the MIAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year and a finalist for the Harlon Hill Award. (2016)

Chelsie Renee Dieker made the top score in Kansas for the January/February 2016 CPA exam. Chelsie received both a BSB – Accounting and an MBA with an accounting concentration from ESU. (2016)

Alumna Linda Sinnett, CFO at Design Resources Inc., was selected as a 2015 Women Who Mean Business by the Kansas City Business Journal. (2015)

Debate:National Debate Tournament and Cross Examination Debate Association Champions, the only time a school has won both national titles in the same year. (2013)

English/Journalism:Senior English major Ariel Cooley was the 2016 Kansas College Journalist of the Year.

The ESU English Department produces the Sigma Tau Delta Review and the Sigma Tau Delta Rectangle, publications of the International English Society.

Music:Pianist and ESU alumna Angel Yang won the Fifth Music Teachers National Competition from the National Music Education Department of China. (2015)

ESU alum Jason Sickel, a vocal music instructor at Blue Valley North High School, was named the 2017 Kansas Teacher of the Year.

Psychology:Psychology graduate Eric Lloyd was inaugurated into Sigma Tau Gamma Undergraduate Hall of Fame, which recognizes 10 outstanding graduating seniors from across the nation. (2016)

School of Library and Information Management (SLIM):ESU alum Greg Michells was awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library Service for his library from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The award is the highest a library may achieve. (2016)

Nursing:ESU’s nursing program graduates have a licensure exam passage rate of more than 90 percent compared to the Kansas average of 80 percent over the past six years. (2016)

Zach Mandell did a Summer Nursing Externship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and has accepted a job there. (2016)

Emporia State students won four first-place state awards at the Kansas State Nurses Association state convention including Image of Nursing, Community Nursing, Break Through Nursing and School of Excellence in Nursing. (2016)

An Emporia State nursing student was named president of the National Student Nurses’ Association, a 60,000-member student organization dedicated to the professional development of nursing students. (2016)

Theatre: The Kennedy Center Festival selected ESU’s theatre program to present its production, “The Treehouse Effect,” a play written by ESU alumni. (2016)

Senior Nathan Short was one of 60 students from around the world in The Open Jar Institute in New York. Selected students are given one-on-one training with Broadway professionals. (2016)

The Teachers College:Three of the last seven Kansas State Superintendents of the Year are Emporia State alumni: Tom Trigg (2011), Marlin Berry (2013) and Sue Givens (2017).

The Professional Development School received the Exemplary Professional Achievement Award from the National Association of Professional Development Schools. (2015)

Emporia State alumni Michelle Kelly and Denise Scribner received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government for K-12 mathematics and science teaching. (2016)

No. 1 bestselling-author James Patterson funds 16 full-ride scholarships for elementary and secondary education majors. The first group to receive these are seniors at ESU this year.

The Health Promotion program was recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a top Personal Training Program for undergraduates. (2016)

The Teachers College graduates received seven out of 32 Kansas Horizon Awards for Excellence awarded to new teachers. (2016)

ESU alumna, Kristi Dixon, was named the 2016-17 Outstanding School Counselor of the Year for the state of Kansas.

Instructional Design and Technology students Julie LaCombe and Milton Knopp won the Association for Educational Communications & Technology Design and Development Competition in Las Vegas. ESU IDT students have been finalists in this international competition seven of the past nine years. (2016)

Athletics:The Lady Hornets basketball team has made it to the Sweet 16 a total of 13 times since 1998 and every year in the past five years.

The women’s track team had the sixth-highest GPA in the nation last year at 3.53 as 36 of the 42 active members of the roster maintained a 3.00 or better cumulative GPA at the end of the school year.

Emporia State Athletics is ranked in the top 20 in producing NCAA Division II Academic All-Americans by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) since 2000 with 25 honorees in the last 17 years.

For the first time in school history, Emporia State hosted a NCAA Division II Playoff game on Jones Field at Welch Stadium. The Hornet football team won the game against Minnesota-Duluth with a score of 59-26. (2016)

Emporia State Men’s 4x400m relay team earned All-American honors. (2016)

Volleyball/track athlete Shayla Cotman was selected for NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum. (2016)

Emporia State Baseball made its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. It was their 11th time in 13 years. (2016)

HORNETS FOR THE COMMON GOODESU athletes ranked 14th in the nation in service hours across all NCAA divisions and fourth in the nation in Division II. (2015)

ESU has the only masters in Forensic Science in Kansas, which was developed with the input of all of the major crime laboratories in the State of Kansas and the Kansas City Metro area.

ESU is home to the Memorial to Fallen Educators and the National Teachers Hall of Fame. The NTHF is the only facility of its kind dedicated to recognizing career teachers and the memorial is the only memorial dedicated to honoring fallen educators.

ESU sponsors many STEM outreach programs, including Sonja Kovalesky Mathematics Day for junior women in high school and Sí Se Puede Math Day for middle school Hispanic students.

ESU is establishing the Kansas Masonic Literacy Center with a $4 million pledge from the Kansas Masonic Foundation. (2016)

ESU has the only Bachelor’s in engraving in the world, and the only Bachelor’s in glass-blowing in Kansas.

ESU has earned Tree Campus USA designation three years in a row from the Arbor Day Foundation. (2016)

The League of American Bicyclists recognized Emporia State University with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly University (BFUSM) award, joining over 150 colleges and universities from across the country. (2016)
