Executive summary.
In consultation with the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, a short survey was developed surrounding future sport and
recreation infrastructure and made available through the YourSAy consultation hub. The survey was available for completion
from the 2nd April until the 7th May during which we received N=2052 completed surveys. It is important to note that there was a
high level of self-selection bias due to the survey methodology and therefore the sample cannot be considered representative
of the wider general public. As a result of the self- selection, respondents to this survey will likely be more interested in sport
and recreation facilities than the wider public.
The vast majority (89%) of respondents had been active in the three months prior to being surveyed. In line with findings from
Ausplay 2018, the most common activity was walking, with 45% of respondents involved. Cycling (23%), running (18%) and
swimming (18%) were the next most popular activities with the first traditionally organised sport being Netball with 9% of
respondents. This highlights the seemingly unstructured, recreational nature of most respondents’ physical activities. Older
participants are less likely to participate in many activities, with the exceptions of lawn bowls and gardening.
When asked to rate the importance of various sport and recreational facilities, this inclination towards recreational activities
continues with parks, reserves and playing fields the most important facilities (72% of respondents consider important), which
was on par with walking trails and paths (72% of respondents consider important). Interestingly, ovals are considered the 3rd
most important facilities, despite AFL being the 11th most common sport or activity and cricket the 19th, undertaken by 6% and
3% of respondents respectively. This suggests that those who are not involved with oval related sports still place a high
importance on the facilities and attests to their versatility. Similarly, indoor recreation and sports centres are considered
important by 56% of respondents, likely due to their versatility and multi-purpose nature.
A total of 13% of respondents were not sure or couldn’t articulate whether there were any gaps in current levels of provision.
Those who could, often mentioned indoor facilities (11%) whether it be an indoor pool, basketball court, soccer facilities or
simply “indoor facilities”. This was often reasoned as a solution to poor weather or inadequate surfaces.
5
Regarding specific sporting or recreational infrastructure projects to be developed, aquatic facilities (12%) received the most responses. This could include more popular facilities such as pools to more niche facilities like areas to kayak. The second most common response to this question surrounded upgrades and improvements to existing facilities (11%).
When asked what stops respondents from utilising sport and recreational facilities, the poor condition of facilities was the
largest barrier to entry, with almost half of respondents (46%) indicating that this stops them from attending sport and
recreation facilities. This was closely followed by distance (40%). Other major barriers included crowded facilities and limited
car parking (25% and 24% respectively). While regional participants were more likely to report distance as a barrier (49%), they
were less likely than their metropolitan counterparts to report crowded facilities (18%) or limited car parking (14%). On average,
metropolitan respondents reported 2.2 barriers per person, while regional respondents reported an average of 1.9 barriers per
respondent, this is significantly fewer.
As shown in respondents answers to a range of agreement statements, the social aspects of sport and recreation are
important to the majority of respondents (74%) and while many respondents would like to see the creation of more sport and
recreation facilities near them (66%), a slightly higher proportion would like to see existing facilities updated (71%).
When asked to articulate what government should be considering when it plans for facilities, the most common response was
that there is consideration of what there is a demand for, while allowing for future trends in needs (what will there be a demand
for?). The next most common response surrounded being family friendly or inclusive to everyone whether they are elderly,
children, amateur, professional, able or disabled. These considerations were followed by accessibility and affordability. Similar
to findings surrounding importance, versatility (practicality and multi-purpose) emerged as a fairly dominant theme to be
considered.

Background. On 10 March 2019 the Minister for Recreation Sport and Racing
announced the development of the South Australian Recreation
and Sport Infrastructure Plan. The Plan will investigate the
facilities we must build and upgrade to support them. Including
recreational facilities such as trails and parks, community
infrastructure through to major venues.
A key component of developing the plan is Community
engagement. The engagement included an open survey
available for completion by any member of the public through the
Government's consultation hub - YourSAy. This report will cover
the findings from this YourSAy consultation.
Targeted consultation will then focus on the recreation and sport
community through State associations and their network of clubs
and members, the general public and local government through
a major Statewide consultation process through to the end of
August 2019.
10
Methodology.
To meet the objectives of the research and gain a clear picture of the
needs and community satisfaction with facility provision, a short
survey was developed in consultation with the Office for Recreation
Sport & Racing (ORSR). The survey was then made available via the
YourSAy consultation hub and promoted via Social media. The survey
was available for completion from the 2nd April until the 7th May during
which we received N=2052 completed surveys. ORSR also emailed
an invitation to the survey to its existing email contacts.
To help gain the perspectives of those who were not a member of a
sport or recreation club or organisation the list was also distributed to
an online panel. A detailed breakdown of completes can be found
below.
Responses have been reported at an overall level. Considering the
above methodology, it is important to note that there is a high level of
self-selection bias and the sample cannot be considered
representative of the wider general public. As a result of the self-
selection, respondents to this survey will likely be more interested in
sport and recreation facilities than the wider public.

Throughout this report, the survey results are presented at an overall level.
For questions involving scales, mean scores have been used to compare between sub-groups (an example of a mean score is shown below). A mean
score is the average rating that any particular group gave for that measure. All scales throughout the report use an 11 point scale, from 0 up to 10 and
scores are grouped into categories, e.g. 0-1 Not at all satisfied, 2-3 Not satisfied, 4-6 Neutral, 7-8 Satisfied and 9-10 Very satisfied.
Significance testing has been conducted between sub-groups of interest. Tests have been undertaken at a 95% confidence level. If there is a
statistically significant difference, we can be confident that this difference has not occurred by chance, rather that it reflects a genuine difference
among that group compared with the other group (or net of the other groups). Significance testing does not inform the reader as to the degree of a
difference. We take an exception rule to reporting on significant differences – that means we only show a difference where it is significant and where a
difference is not indicated, it doesn’t exist. Where a significant difference has been found, it has been indicated by an arrow.

Members were more likely to take part in a range of activities including cycling, running, going to the gym, netball and others.
Gender differences also emerged with men more likely to participate in cycling, soccer, football, lawn bowls, golf and others.
Regional respondents, perhaps more limited in their access to facilities were less likely to participate in a range of activities.
