MUSE, Museum of Science in Trento, made by Renzo Piano.

Page 6: EXplora MUseum

The project started when the MUSE was in the making.

Page 7: EXplora MUseum

We only had draft of the inside.

Page 8: EXplora MUseum

MUSE is a big open space full of interactive and visual elements.

Page 9: EXplora MUseum

MOMA New York, 2013Directors and Curators believe people stand stills in front of art.

Page 10: EXplora MUseum

But people use technology every time, everyday. We call them millennials.

Page 11: EXplora MUseum

And this is what museum offers to millennials…

Page 12: EXplora MUseum

Some museum has an app, but most of the time it’s just an audio player on a better device.

Page 13: EXplora MUseum

Louvre use Nintendo, it’s a fantastic experience, but quite exclusive and expansive.

Page 14: EXplora MUseum

Meanwhile at MUSE curators where creating great contents. We urge to create a stunning guide.

Page 15: EXplora MUseum

Tablet devices were the best choice, easy to use and a big screen for all ages.

Page 16: EXplora MUseum

But how do you use the tablets in a museum? How do you search or get relevant informations?

Page 17: EXplora MUseum

113

Most museums use “numbers”. But seriously, no, we couldn’t use them.

Page 18: EXplora MUseum

QR Code looks “technological” but they are really bad looking and not really easy to use.

Page 19: EXplora MUseum

In complex environment it’s really challenging to scan a QR with a phone.

Page 20: EXplora MUseum

Augmented reality works, but it require a “clean” environment.

Page 21: EXplora MUseum

But we didn’t want people walking around like this.

Page 22: EXplora MUseum

We believe technology is good when it disappear.

Jony Ive, VP Apple

Page 23: EXplora MUseum

And today AR technology can’t solve the problem in this complex environment.

Page 24: EXplora MUseum

Not even Google Glass!

Page 25: EXplora MUseum

Contextual Awareness

The solution to the problem was already in our pocket.

Page 26: EXplora MUseum

A smartphone knows our position.

Page 27: EXplora MUseum

Position is used to filter searches when we look for something.

Page 28: EXplora MUseum

In a museum we have thousands of information we need to filter.

Page 29: EXplora MUseum

If we know the floor, we can filter them and shows only the most relevant.

Page 30: EXplora MUseum

If we are more precise with the position we can offer the 4 most relevant items around a visitor.

Page 31: EXplora MUseum

Applying the same rules to the guide UI and visitors has 4 items around him.

Page 32: EXplora MUseum

We don’t push content, we let visitor decide what he want to see.

Page 33: EXplora MUseum

To get position we used WIFI technology, but it turned out to be inaccurate and slow.

Page 34: EXplora MUseum

iBeacons, instead, proved to be reliable and fast to provide “proximity” information.

Page 35: EXplora MUseum

We placed iBeacons everywhere close to a content.

Page 36: EXplora MUseum

Even one inside of a skull.

Page 37: EXplora MUseum

And this is what we managed to do.

Page 38: EXplora MUseum

The guide is available at MUSE since July 2014.

Page 39: EXplora MUseum

Reaction was awesome: this 2 kids are reading info about the tree in front of them (real photo).

Page 40: EXplora MUseum

People use the iPad but keep the focus on the museum. It’s a companion, not a distraction.

Page 41: EXplora MUseum

They use the iPad to undertand and get inspired by the museum.

Page 42: EXplora MUseum

Guide

With iBeacons contents appears on the screen when the visitor is in the right place.

Page 44: EXplora MUseum

We integrated Google Analytics to understand visitor behaviors.

Page 45: EXplora MUseum

And we enabled realtime user tracking to have a better idea of what’s hot or not in the museum.

Business Intelligence softwares combines analytics to tickets sold.

Page 56: EXplora MUseum

At the end of the visits, visitors receive a link to their experience at the museum.

Page 57: EXplora MUseum

Why choosing an iPad instead of a cheaper solution?

Page 58: EXplora MUseum

Because of the ecosystem.

Page 59: EXplora MUseum

We have games about dinosaurs on the App Store.

Page 60: EXplora MUseum

Amazing interactive books.

Page 61: EXplora MUseum

Tools to be creative.

Page 62: EXplora MUseum

Even music playlist curated by the same people who made the museum.

Page 63: EXplora MUseum

With today’s information overload we need content curators, people we trust

that provide relevant information for us.

Page 64: EXplora MUseum

Grazie!
