Soft Decoration: A New Direction of Interior Design
A space is not only a place where we live, but also a harbour for our souls. A bit of wisdom is in-
dispensable to interior design in that a good design could vitalise life by integrating itself into it. It
even goes beyond that to approach our souls and become an integral part of our spiritual pursuit.
Interior soft decoration is an important way to show wisdom in interior design. Fabrics are not only
adopted for the elegance of an interior space; more importantly, they are to reveal details in our
life, that would enhance the quality of the space, characterise it and create certain taste for it.
The importance of interior soft decoration lies in the fact that it endows a space with certain quali-
ties and tastes. If we take hard decorations as skeletons of our body, then soft decorations are the
clothes we wear. As the charm of a person is shown through the clothes he or she wears, a space
stands out with soft decorations revealing its taste. Soft decorations dress interior spaces with
different effects, modest, luxurious, or noble. All styles could be realised by soft decorations.
Furthermore, soft decoration plays a key role in an interior space by making it sense emotional
with a particular spirit. With soft decorations, a cold space becomes warm. No matter for resi-
dences, hotels, or other public spaces, interior design should emphasise the creation of particular
atmospheres, which would pull inhabitants or customers closer to the spaces. We nd soft decora-
tions quite helpful in achieving this goal. Soft decorations make spaces organic and live, instead of
cold and dead. A live space is to communicate with people in it, not to enclose them only.
The application of soft decorations can be various, with which, you can make a space light and
soft, or colourful and fervent. Different people like different atmospheres; thus they require differ-
ent ways of applying soft decorations. Besides, what is important is that soft decorations are quite
exible. You can change them at will.
Interior soft decorations include window curtains, curtains, carpets, tablecloths, cushions, as well
as beds and sofas.Textile is the most commonly used soft decoration. From a visual or tactile per-ception, textiles make us feel soft and warm. Particularly in the modern context where hard and
cold reinforced concrete dominates our spaces, appropriate adoption of textiles could soften the
hardness and warm the coldness. In interior spaces, the amount of textile used has become an
important aspect to measure the quality of interior soft decoration. Furniture is also important in
interior spaces, which has gone beyond its basic functions; more importantly, it is a kind of decora-
tion itself. Nowadays people are becoming increasingly aware of the decorative effect of furniture.
Especially sofas and beds, as the main components in interior spaces, have become an integral
part of soft decoration.
This book covers two categories: Textile and Furniture Fabrics. The latest decoration design con-
cepts are included here with abundant exquisite pictures. The book introduces to its readers the
designs of soft decorations and their inuence in interior design.

As c oncepts like decor ation and cloth art appear,
interior textile decoration is becoming a materialised
culture. Textile conquers space has become a
convincing principle in interior soft decoration. Textile has
some distinctive charm. On the one hand, it shows the
softness of a space; on the other hand, it expresses our
emotions. Textile in an interior space has become the
emotional link between people and the spaces in modern
architecture. Textile helps create certain atmospheres for
spaces. Textile in different forms, colours, and produced
with different crafts would bring to a space different visual
experiences and atmospheres.
Textile exists in interior spaces in various forms, including
window curtains, curtains, carpets, tablecloths, etc. Pieces
of textile could be hung or spread, adopted for a large
area or just for a corner of a table. Whatever way, if used
properly, a piece of textile could positively influence our
visual and psychological perception. Furthermore, textile
in the interior would even be our way of life, or something
special for sentiment. The creation of space atmosphere,
and the psychological impact it brings depend on the
choices of the textile in terms of colour, craft, pattern,
etc. Colour is the most direct way to influence our
perception. According to ones habits, we could choose
different colour palettes, with different colours consistent
with each other or in sharp contrast. Different styles
suit different ways of thinking and living. In interior soft
decoration design, the use of textile could create a unied,
harmonious visual experience. For example, if you tend to
highlight the sense of luxury in a space, you could have
exquisitely-designed patterns on the textile. Pattern is
also a key element in interior textile decoration. Various
patterns combined with different ways of decoration would
create the space atmosphere we desire.

