Windows Server 2003provides significantenhanced functionalitythat Exchange 2003

takes advantage of:
Outlook HTTP accessIIS 6.0 and Windows RPCProxy service inWindows Server 2003enable communicationbetween Outlook 2003and Exchange Server2003 by means of HTTP.Outlook 2003 users cansynchronize directly withthe server runningExchange Server 2003over a HTTP or HTTPSconnection.
Internet protocolsupportIIS 6.0 providesExchange with itssupport for manycommon Internet accessprotocols that increasethe flexibility of theoperating system, suchas HTTP, Post OfficeProtocol version 3(POP3), InternetMessage Access Protocolversion 4 (IMAP4), andSimple Mail TransferProtocol (SMTP).
Active DirectoryWindows provides ActiveDirectory, upon whichExchange depends foruser information, mailrouting information, user authentication, andLDAP read and writefunctions.
Support for clusteringExchange Server 2003provides better supportfor clustering, whichenables high availabilityof a company’sinfrastructure.Customers can choose torun up to 8-nodeclusters, with at leastone passive node, whenrunning Exchange 2003on Windows Server

2003, EnterpriseEdition. (In Windows2000 Advanced Server, clustering was limited totwo nodes, one activeand one passive; if acompany chose to runWindows 2000Datacenter Server, clustering was limited tofour nodes.)
Volume Shadow CopyserviceThis and Virtual DiskService are part of astorage framework thatprovides heterogeneousinteroperation of storagehardware, storagesoftware, andapplications. Exchange2003 writes to theVolume Shadow Copyservice on WindowsServer 2003, reducingdramatically the backupand restore times forExchange messagingenvironments. Thisenables IT departmentsto support greaternumbers of users perserver and reduces thetotal number of serversrunning Exchange intheir environment.

What are the SupportedFE/BE scenarios? (i.e.E2003 FE with E2k BEetc.)
It is not sufficient tosimply upgrade front-endservers to Exchange2003 for users to get thenew interface.
You must upgrade back-end servers to Exchange2003 as well
Interface matrix
Ex2000 FE + Ex2000 BE =Ex2000 OWAEx2003 FE + Ex2000 BE =Ex2000 OWAEx2000 FE + Ex2003 BE =Not supported (AGprotected)Ex2003 FE + Ex2003 BE =Ex2003 OWA
Ability to Reply andForward to Messages andPosts in Public Folders isonly enabled when theclient is using a front-end server. Forms-basedauthentication (FBA) isfunctional fordeployments where theFE is Exchange 2003, butthe mailbox is still onExchange 2000.However, sessiontimeouts are handledmuch better if the BE arealso Exchange 2003

How do I configure theRecovery StorageGroup?
In Exchange 2003, thereis a new feature calledthe “Recovery StorageGroup” (RSG). This is aspecial instance of ESE(a 5th instance) whichcan be spun up toprovide:a. Item/Folder/Mailboxlevel restore without theneed for a spare serverb. “Dial tone” (blankmailbox) support if youlose a database and needto get the users quicklyup and running forsend/receive
To create the RSG, gointo Exchange 2003 ESM,right-click on your serverobject and choose tocreate a new RecoveryStorage Group.Once the RSG exists, youcan add a database to it(any MDB from anyStorage Group from anyserver inside the sameAdmin Group). Then, useNTBackup or similar torestore a backup into theRSG. Now, you can useExMerge to extract thedata from the RSG andmerge it into theproduction database (forscenario a.), or you can

Under Exchange 5.5 Icouldn’t restore asingle mailbox without3rd party products. With Exchange 2003, isit any easier to restorea single mailbox orback up a singlemailbox?
Yes and no. UnderExchange 2003, amailbox is not deletedimmediately when aWindows account isdeleted. Althoughrestores have beengreatly improved withthe new RecoveryStorage Group (RSG) andthe Volume Shadow CopyService, there is no builtin mechanism forbacking up a singleExchange mailbox. Thiswould still require a 3rdparty brick level backuputility.06
Can I back up the EXIFSdrive using NT Backupor another backupapplication?
You can, but you will besad. Do NOT back up theEXIFS drive of anExchange 2003 server. Itcan result in messagesand attachments beinginaccessible via theOutlook client.

Servers?
No, the property sheetsof the 2003 servers willappear as read-only. Youshould avoid usingExchange 2000 ESM inenvironments whereExchange 2003 isinstalled. Not only willyou not be able to accessnew Exchange 2003features, but there isalso the risk of damageto new objects thatExchange 2000 does notunderstand. If you mustcontinue to useExchange 2000 ESM,apply the latestExchange 2000 SP3 roll-up to your Adminworkstation(s) –http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E247C80E-8AFA-4C2A-96B3-F46D1808C790&displaylang=en
The roll-up includessupport for themsExchMinAdminVersionattribute (also known asESM versioning).Essentially, eachExchange object in theAD is stamped with aminimum admin version. If ESM detects that thedata value is greaterthan the version of ESMrunning, it will not allowedits to that object.

I created a user in ADUsers and Computers, but in the Exchangesystem manager itdoesn’t appear underMailbox Store |Mailboxes. What did Ido wrong?
Probably nothing. Amailbox will not appearunder Mailbox Store |Mailboxes until eithersomeone has logged intothe mailbox or themailbox has received amail message. Someadministrators send awelcome message to amailbox shortly after ithas been created, whichwould cause it to appear.

mailbox. You can createa disabled user object, associate a mailbox withit, and then grantanother user object‘receive as’ and ‘sendas’ permissions to thatmailbox.
14
What is the differencebetween ‘receive as’and ‘send as’?
‘Receive as’ allows auser object to open amailbox. ‘Send as’allows a user to send outa mail message as themailbox that has beenopened.
15
How do I restrict a useror domain from sendingmail to my users?
First, add the address ordomain you wish to filterto the Filtering Tab ofthe Message DeliveryGlobal Settings. Next, you need to apply thefilter to the SMTP virtualserver you wish to filter.(Administrative Group |Server | Protocols |SMTP | <SMTP VirtualServer> | Properties |Advanced | <select theIP address for which youwish to enable filtering>| Edit | Apply Filter).Normally, you would onlywant to apply messagefiltering to the borderSMTP servers (serversthat communicatedirectly with Externalservers).16

The compression gain isdictated by the messageformat andattachment(s) type.Because the compressionis performed at the RPClevel, all message data iscompressed.
Plain text and HTMLmessages usuallycompress between 60%and 80% (on the wiresaving)
Rich-text (RTF)messages usuallycompress up to 20% (onthe wire saving)
