This morning, four

presiding officers pre-sented a devotional re-

minding delegates of the importance of social re-sponsibility. The concept

of this presentation comes from the Confer-ence on National Affairs where there is a devo-

tional for each of the

four YMCA core values (Honesty, Responsibility,

Caring, and Respect). This morning’s devo-

tional related to the value of responsibility and focused primarily on

being a responsible and involved citizen.

The devo t i o na l

DII Candidates Run Unopposed, What’s Next?

With the new pro-gram year upon us, it is that time when new candidates run for the positions in office. For the honorable posi-tion of Governor, Pierce Gillette expressed how much she loves YIG, and told us some of her ideas for outreaching to the communities that may not have heard of the amazing program that is YIG. Being a P.O. she was able to

observe the process to

where she is sure she can do the job well, and is very enthusi-astic about running for Governor. H a n n a h Giddings is running for the position of Commissioner of Agriculture. G i d d i n g s wants to help others feel more comfortable in the program, and under-

stand and perform the

process more efficiently. The position of Chief

is being pursued by Caroline Jamieson. Caroline has such an

appreciation for YIG and what it

has done for her. As CFO,

Jamieson wants to help YIG grow throughout our Sunshine State.

A job is done best if the person

performing the job is passionate about what he or she is doing.

Alec Polansky has a passion for

the Constitution. Polansky is run-ning for the position of Attorney

General.

For the position of William

Speaker of the House, Garrett Fer-guson was nominated. Garrett is a natural leader and truly wants to help those that are new and over-whelmed by YIG. Christina Wiley is running for Sullivan Speaker of the House. Christina has been part of almost

every branch of YIG, and has even participated in CONA. She truly loves YIG and wants to help give back to the program that gave her so much.

Good luck to all the candi-dates!

Valentines for Veterans

At most YIG events, there is some kind of service project. Be it cleaning up a venue, helping with a construction project, running a voter registration drive, or oth-erwise, delegates are always actively in-volved in serving others in some capacity. At this year’s Fall District Conferences, delegates are making valentines as a part of the Valentines for Veterans program. Veterans will receive the valentines cards on Valentine’s Day, when many of them may not receive a gift otherwise.

Delegates can use this project as an op-portunity to thank the men and women who have served our country in the mili-tary. Be sure to take a few minutes of your

free time to make a valentine and thank a veteran.

democracy,” which relates to dele-gates’ responsibility to be active in their communities. Youth In Gov-ernment is a service-based pro-gram and while delegates attend service rallies and participate in youth engagement projects, it is important that they also find ways to be involved in their communities outside of these capacities. By vol-

unteering at a local homeless shel-ter, humane society, or other com-munity organization, one can make

changes in the community and truly give back. As delegates con-tinue through the program year

and onto State Assembly, it is of utmost importance that

they remember their obligation to

be an active citizen and to

be socially

responsible.