Window curtains are most frequently used for interior decoration. In interior spaces, window curtains not only function
as sun-shading, dustproof, sound-proof tools, etc., they also serve as a kind of decoration. To some extent, window
curtains decide the expression of a room, and reect the owner's life style and taste.
The decorative function of window curtains is realised through the choice of colours, patterns, texture, and decorative
styles. Colour is the most direct way to create certain effects. Different colours have different connotations with them,
and thus would have different impacts on people. Pattern is an effective way of connecting window curtains to our
minds. Simple or exquisite, different patterns suit different needs of mind. The choice of texture of window curtains
could also inuence our perception. Gauze curtains would feel soft, while heavy cloth curtains would feel warm anddignied.

Minimalist window curtains could add a modern sense to a space. Here, without any traditional decorationelement, the colour and the fabric of the window curtain are highlighted. The space is lled with an apparentsense of simplicity and purity.
In this interior design, the colour palette is harmonious and coherent, with the colour of the window curtain inaccordance with that of the furniture and the fabric. The ambience of the space is hence created.

The colour palette of a window curtain plays an important role in the creation ofthe ambience of a space. Usually in interior decoration design, the colour of thewindow curtain should go with the colour palette of the space, in order not to causeany jump in the tone. Consistent in the colour palette, the window curtain wouldnaturally become an integral part in the interior design.

In practice, when designing a window curtain, the size and the type of thewindow (whether it is a French window) should be taken into consideration.Large oor-to-ceiling windows would match heavy and giant curtains.
When window curtains are withdrawn, spaces would become bright andopen; when they are closed, the interior spaces would be isolated from the
outside, offering a sense of privacy.

In order to achieve an elegant ambience in the space, the window curtains in this project areparticularly designed with hollowed-out patterns, making the curtains more delicate and offeringthe space more permeability. A flimsy sheer curtain is adopted here, bringing out a sense ofobscurity and elegance.

Curtains are a kind of very practical textile in interior decoration. They divide big spaces into pleasant small ones; they
demarcate as well as highlight certain sub-spaces. Apart from dividing spaces, curtains could enhance the privacy of
a space. Therefore, in a space enclosed by curtains, people would feel closer and safer. Consequently, it would be
easier to establish certain atmosphere and sentiment for the space.
As soft decoration is attracting more and more attention, the decorative function of curtains is increasingly highlighted.
On the one hand, curtains with their own textures, patterns and colours, as carefully designed, could be visually
pleasant themselves; in this sense, they are pieces of decoration naturally hanging there. On the other hand, curtains
are decorative for their function of covering, for the elegance of a space. Curtains could be used to cover some
unsatisfactory corners or to conceal something not very pleasing for the eye. Thats a more important aspect for thedecorative function of curtains.
Usually there are two kinds of curtains in the interior. One is the curtain hung around a bed, which is separated from
the rest of the space when the curtain is closed; inside there would be a closed, private space. When the curtain is
pulled, it becomes a kind of decoration for the bed, revealing a sense of intimacy and romance. The other is used as
soft partition to demarcate certain spaces. A comparatively big space could be divided into two or more parts. In this
way, we could make use of space more effectively without breaking the elegance of it.

Carpets in interior spaces could offer a bit of warmth, especially when you are tired, and could give the simple oor
under your feet a surprise. As people become more and more interested in the personalisation of life styles, carpets,
as an integral part of fashion furnishings, are becoming a key element in interior textile decoration.
Carpets in the interior are both functional and decorative. The functionality of carpets refers to the comfort it brings to
a room. Compared with cold tiles, soft and textured carpets could offer a warm experience. With the improvement of
our living conditions, such basic function of carpets is gradually fading, while the decorative function is more and more
highlighted. In interior decoration design, a piece of carpet would be decorative in two aspects: pattern and colour.
Pattern is the language of carpets in the interior in that it is through patterns that the carpet communicates with
and integrates into the interior, for the creation of a certain atmosphere in the space. On the carpet, there could becomplicated contents of drawing, or, there could be simple gures only. In either way, a certain atmosphere in the
space would be created. Likewise, the choice of colour could enhance the decorative function of carpets. Simple,
elegant, or fervent, different colours would bring us different visual and psychological experiences. This is especially
true with a coloured oor; it would make the space feel more decorated.
Besides, different textures would achieve different effects. Velvet, silk, linen, cotton, wool, etc., different textures not
only differ in visual effects, but also help create different atmospheres.
Fabric Styles 056
Carpets would not only impress people as being warm and soft, but also, with decoration elements such as colour and pattern, create visual andpsychological effects. Therefore, carpets are indispensible in interior softdecoration.
In this project, the carpet spreads on such a large area and thus plays theleading role in the soft decoration. In terms of colour, the carpet goes wellwith the colour palette of the space. Brown is used to produce a soothingand calm atmosphere.

Cushions are a kind of decorative textile that has been conceived comparatively more practical. In interior spaces,
cushions appropriately designed could serve their basic functions; more importantly, they could be perceived as
strongly decorative and thus reveal the owner's taste and help create an intimate and elegant atmosphere.
Cushions
-
7/30/2019 Fabric Styles (Gnv64)
46/122
Cushions are practical because they are very useful on sofas and beds to make us feel soft and comfortable. With
cushions, we sit or lie more comfortably to ease fatigue effectively. Besides, it is easy to use cushions in various
places due to their exibility.
Compared with practicality, the decorative function of cushions is getting more and more important for us. Cushions
are decorative also for the two aspects mentioned above: pattern and colour. Different types of patterns on cushions
would offer different visual effects. For example, cushions with dark patterns would give a noble sense, which is
suitable for luxurious interiors. Cushions with brightly-coloured patterns would be appropriate for spaces with amodern style. Warm-colour patterns suit elderly people, while cold-colour patterns are preferred by the young and
cartoon patterns by children. The use of colours on cushions could accommodate different atmospheres. For example,
when the colour palette in a space seems monotonous, we could use bright-colour cushions to liven it up. On the
contrary, when there are already diverse colours in a space, light-colour cushions are preferred to temper the colour
palette in order to reach a balance.

Tablecloths are usually used on tables for cleanness and elegance of the space. In the interior, a tablecloth is
both practical and decorative. Its practicality lies in its basic and natural function to keep a table clean and
tidy. Meanwhile, its mild texture would make us feel soft and warm. In restaurants, particularly, tablecloths are
indispensible. They would soften the atmosphere of the space, and reduce the possibility of abrasion between the
dinnerware and the table.
In living spaces, tablecloths are more decorative than practical. Thus in interior design, designers are attaching more

the overall atmosphere of the given space and accordinglychoose appropriate furniture, bearing in mind the style, form and
colour you desire for the ultimate best decorative effect.
Furniture could express our attitudes towards life. In this sense,
it is a symbol of life in interior spaces. A piece of furniture itself
doesnt possess any sentiment. However, when used in a space
and linked to human being, it becomes a tool of expressing
sentiments. In an interior space, furniture should be designed not
only to meet our basic needs in daily life, but more importantly to
embody the overall ambiences, and even to reveal the owners
taste, interests, education background, and even his profession.
Two factors should be considered for furniture design. Firstly,
the overall atmosphere and layout of the space. Spaces with
different conditions would require different choices of furniture.
Secondly, the creation of decorative effects of furniture. Proper
furniture decorations could form a strong sense of spatial
rhythm. The special language of decoration could express
certain tastes and sentiments.
Furniture is decorative in interior spaces in two aspects: colourand texture. Furniture in different colours brings different visual
and psychological experiences. For instance, tint-colour furniture
would feel light and soft, natural colours intimate and elegant,
and cold colours fashionable and modern. We should choose
the colours of furniture according to the colour palette of a given
space. The colours should be consistent and harmonious. The
texture of furniture is another key factor that affects its decorative
effect. Wooden, metallic, glass, textile, etc., different kinds
of texture would bring out different styles and ambiences for
spaces. Of course, you could choose according to your personal
preferences.
Among all kinds of furniture that serve their decorative functions
in interior spaces, sofas and beds are the most representative.
Sofas and beds are the dominating part of furniture in terms of
decoration. They are the main bodies in interior spaces. Any
interior decoration design starts with the design of sofas and
beds.
Fabric Styles 136
Sofas are the most important and most frequently-seen pieces of furniture in interior spaces. Beds are usually
conned to bedrooms, while sofas can be placed in any space except toilets. Sofas could be the main part of furniture
in sitting rooms, and could also be in bedrooms as something complementary. Sofas appear in homes as well as in
ofces. In fact, in any place where human being would have any kind of activity, there could be sofas. Among all kinds
of furniture, sofa is the one that provides us with a comfortable rest and the one we touch most.
The practicality and decorative effect of sofas can be combined perfectly. As the tempo of life becomes more and
more fast, we are facing increasing pressures from all aspects. Consequently, what we ask from sofas is not only the
comfort they bring, but more importantly their decorative effects, which are created in terms of two aspects: texture
and colour. Sofas with different kinds of texture could effectively create different decorative effects. Fabric sofas,
leather sofas, etc. would bring different visual and tactile experience. As for colour, we define it as an important
aesthetic element Colours could reveal senses of weight time density etc thus creating different effects

deliberately designed to be elegant. Grey is adopted to express the mood
of reminiscence, while the sofas keep a low prole, as if softly telling visitors
the traces of the past.

The sofas in the picture above, with simple shapes, a simple colour, and
a simple material, seem too ordinary. However, thats just life, isnt it? The
ordinary sofas correspond with the nature of our ordinary life. Theres
something more the colourful cushions to modify the mood. The wisdom
revealed here is that an ordinary life can become interesting with some
proper modiers.

The sense of luxury is the most important in the decoration design of
this project, most apparently revealed from the sofas. The faint colour, combined with the old-fashioned pattern, brings out a cultural and historicalair, reminiscent of the middle ages.

Sofas in bedrooms could help create cozy spaces, relaxing for both body
and mind. Designers usually attach more importance to their decorative
effects. As shown in the picture, the images of red ower on the sofa, as a
decoration element, contribute to a fervent atmosphere of the space.

Bedrooms can be in cold tones. In the picture, the blue sofa dominates the
decoration of the space, effectively creating a calm, cool atmosphere.

Soft decoration is a highlight in this interior space. The colour palette and
the patterns are purposefully adopted. The light blue is used to emphasisethe purity of the atmosphere. Meanwhile, a comfortable sofa is placed at theend of the bed, which is thus no longer the sole leading piece of furniture inthe bedroom. Besides, more opportunities are offered for entertainments.

Usually sofas in bedrooms would be placed with their backs facing the
beds, in order to create two independent areas. However, have you everthought of the opposite way? What if we place a sofa facing the bed? In thepicture below you would nd the answer.
Here is the decoration design for a childrens bedroom. The pink small
sofas are just suitable for the nature of children, making the room feel lively. They go well with the colour palette of the entire space, producing a warmand fragrant ambience.

The bed is the most important furniture in a bedroom, and also the closest to us. We spend a rather big part of our life
in bed. Moreover, we conceive it as a harbour for our soul. We have been attaching great importance to the design
of bed in the interior. In ancient China, for example, beds could be extremely exquisite; there would be delicate
engravings and curtains around, making it seem like a little pretty house. In the classical interior design in Europe,
beds are also emphasised. Similar to the ancient Chinese design, designers devoted to European classical style also
pursue neness, revealed not only in the choice of texture and colour, but also in details. With the rise of modernist
decoration, we become longing for a rather simple and modern decoration effect. This could be felt in the design of
beds, where elements such as colour, line and lighting are enormously employed to inuence interior ambiences.

with a modern style are adopted more often than not. As for the colourpalette, comparatively bright tones would be preferred.

In soft decoration designs for bedrooms, beds are not decorative for their
own sake; rather, they contribute effectively to the improvement of the taste
of the whole bedroom.

Colour is the eternal theme in interior design. For beds, the applicationof colours would usually produce surprising effects. In this space, the red
bedspread, headboard and wall paper make the room extremely fervent.
Here the pink bedspread is adopted as the decorative element for the bed,and a romantic mood is easily achieved. Pink is reminiscent of the maid,
enchanting and intangible.
